Tried leaving a review on google but my browser is blocking attempts. I haven't tried the food yet but recently I have been in for a beer or two because I have been passing through. I work in the pub trade and know good beer when I get it. Have to say the St Austall Proper Job is the best beer I have tasted in a while. I've been in just for the Proper Job. I am a real ale enthusiast and try as many beers as possible. It was perfectly served, correct temperature etc.. And what a fabulous pub!. I haven't relaxed in such comfortable chairs for a long time and the outdoor seating was great too when I needed a smoke. I was In this evening of Sunday July 1st and your young barman who was on is a diamond. I am coming for the beer festival with a group and I think we will be eating too, so I will then get a chance to find out how the food tastes. I'm looking forward to that. The cleanliness, comfort, service and good beer for me puts your pub at the top of my favourites list.

User

The Red Lion, Welwyn is one of our two 'go to' local pub restaurants, both chosen because we like their atmosphere, food, staff - the whole experience.

Yesterday we booked a table for two for the Boxing Day menu. We were met with a smile and shown straight to our table. Our food was good, each course arriving promptly and hot. There were a couple of large groups enjoying a family meal but we didn't feel isolated and the staff were ready for us whenever we needed them. A lovely evening for us and we will return.

User

Thank you so much - the food was fantastic and the service really great - nothing was to much - definitely recommend a busy!

User

Thank you Carly and team for a great dining experience. Food amazing, service faultless. We Will be back..!

User

Never been here before, but booked for my husbands birthday. The service was brilliant. We were served by Olivia. She took time to chat with us and the children. The food was excellent. Would highly recommend The Red Lion.

User

My wife, son and I had booked a table for 6:00pm. We were very warmly welcomed by Carly and as my son was on crutches she went out of her way to accommodate us on a suitable table where my son could have his leg raised. The menu was varied and inviting. My starter - the Black pudding potato cake with spinach, poached egg and hollandaise sauce was amazing; the main course of Rib-eye steak, onion rings, baby Kale and double cooked chips was to die for! We all thought our meals were beautifully presented, including the desserts - what excellent chefs! The atmosphere was just right and it is certainly a restaurant I would recommend and to which I will certainly return. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

User

I have become a regular at this pub and really enjoy the atmosphere and food! It's great if you want to relax and have a few drinks in the bar and a bite to eat! The service is always friendly and when it's busy it doesn't seem to be to much of an issue to get served. As I'm fairly new to Welwyn it has been a great place for me and my partner to get to know new people in the area. As for the comment below, I was in the pub that day when an aggressive bunch of people ruined the ambiance for everyone, one of them even went behind the bar and continuously shouted! Really fowl and intimidating way to behave, My partner made a point of thanking the manager on our way out for a lovely meal as she was surrounded by 3 girls shouting at her and an elderly man trying to get them away. Not the norm for a Sunday but me and Ian will be back as usual next week at our favourite local

User

Had 16th birthday celebrations here on Saturday 22nd April with a party of 18. What amazing service we received. Reece - you were fantastic - very attentive & helpful. The food was delicious and the area we were in was ideal for us.

Thank you so much. I will definitely recommend & return.

User

Great pub, staff are always nice, great service. lovely food to. I can take my dog there and he is treated like a celebrity.

User

Great meal here tonight. We were so

Well looked after by Carly, she was fantastic. My meal was the best food Ive eaten in a long time

User

Great food, great service and great atmosphere. We love this gastro pub and its menu and are in here most weekends! Wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone!

User

Fantastic service and food, we had the full 3 course and red wine experience and everything was well cooked and presented. I have also returned with my two dogs and my friend with her dog and we still had a great meal sitting in the bar. The dogs even got some cheeky treats from the bar staff.

User

Fab night last night went with my oldest girlfriends. Fab food and service thanks to all the staff who worked really hard. We finished the night in the bar!

User

Excellenti meal lovely atmosphere and good beers. Attentive friendly staff. Thank you.

User

Beautiful meal went last night all dishes were gorgeous. Our waiter Andrew was brilliant. We have booked for valentines already

User

Another great roast - you never let us down. Love to come here after a dog walk.

User

Amazing food. Nice settings and reasonable prices.

User

What a shame service wasn't up to much. Had to chase our olives....then our meal...once served everything was just warm. We were in s rush so couldn't send back however salmon whole food salad totally delicious..hubbys burger awesome... Kids pizza wasn't typical freezer food rubbish but proper home made & tasty. If this had been served hot & promot would say one of best meals we've had in long time.

User

We arrived early for lunch so had coffees in the bar area. The staff were very friendly & welcoming, however, the bar area is in definite need of a refurbishment. The chairs were very worn, grubby looking & tired. That said I have a very different review for the restaurant.

We visit Premier Country Inns often & the meal yesterday was on of the best we've had in a while. Well presented, extremely tasty & served by very pleasant staff, namely Carl & Liv in a very cosy atmosphere. The whole experience was enhanced by the receipt of a red rose for myself & my 98yr old Mother in Law, in celebration of International Women's Day. A lovely touch.

User

Nice friendly staff, half of the pub is set out with tables for food. I have eaten here is the past and was very pleased with the service and food, not that cheap but good quality. This time was just for a relaxed drink and that is what I got.

User

My wife and I held our 60th wedding anniversary lunch here on 21st January. The atmosphere was relaxed, the restaurant warm and the staff very cooperative. The food was excellent as one of our party, who is a chef himself, stated. We really enjoyed the food, starters, mains and desserts. The choice was excellent and our waitress Olivia could not have been more helpful. As Arnold says, "I will return"

User

My thanks to Bethany and your other servers for a wonderful meal. Great service, and a special thanks to Bethany for her helpfulness, attentiveness, good humour and good customer care. She's a credit to you and I hope we can come back soon, not just for the lovely food, but to be in the company of such lovely people as Bethany.

Happy New Year!

User

I don’t think it gives a very good impression when the manageress welcomes you with a sullen 'hiya' when we are standing at the entrance to the restaurant and says how can I help you, rather than Good afternoon. Do you have a booking. I never saw her smile the whole time we were in there. It may be a pressure job but she needs to at least pretend she is happy and set a good example to her staff.

That said our waitress was lovely, very helpful and the roast dinner and sticky toffee pudding was really tasty. Could have been slightly hotter tbh.

Our local restaurant and we always enjoy the food.

Best not to put a table for two by the large tables on which children and families sit though. Love children but don’t want them screaming in my ear over my Sunday lunch particularly

User

Good food, friendly efficient service and a pleasant ambiance

User

Went on Sunday party of 7 for Christmas menu which we pre ordered. Our table was booked for three p.m. So not at a really busy time. Food was lovely and the waiting staff were very nice but considering it was not really busy the service was slow. The ladies loo was in a quite a poor state and when bought to the attention of the duty manager he could not have cared any less. He was just about to finish his shift and was almost out the door and his attitude was almost flippant. Shame really.

User

Usually very good, but main meal was Luke warm apart from the roast potatoes. Service very good as always

User

Three of us for lunch yesterday, food is very tasty but i think a little over priced my sister had the vegan veg curry which was a pile of rice in sauce with four bits of veg on side and a whole chilli £12.50 to much (nan bread or poppadoms on the side would be nice ) waitress did not seem happy forgot drinks and never asked if we wanted any condiments with our meal.

User

Thought we would try this place tonight, an early table 6pm , the food was good , although the sticky toffee pudding could have been warmer , the service as others have mentioned was very slow and we had to grab someone's attention for everything. Even the barman served out deserts. The server apologised , but the service needs to improve.

User

The food was nice but the service was so slow. We waited 30 mins after the last person in our party had arrived for them to take just our drinks order. The staff were pleasant but this is the second time I have been (as its convenient for our group) and both times the service was bad so will not be going back

User

Nice pub but the lady who I presume is the manager should get a different job. She has a terrible attitude and simply does not know how to manage.

User

Thursday 29th Dec about 3ish very busy and no staff!! My wife and I sat in restaurant, the place is tired and dirty and I'm not talking about the table next to us not being cleared away throughout the whole duration we were there, I'm talking about the lamp shades have food across them the pictures on the walls are screaming to be cleaned, one barman and two restaurant staff,I saw 6 people queuing at the bar at one time,so managed to ask the manager in the restaurant for more drinks which came the reply,"yes, very busy at the moment will try once I've served the food? We didn't receive any more drinks! Far as i could the see nobody was happy that day, because not enough staff!! The only consolation on this was the food was lovely 4* but overall 2* because everything should compliment each other!

User

Service pretty poor given it took 2 hours to have lunch when there were only 3 tables taken and it was very cold in the building sadly food not bad.

User

Quite disappointed to say for sure as I used to waitress here myself, so decided to bring my family from america for a last goodbye meal and wish i hadnt! Service really has gone down hill. On a Friday evening never would the old manager Julie have had only 3 waiting staff! Even if short staffed she would of called all staff and as a team we would help cover! The staff had no people skills but if they where trained by the manager would make sence! Our menus where given with no recommendations not even soup of the day! Never once did a waiter ask us if we wanted more drinks there was no check backs to see of our meals were OK, had there been we could of then asked for a steak knife or some sauce for the children! When we did manage to get the attention to ask for another salt pot as the salt was wet plus some more drinks the manager herself slammed a salt pot on our table which was empty!! After 20minutes waiting i actually went to the bar to reorder an collect our drinks! (this wasn't the first time we had been to the bar, during our starters my brother went an collected drinks) When I approached the manager asking why we had to wait so long for a drink she told me they where coming an told me to sit back at my table an wait! To which I replied 'very professional' then made her aware that I only left Mitchell an Butler a year ago an that I'd worked in the red lion and the cowper arms for 3half years and it's a shame this is how it's being run now! But also stated that if the manager cant get a salt pot with salt then what hope do the staff have as they are lead by example. That must have sunk in as when requested the bill not only did she not put a card to give feed back an to enter into a prize draw (clearly didn't want the negative feedback) she discounted us 25% which worked out to be just over £50 which was appreciated but the reason behind the discount wasn't really explained again more avoidance to bad service! I'd like to be able to name names but we wasn't introduced or told who was waiting on us. Probally just as well!

User

Heavily over priced and very little food to show for that price!!! Really £23.50 for a fillet steak? Could go to Miller & Carter for better for less, good job we had good company

User

Not like it used to be... food is nasty and staff don’t care

User

Management are clearly not reading their reviews, we are here on Sunday and the issues we have have all been listed in previous reviews over the last year.

I hate giving 1* but perhaps whoever is managing this place (we wouldn’t know as our complaint to the waitress about a roast dinner clearly did not go further) should take the criticism and learn what not to do.
