About The Old Harkers Arms

This is a proper old city of London boozer, only in Chester, that has a really good reputation for its food - it’s a great meeting place over a pub lunch, and at different times you’ll find half the commercial and professional heart of the city in there. It’s a very social place with a lovely clubby atmosphere, and you’re pretty much bound to meet someone interesting.

82 lamp posts sniffed ✔️ 1 squirrel chased ✔️ All in all a successful walk this morning!!
We lost a few numbers due to the rain but the dogs definitely enjoyed it!! And we still managed to raise a nice little sum for our animal friends at North Clwyd Animal Rescue 🐶🐱

Two weeks ago we took part in the 43rd Annual Charity Raft Race!! We didn't quite win the race however we managed to win the prize for 'Most Innovatie Raft' 🏆
We all had a great day and managed to raise over £1000 for the chosen charity!!
A huge thank you to absolutely everyone that helped out, from our expert team that designed and created our raft to our local butchers and breweries that donated supplies for our bar 'Harkers on the Meadow' and everybody else that pitched in to help us set up and get that raft down the river in one piece!!

•Ai Galera Mistico & Poetico• These beautiful wines are full of flavour and character, made from a blend of indigenous grape varieties from the long overlooked region of Tejo, Portugal

User

just happened soon this pub/bar/ restaurant by chance and i can absolutely recommend this as a place to visit in chester i loved it the different wines you can have are extreamly extensive and the staff are very informative

User

The food here was fabulous I had lamb and my husband had the sausage, it was lovely will visit again next time we are in Chester, thank you.

User

Planned a business meet here this week and I knew I can rely on the service & food 100%

Another great night at Harkers!

User

Lovely pub with good food not sampled it yet but seen lots coming out ! Cask ales and lovely setting by the canal also your dog/s are very welcome too love it here

User

Lovely place with friendly, helpful staff. Food was delicious and reasonably priced. If I had to raise a negative, it’d be that they don’t serve Strongbow. The Pinot Grigio made up for that though! Definitely recommend a visit.

User

Lovely meal yesterday at old Harper's had steak pie mash and veg were delicious for desert had pecan pie was lovely as was the raspberry gin to highly recommend will go again soon thankyou

User

In Chester for the races. Stopped here with 11 friends on the way for refreshments! Very busy but service was excellent. Decided to have lunch and we're served really quickly. Most of us had the fish finger sandwich which was delightful x

User

I love this little place. Very friendly and food was looking lovely.

I planted a stone for someone to find.

User

Great to be in an adult only environment. The food is absolutely wonderful, and they also allow dogs which is the only reason we stopped here. There are many whiskies to choose from and we've had a great time on two visits now. Toilet nice and clean too. Always busy because it's so nice and staff were very good.

User

Came to Chester with my husband and 2 dogs and ate here twice. The food was delicious and cannot fault the service. The dogs were made to feel more than welcome too with bowls of water and dog biscuits. Would highly recommend here and hopefully be back again soon. Thank you xx

User

Came across this pub by accident, they accommodated us, great atmosphere great food and service would recommend you find this place

User

Called in for my birthday lunch with my wife, we both ordered the lamb and it was excellent, the beer was very good as well, made the shopping around town afterwards enjoyable 😂 We even called back in for a couple more pints before catching the train back home, will definitely call in again.

User

Working in the area and had been for a drink here on several occasions before, decided to eat here this time but due to it been busy I could only find a space to eat by sitting at the bar, the food and choice of beer was excellent and by sitting by the bar I was in the perfect position to observe the excellent service provided by the hard working staff, I definitely recommend it to everyone and will be returning when in town

User

I am absolutely disgusted with your attitude to having a good time. Last night 8 of us decided to go for a drink and hopefully food and because we were laughing to each other apparently too loud we were asked to leave the building. I wouldn’t of minded if it was real quite in there but it was rather busy and a lot of noise.

User

Food was very good , but service was rubbish totally ruined our night , spent 10 minutes waiting for our table after pre booking , then after dinner ask for a pudding menu which took another 10 minutes , waited for 40 minutes until she came back and ask if we wanted anything , one girl doing all the tables , bad staff management , would not recommend going if you are hungry or for a one year anniversary like us , had a better night and better service at another bar down the road

User

Wow I’ve never been to an establishment like this, wish I’d read some reviews first. Standing at the bar and staff are to busy bitching about the outfits the ladies were wearing to the races. Then asked a group to leave because they were laughing to loud!! Sort your self out your place and staff are nothing special

User

Second time I have been to this venue and the "fun" prevention police were in full force. Rumour has it the manager was thrown out of the Gestapo for cruelty. Beware if you are travelling to Chester for a good time probably best to avoid this place.

User

Quite shocking that children/families are not welcome. Big sign on the door that says so too! I completely understand that some people like to go for a drink in an adult only environment in the evening but on a Sunday lunch time? I think that’s awful from somewhere that serves food.

User

I went a few weeks ago for the first time in years (due to poor customer service and the attitude of staff members) to give this place another go as I am often asked for recommendations to dog friendly establishments. I took my mum for a Friday afternoon meal, I asked if I could use my e-cig and was told I could as long as it was subtle. We had a meal which we thoroughly enjoyed, my mum asked for a wine recommendation and was very happy with it, all in all we had a very pleasant afternoon and our dogs were also made welcome. Following this visit I added a photo, information and a link to the Old Harkers website on my website.

This Friday 20th April my step dad asked if we could take him there for his birthday lunch so we went. We sat near the kitchen as a number of the tables in the main room were reserved. As we were sitting chatting a woman with short dark hair and brown eyes came over to the table and very condescendingly waved her hand in the air and said something like "whats that, smoke"? (I thought that perhaps the vapour from using my e-cig was evident because of the bright sunlight so I pointed to it). She then eyeballed me in an extremely aggressive manner and told me that e-cigs are not allowed. I explained that I had asked on a previous visit and she spoke down to me like I was a child whilst still aggressively staring into my eyes saying something along the lines of "no, they're not allowed, especially near the kitchen" She obviously intended to demean and embarrass me in front of my family members; however I have had many years of experience of people displaying obnoxious behaviours and am not intimidated by bullies who lead me to believe that they have a lack of character, intelligence or integrity.

My parents did feel uncomfortable though so I didn't complain when my food arrived and the potatoes and carrots were cold as I didn't know what sort of confrontation would ensue given the previous encounter with this woman. We paid our £77 bill, (not cheap is it?). I left a tip for the nice girl who took our money even though my parents said something about them taking money with menaces and vowed to never return.

I have some of the other reviews and notice that poor ones do not get a reply from management, I see this as a reflection of their lack of customer care, despite what it says on their quirky website! Either they can't be bothered to read reviews or they don't care about customer perception or that one of their employees could be losing them money with their vile attitude.

I will not be returning to the Old Harkers Arms

I will be removing my recommendation from my website.

I will be putting my opinion on every review site I can

I will be telling everyone I know what happened

I will no longer recommend the place due to our aggressive encounter

If you have read this review and still decide to go, consider yourself warned that you will probably be treated like a second class citizen whilst you pay dearly for your poor treatment!
