About The Running Mare

A gorgeous cosy pub full of rural charm and character sitting on the outskirts of Chelmsford. Offering food from 12pm-10pm daily and serving Cask Marque quality ales, a wide range of world largers, wines and spirits.

We are also dog and family friendly!

The Running Mare Description

The inn dates back to the 18th century and the first registered landlord was Robert Lemon. Prior to being named The Running Mare, the inn was known as The Trues, The Tanners and The King's Head. The tradition of changing names extends to the town in which the pub sits. In the Domesday Book of 1086 Chelmsford was called 'Celmeresfort' but by 1189, the town's name had changed to the current Chelmsford.
A country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character, our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

We had a lovely Sunday lunch, arriving early we had great service in a cosy pub with a real log fire, our meals were very nice and I can recommend the mixed grill.

User

Thanks to Adam and the team for a great night out. This place has improved so much. The menu tasting was great, the music was great and the atmosphere was great. Have I used 'great' too much? No, it was an amazing night.

User

Having won the valentines competition for a three course meal for two this was our first visit in over 25 years!

Food was really good, I was pleasantly surprised after reading some reviews. Starters were beautiful, Steak was well cooked and extremely tasty! I had to force the chocolate brownie (well it was free) lol . Staff were attentive and really friendly.

We will definitely be back. Thank you so much for our valentines meal! X I will just say that I haven’t given this 5 stars because it was free! The score would have been exactly the same had we of paid for all three courses.

User

Been coming to the Running Mare for about 14 years now. Food is always great and the staff have and are always friendly. Its our place to go on special occasions... can't fault it whatsoever

User

Went there yesterday for Mother‚Äôs Day lunch. Couldn‚Äôt get the time I wanted, half an hour later, but arrived early ‚Äėjust in case‚Äô. Unfortunately our table wasn‚Äôt ready so we sat in the bar and had a drink, which was fine, nice, pleasant surroundings. Got called through about 5 minutes after our booked time. Waitress was lovely, very pleasant and helpful. Bar staff that brought our drinks over was very pleasant too. Head waitress wasn‚Äôt quite so friendly, but not rude. Orders taken quite quickly and starter arrived very quickly. ‚ÄėGood‚Äô we thought, this is looking promising (as my son‚Äôs had to go to work). Unfortunately the main course took about three quarters of an hour to arrive and mine was cold! Sent it back expecting it to be zapped in the microwave, but when it eventually reappeared it was a fresh dinner and very hot. The food was lovely

I must say and worth waiting for, but we were running short of time by then. We had ordered some more drinks which didn’t seem to appear, so gave up on them, but they did eventually arrive. The dessert took a while coming too, but again was lovely, although my husband wasn’t so happy with his apple pie. We asked for the bill as our desserts arrived and that arrived straight away! lol. They had forgotten to take the deposit off, but that was soon rectified.

All in all it was a lovely meal in comfortable surroundings, I liked the way there were little sectioned off areas. On the whole, staff were pleasant and helpful. Think it was just unfortunate being Mother’s Day that it was so busy. May try another time when maybe not so busy.

User

Had a birthday celebrating here for about 23 people, waitress was lovely, waitwe about the right time between coarses as didn’t want to be rushed, everyone enjoyed their meal

User

While our server was very good, unfortunately the service from the kitchen appeared to be very lax. A couple of our selections were substituted by the kitchen without informing the waiting staff. However, the items were removed from our bill but the alternative meal selected was pretty average at best.

A couple of menu items were unavailable, but on New Year’s Day I suppose they’d had a run on over the Christmas period. However, having no mustard is quite unforgivable for a restaurant of this size.

All in all, not the greatest start for a family New Year’s dinner. I can’t see us rushing back there in a hurry.

User

We arrived at almost the start of Sunday Lunch. Ordered 3 Roasts which were on arrival all cold. We were told to be careful as plates were hot but contents stone cold and rather black Yorkshire. Waitress happily took them back but once returned one plate had all veg missing and the new Yorkshire was so hard you could not even cut it. We ordered Mini puds for dessert and the Apple pie had no pastry on the top.!. Shaw Farm is part of the same chain and what a difference in food. Absolutely steaming hot there and tasty. Disappointed with the Running Mare, first time eating there and it was our Christmas Meal for LWL with friend travelling from Norfolk and one from Bognor. Our waitress was delightful and i feel a tad embarrassed at our poor show of a Sunday Roast.

User

It was OK at best. We were a party of nine and we went on Mother’s Day. The starters were OK although one had to be sent back because it was barely warm. The roasts were dry and the meat hard from being kept warm for far too long. However, three people had the chicken and pulled gammon pie and said it was delicious. The vegetables were the same for all of us though. Dreadfully over cooked and then kept warm until they were tasteless and soggy. Everyone was fine with their desserts. The service was fine, although having served us luke warm meals we then had to wait for fresh cutlery to be bought to our table. To be honest it was very over priced for the quality of food we were served. We were out for a family meal and we made the best of it but nothing about it would make us want to go again.

User

Have to say we have been many times in the past and never a complaint! Visited yesterday with family for a special birthday celebration and was disappointed. I ordered a main & dessert only for the waitress (after a long wait!) to come back and say they were unavailable. Then the main I chose was cold and lacking in taste!! When the desserts came we had another long wait and had to ask where our coffees were that we ordered with them. The waitress was very apologetic and not her fault. I think more waiting staff are needed.

User

Well what can i say just meh, rock hard roast potatos which were black and the yorkshire puds were just terrible so flat with no colour or flavour. One of the managers is here now talking to is and i will say he is helpful but still not happy with the meal. Such a shame ÔŅĹ

User

The pub itself is very nice but the service was appalling! We were a party of 9 and in the 2 hours we were there we eventually got served with a drink and main course. We couldn't wait any longer for desert or coffee. Very disappointing!

User

I’m sad to write this as I have had nice meals here over the years however.

Arrived at 8pm for dinner, and told there was limited veg available (not for the first time).

Ordered a burger which was tasteless and dry.

The table opposite had the previous occupants empty plates untouched for the hour we were there. Other tables were messy. Christmas tree and decorations were strewn across an area at the back.

A waitress walked round the restaurant with a dirty tea towel draped over her shoulder and wasn’t wearing a apron.

A few weeks ago we tried eating there only to be told they were having a staff training evening and were not open, despite all the lights being on, a welcome sign outside, the front door open and no indication to the contrary.

It seems as though the establishments staff require a full week of training, not an evening when customers might actually want to spend money there.

User

First of all, the setting itself is lovely and has a real country pub feel and vibe to it. Lovely exterior and interior. HOWEVER, we came here for lunch today and from start to finish it was shocking. There were two servers on the bar who were also running food out and so the bar queues got very long. When we got to the bar first of all it wasn't too bad but the young lady and young man were having an animated discussion about how the drinks orders were backing up - should have been a warning sign there! It seem rather disorganised when another lady server was bringing food out into the garden and several times she seemed to have no idea where she was taking it and then exclaimed "it was because everyone kept moving" although I had seen no such movement since I got there. When our food eventually came after a considerable wait it was hardly appetizing to say the least. My young neice had children's hunters chicken and the bacon was so dry she even mentioned this herself and handed the bacon to her dad which seemed to be rock hard and held it's shape as though it was a piece of cardboard rather than a nice piece of bacon. This was a theme that was continued through the meal as many of us had roasts and the portions were very small and the meat was so tough I thought it might have been sitting there since last weekend, it was unpleasant to eat. I also noticed a small hole in my Yorkshire pudding which seem to be filled with a floury substance which I can only assume was uncooked pudding mixture, either that ornindont want to think what else! My brother had the adults hunters chicken and this was meant to come with chips but there were hardly any there. It was such a disappointment and I assume this was an off day as I know it is a vintage inn, as is our local "fowlers farm" which is a lot better in quality. Afraid to say I won't be returning.

User

Coffee not good and lunch service was extremely poor. Waited a long time for both courses to be served. Lots of alternative venues in the area and sorry will probably not be returning.

User

Booked for Mother's Day, don't go if you want somewhere nice to eat. We had roast beef, thin slices, dry, tough to eat, curled up at the edges. Complained but no comeback, not interested. Dirty cutlery and wine glasses. Big disappointment. Don't waste your money.

User

This is a lovely looking pub, wooden beams and open fire, and has previously delivered a good but basic pub menu. That's the positives over. This is one of my locals and I have had some good nights, both for food and drink. I've also had some horror nights. However, you stay loyal to your local!!! Not any more! The staff are pleasant and friendly. But, spend most of their time apologising for the blundering mistakes that are being consistently made, by a lack of any obvious management. This place needs to be grabbed by the horns and transformed into the reliable, warm, welcoming local pub that it once was. Such a shame, as it has the potential to be great.

User

Sadly, this review is not a good one! We booked, on recommendation, for a New Year's Eve meal. The prawn and lobster starter was bereft of sauce. I was still eating the last of the rustic bread when the plate was whisked away! The roast pork dinner was a warmed up leftovers from lunchtime - the pork was tasteless - it tasted processed - no crackling would support this; the roast potatoes were re-heated and soggy: I have never seen a Yorkshire pudding that looked more like a pancake and was tasteless. To cover the awful meal was a good covering of gravy - although it disguised the look of the dinner it did nothing to enhance the taste. All in all not the best of experiences and certainly not cheap! Would we return - an emphatic 'No'!

Hi, my family attended here tonight for a memorial meal for my grandad, we arrived earlier then our time so had a drink at the bar, our waitress then came over and took us to our table, she gave us our menus and took another order for drinks which we waited for 20 minutes for these to come over and we had to ask for these! We choose our meals, she then came back and took our choices, until one person ordered a meal and we was then told it wasn’t available along with two other meals, she said we should have been told this at the start, but she didn’t state that, then we waited just over an hour to ask the waitress where our meal was and she said it’s coming out, we asked again 20 minutes later and it finally arrived, it was now 2 hours later and we are still waiting for the waitress to bring over the dessert menus she asked if we wanted 10 minutes ago, we was then told they had limited menus and was waiting for another table to finish with them. We spoke to the manager that apologised and offered to take our desserts for us, she took this and then the manger came over and said she was just going back to get them, 20 minutes later they appear, we said to our waitress it wasn’t her fault as she was the only waitress working from 10pm which she stated it was only her 3rd day working there. It was now 10:45 and we are still waiting for our bill. The manager did apologise and did take money off the bill, just such a shame this all happened.

It was OK at best. We were a party of nine and we went on MotherÔÇÖs Day.

Well what can i say just meh, rock hard roast potatos which were black and the yorkshire puds were just terrible so flat with no colour or flavour. One of the managers is here now talking to is and i will say he is helpful but still not happy with the meal. Such a shame ´┐¢

The pub itself is very nice but the service was appalling! We were a party of 9 and in the 2 hours we were there we eventually got served with a drink and main course. We couldn't wait any longer for desert or coffee. Very disappointing!

IÔÇÖm sad to write this as I have had nice meals here over the years however.

A waitress walked round the restaurant with a dirty tea towel draped over her shoulder and wasnÔÇÖt wearing a apron.

A few weeks ago we tried eating there only to be told they were having a staff training evening and were not open, despite all the lights being on, a welcome sign outside, the front door open and no indication to the contrary.

It seems as though the establishments staff require a full week of training, not an evening when customers might actually want to spend money there.

Coffee not good and lunch service was extremely poor. Waited a long time for both courses to be served. Lots of alternative venues in the area and sorry will probably not be returning.

Booked for Mother's Day, don't go if you want somewhere nice to eat. We had roast beef, thin slices, dry, tough to eat, curled up at the edges. Complained but no comeback, not interested. Dirty cutlery and wine glasses. Big disappointment. Don't waste your money.

We choose our meals, she then came back and took our choices, until one person ordered a meal and we was then told it wasnÔÇÖt available along with two other meals, she said we should have been told this at the start, but she didnÔÇÖt state that, then we waited just over an hour to ask the waitress where our meal was and she said itÔÇÖs coming out, we asked again 20 minutes later and it finally arrived, it was now 2 hours later and we are still waiting for the waitress to bring over the dessert menus she asked if we wanted 10 minutes ago, we was then told they had limited menus and was waiting for another table to finish with them. We spoke to the manager that apologised and offered to take our desserts for us, she took this and then the manger came over and said she was just going back to get them, 20 minutes later they appear, we said to our waitress it wasnÔÇÖt her fault as she was the only waitress working from 10pm which she stated it was only her 3rd day working there. It was now 10:45 and we are still waiting for our bill. The manager did apologise and did take money off the bill, just such a shame this all happened.
