In 1747 John Wesley published his ‘Primitive Physic’, a book featuring cures for every day ailments that were made from plants or easily available ingredients. This year we planted a new Physic Garden Trail that featured plants from the book. Join us to celebrate and learn more about this fascinating aspect of John Wesley’s life.
On the day you will be able to see the new Physic Garden Trail and the House will be open for you to meet its Georgian residents. There will also be garden related activities for all ages to enjoy.

Love this misty photo of the graveyard at the back of the Chapel from the 1880s. The offices which today 'overhang' the part of our garden nearest Tabernacle Street were built in the early 1980s #ThrowbackThursday

In the Museum we display bibles in many different languages from all around the world. For our next post on the hymn books and bibles currently in store here we're featuring this Latin copy of the New Testament that belonged to a gentleman named J Clark Gibson, we'd love to know more about him!

This week is #BritishScienceWeek! John Wesley was fascinated with electricity. He attended demonstrations of electrical machines and procured his own equipment in 1756. He used the electrical machine we have on display for medicinal purposes - patients were given treatment for free at various dispensaries in London, including at the Foundery Chapel. #BSW19

Lower 6th Form Students from The Leys School, Cambridge have created artworks inspired by the House, Chapel & Wesley's life. They have been installed throughout the site and can be seen during regular opening hours. Well worth a visit!

To celebrate International Women’s Day we remember Mary Bosanquet Fletcher. Born to a wealthy Huguenot family, she went against her family’s wishes and became a Methodist. She was an early female preacher in the Methodist movement, and wrote to John Wesley in 1771 to argue the case for formally accepting female preachers. By this point Wesley welcomed female preachers and recognised the important role they were playing in the growth of Methodism, however, his response to Bosanquet’s letter is seen as the first written approval given by him. Mary Bosanquet Fletcher went against societal expectations of the time to follow what she truly believed in.

On this day in 1777 John Wesley wrote in his journal 'Being a warm sunshiny day, I preached in Moorfields, in the evening. There were thousands upon thousands; and all were still as night. Not only violence & rioting, but even scoffing at field preachers is now over'.

Two now & then comparisons for #ThrowbackThursday. The image showing Wesley's statue looking out is dated Spring 1959, the other showing a group visit arriving, we think is from the 1960s.

It's time for the second book from our collections focus on bibles and hymn books. This large volume of John Wesley’s explanatory notes on the Old Testament is 11cm deep and 24cm wide, making it one of the largest books in our collection. This copy was published in 1765 as an addition to Wesley’s notes on the New Testament published 10 years earlier. The notes would have been used to explain different elements of the New Testament to ordinary people.

Very interesting historical artefacts relating to a great period of Christian history

Um lugar especial!

Foi sensacional conhecer pouco da trajetória de John Wesley; ver o ambiente em que ele viveu e ver como este homem era empenhado em ter comunhão com Deus.

Impactada!

This is a place to feel the presence of God.

We have to recognize the legacy John Wesley left for us all.

The tour of John Wesley's house is a must. It really takes you back in time and you get to see many items that belonged to him. We thoroughly enjoyed the informative tour and then we were invited to attend a service. Since we are from America, we were delighted to attend and observe the similarities in worship. We took the city bus from our hotel at Blackfriar's and it was an easy ride.

User

The lovely tour guide was very knowledgeable and happy to answer all our questions. It's a fascinating place and the architecture and Victorian loos are wonderful.

User

The Recital that we stumbled into and sitting in the Chapel, Enriched me.

User

Made to feel most welcome. Beautiful stained glass windows and lovely organ music. An oasis in the city.

User

It's always interesting, but some days the guides dress in period costume - check out Mr Wesley's wig! - and give out period.snacks. Be sure to visit the Victorian toilets.

User

Great little historical museum of Wesley and Methodism generally. A very knowledgeable man gave us a tour of Wesley's house and answered questions. Many original items belonging to Wesley and others were to be seen. It is all free, but they do accept donations. Across the street is the Dissenters Cemetery where Susanna Wesley, John Bunyan, and John Owen are buried.

User

Excellent guide. A lovely warm church community.

User

Both the Museum and Wesley's House are fantastic places to visit and tell a lot about London's history. The Chapel itself is a lovely place for quiet contemplation.

User

Absolutely loved it!! Fantastic chapel, full of historic interest and spiritual greatness!!

Would recommend it to anyone!!

God Bless you!!😊

User

A really thoughtfully put together museum

User

A beautiful little known museum, except maybe for the methodists who come as a pilgrimage. The lady who took us through our visit was ever so knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Thanks to her we know a little more about Methodism and John Wesley. The visit of the male toilets was interesting too

User

Gostei muito de conhecer um lugar tão interessante. Como vir em Londres Inglaterra e não visita.

User

Fascinating. Guided tour of the men's toilet! The oldest in London.

User

Well presented and somewhat interesting if you're into this kind of thing.
