This has to be my favourite place to go to. It's my first time in London and I've already been here thrice! I love that it has commercial downstairs and indie upstairs. it's nice to have that option.

User

I really liked there. A good place to do birthday parties and drink(pub). Next time that I visit London, I will go back.

User

Great place. #ShanghaiBlues ..Wow! Guys, ye smashed it tonight!! Ye were just fabulous...superb music. Thank you for a wonderful evening ..can't wait for next weekend!

User

Great intimate venue above the pub with a capacity of only 140.

Really friendly bar staff

User

Favourite pub in London. Music, beer and nice people. Hope I could come back soon.

User

A nicer more friendly bunch of people I have yet to meet in East London.

An amazing pub with the best DJ's, one of whom was actually playing vinyl. As a vinyl DJ, that got my vote straight away. I already have plans to return and it's a pretty long way from Bath to The Old Blue for a gig...awesome. Thank you to all i had the pleasure of meeting...very friendly bar staff too.

User

Old school gig hub, cosy upstairs stage and bar. Brilliant spring board for up and comers wanting to strum, strut and belt out their beats. If your looking to leaving a venue little sweaty and feeling like you've been somewhere in the thick of somewhere that's somewhere London then try it out.

User

Such an improvement over the last 5 years. Nice staff, good beer, great gigs. Charging £3 for a pint of soda water is disgraceful though...

User

It's a cool pub but I think some of the staff are very typical attitude of east London think they are too cool to do good customer service . Some them very rude and not helpful there was only one lady who was lovely when serving me and she had cool orange bob hair . And very friendly . So please give some of your staff customer service training .

User

It was ok, a friends pint was off.

i had a new guy serving me so that is what it is.

Music was a bit loud for a monday evening and empty lucky we got seats next to the photo booth and the speaker was off but price is normal its not a jj moons its a gig pub

User

I like the vibe and the music is good but the drinks are pretty pricey which puts me off making it a regular go to venue.

User

Visited for the first time on Thursday 18th Jan. Really liked the look of the place, beer and atmosphere were great...went on to Village Underground for a gig and we naturally returned afterwards as we were so impressed.

Unfortunately, whilst a gentleman (who happened to be homeless) was talking to me (yes, he had asked for change but he was very polite and wasn't troubling anyone) he got "shoo-ed" away by the door-man, as if he were a filthy animal. Made me sick, that man is a human being...offer him a hot drink, not a cold shoulder!

Just wondered if it's your policy to degrade people on the streets? Or was it your door-man's own warped view on what's acceptable?

User

Unfortunately my friend and I have been subjects of racial profiling from the clubs bodyguards... and are awaiting the club’s explanation of the reason for our restriction.... we were told that people had to have tickets which was not exclaimed to others, why were we singled out? Please explain

User

Too too posh place for people who just want listen to music and have some drinks. Fly down The Old Blue Last!!!

User

Sort your bar staff out waited far too long to get served, watched people get served around me who came after me and eventually left. You lost two people's beer money for the evening and foreseeable future because your staff couldn't be bothered to keep track of who was next.

User

So...Pub and decor are great, prices are as you would expect. Staff and security were generally fairly sound (indeed, the security were very friendly later in the evening).

We arrived before 6pm for a "first come first served" gig (PUP). We asked security and at the bar if we should wait anywhere, or if we should watch for some cue to move to the (upstairs) gig area. We were told it would be fine - capacity 140, less than 50 people there, no queue outside etc.

We chilled, drank, laughed, made new friends and all that bollocks. At around 7pm, as it was getting busier, we asked again if we should queue or similar; we were told not to worry, although soon afterwards a queue of around 30 people formed at the entrance to the stairs.

We joined the queue, optimistic that we would be fine to get upstairs. We waited an hour (taking turns to hit the bar, about £60 spent by now). The queue barely moved (we assumed as the gig wasn't open yet).

We waited another hour, during which time the queue had crept forwards and we were in the front six people or so. Obviously "special" people were allowed to queue jump by the young lady who, we assumed, was managing the event. Whatever.

Another hour and we hadn't moved. Lots of people had given up, but fuck I had come up to London specifically for this gig. And, you know, I expected it to be run by real, grown up people.

When further time had passed and we asked security what was going on we were told we wouldn't be getting in. Given that nothing had moved in an hour we were non-plussed. Why not say that earlier? We had been told one in / one out, but unfortunately this seemed primarily to consist of staff or friends of staff (although that might be an incorrect assumption; maybe it was just lucky randoms who the lady fancied or something).

When we discussed it further and were told that, essentially, we would never have been getting in, I got reasonably pissed off. I opted to leave through the side exit (which we then learnt had been used throughout to let people in at the discretion of the aforementioned lady).

I continued speaking with security (I must say, they remained friendly and polite throughout, even though I was pretty pissed off by then; I can only assume they are used to dealing with cunts). I explained that it was pretty ridiculous to let people queue when there was no chance of them accessing the venue.

The security guard managing the in / out advised that the venue (as mentioned) was a 140 capacity and he then showed me the clicker (which read 209). I asked if he felt that was legal or safe and I was told to call the police if I wanted to. The "lady" got pretty bitchy (again, I was pissed off but I was not particularly rude) and said we should have queued earlier if we wanted to get in. In hindsight, I wish I had told her to go fuck herself.

As at the start of this review, the venue and staff generally seemed decent. But running a gig (regardless of how "punk" or cool the venue wants to be) in this way is just shit. Not to mention the apparent contravention of fire / health and safety regulations.

Wouldn't go back if they fucking paid me*.

*Well, I probably would. But only if they paid me a lot.

User

One in one out policy was a joke!!.. couldn't step outside for fresh air without having to queue up for entry again.. which could take 20 mins +... never seen anything like it!

Beer was also overpriced for the amount of water in it..

Finally one one the door staff was so aggressive I'm surprised he didn't burst a vessel!

Hated the night.. saw the bad I wanted to who were great but the organisation of it all was laughable

User

I think the bar staff need to go on a customer care course. My father in law had a problem with his ale on Saturday and asked for it to be changed, after telling the barman on three occasions what the problem was he was told just to drink it and basically go away. After my father in law kicked up a stink his drink was changed and we continued drinking until the bar manager (sam) approached us 15m after and told him he had to finish his drink and leave. On talking to the manager outside with the doorman she said he had been racist and aggressive (which he 100% wasn't ) and that's why he was asked to leave. Would never go back to this run down dirty place even if you paid me :(((

User

Eurgh full of STUPID and STINKY men! Always shouting and rude! (¿Why won't they shush?)
