About The Photography Movement

The photography movement has been founded to help all of humanity to express their emotions around mental health and provoke conversation through the medium of photography. Founded by best friends Scott Shillum and Steve Wallington.

The Photography Movement Description

Welcome to The Calm Photography Movement, a project that has been founded to help men express their emotions and provoke conversation through the medium of photography whilst raising awareness and funds for CALM, an award winning charity dedicated to preventing male suicide - the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK.

Both an exhibition and competition are being held to support the project on the 10th - 19th May 2017 at the prestigious Getty Images Gallery in London.

We are looking for images which express your feelings on what it is to be a modern man in todayŌĆÖs fast changing world that shine a light on the limitations of traditional masculinity and empower us to think differently about the individual inside.

We were honoured that Allie Crewe was part of the Photography Movement exhibition and has continued to inspire us since with her powerful portraits and moving stories.
Her up and coming exhibition "You Brought Your Own Light' is sponsored by Sparkle (the National transgender charity) and will be a nine-week exhibition at Manchester Central Library. It is a celebration of Allie's groundbreaking and evocative work with transgender subjects.
Her work has been described as "Hig...hly rated, sincere, poignant and classical..." by Magnum, and as "...a terrific body of work filled with heart and empathy" by LensCulture, her work was shortlisted for the prestigious Portrait of Britain award in 2017.
Her insistence that her work should remain authentic, creative and kind, in order to capture the truth about her subjects, was the inspiration for the title of her exhibition.
'You Brought Your Own Light' opens with an invitation only event from 6-8pm on July 26th, and will be free to the public from July 27th until September 29th.
If you're in the area, be sure to visit this important exhibition filled with empathy and creativity. Thank you Allie for your work!

Must read interview by Daniel Regan Photography with young photographer, Daniel Smith.
Fade Out is a project to raise awareness on male suicide and depression. Daniel writes on his intentions behind the series of images and in the interview writes:
"I hope it raises awareness about the scale and impact of male suicide. If the same amount of men died every year from another cause, we would be talking about it and try and find solutions so why not suicide?"
... An inspiring soul and photographer! Follow him on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/splitfocus/ to see more images.

We are delighted that we can help support MEN UP NORTH and their event this June 30th.
Their intention is to help men to open up and create a support network of like-minded people. Since Oct 2017 they have held regular MEN UP NORTH: CAN WE TALK sessions of which most have been sold out.
They cover topics that aim to empower men, to encourage self-awareness and to create a space of shared stories so men don't have to feel they are alone when suffering.
... We love their passion so we are delighted to help by sending some images from our Calm Photography Movement Exhibition last year to the event this Saturday.
Find out more via the link and if you're in the Sheffield area, do join them!

We enjoy taking The Photography Movement to spaces of education and recently we went to the London College of Communication to chat to some photography students together with Antonia Atwood and Daniel Regan.
We can see that the subject of mental health is always a much needed one. Many people resonate and we wanted to see if the movement would work well for future students.
The results we received from the group's efforts were all positive and inspiring.
... Let us know if you would want TPM at your spaces of education or if you feel photography workshops are a great source of self-expression especially when it comes to our mental well-being. We feel the impact we have on people is always positive when we discuss TPM and our stories are needed if we want to help break the taboo around mental health.
Have a great evening!

Last night's opening of 'I Want to Live' by Daniel Regan Photography was both inspiring and emotional.
The Maytree suicide respite centre is one of a kind and these images are supporting both the charity whilst raising awareness around suicide, the centre itself and the need to break the stigma around suicide.

We will be joining Daniel for his launch of the 'I Want to Live' exhibition on Thursday, a photographic project exploring mental health and suicide.
The exhibition is inspired by the Maytree, an amazing suicide respite centre based in London. Maytree is run with the purpose of providing non-clinical support to those experiencing suicidal thoughts or feelings whilst helping people to re-engage with life and to restore hope.
The project involves Daniel's interviews with the v...olunteers behind Maytee including photographic portraits. He wanted to investigate what brings people to volunteer - what are their own personal stories with mental health.
'I Want to Live' will be exhibiting for 4 months at the Free Space Project, an arts and health charity and gallery based in London. Please support the project by going to visit the show or purchasing the photo-book where 100% of proceeds will be split between the Free Space Project and Maytree.
Daniel has been an incredible support when we do our talks around London and we really look forward to seeing this exhibition.

"Photography has become the spoken word. There is going to be three cameras to every person in the next 5 years. This is not all about the dark side - this is about showing the ups and downs, the celebrations but also showing the periods of the 'dark-side' that people go through as well." - Steve speaking and sharing about the Photography Movement as a guest during the Photography x Mental Health exhibition recently held in Amsterdam.

Photographer: Sophie Ebrard Title: NHS Dementia campaign (UK) Exhibition: Photography x Mental Health with A City Made by People, Amsterdam
****
... This image was shot for a public health campaign on dementia for the NHS in the UK.
A crucial aspect regarding this commission was to maintain sensitivity towards the emotive nature of the subject. Using natural light and keeping the team small (photographer and assistant) were vital to creating the documentary style the series called for.
On the day of the shoot, it was about trying to get the right range of emotion, and not portraying sadness or concern. The light, texture and muted colours that shooting on film have produced gives it believability (although shot with actors) making it relatable, natural, and creating a very intimate portrait. *** This image won Best in Book in the Creative review photo annual in 2013
