On this day in 1951, Flt Lt John Alan Quinton, the navigator of a Wellington of No.228 OCU involved in a mid-air collision clipped the only parachute in reach to an ATC cadet flying as a passenger enabling him to escape, thus forfeiting his own life. He was posthumously awarded the George Cross for his act of outstanding bravery.

On this day in 1942, the Chief of Air Staff ACM Sir Charles Portal gave instructions to the Commander-in-Chief of Bomber Command Sir Arthur Harris to form a ‘Target Finding Force’. Harris objected the name and instead selected the title ‘Pathfinder Force’, which was formed four days later on 15th August.

We had a wonderful reception yesterday for our first 50 Year Reception, in which we celebrated those members that have been with us for over 50 years and their long and supportive membership of the Club. It was a lovely way to see so many of our longest serving members, and we look forward to our next reception on 19th August.

On 7 September, Dan Llywelyn Hall will be hosting the Dam Buster Gala Dinner at the RAF Club. Earlier this year, to mark the 75th anniversary of the famous Dam Busters raid, portraits of all 133 participating airmen of 617 Squadron painted by Dan were unveiled at the International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln. The dinner will ensure that this unique body of work remains intact by securing the collection’s display with the RAF Museum. Special guests will include historian ...Dr Robert Owen, author of 'The Complete Dam Busters' Charles Foster, George 'Johnny' Johnson, the last British Dam Buster, and Mosquito pilot Colin Bell. Tickets include a Champagne reception, a three-course dinner with wine in the Ballroom, a full colour souvenir book with biographical details of all 133 airmen, and a signed and numbered archival A2 print of the Dam Busters portrait collection (only with certain tickets). RIP Mary Ellis - one of the last surviving pilots of the ATA and a remarkable and heroic lady. We were incredibly privileged to welcome Mary to the Club earlier this year, when we received this striking painting by artist Ivan Berryman on her behalf. We are all deeply saddened to hear the news of her passing
