11+ entrance exams: changes are on the way. Schools are beginning to move away from the more traditional form of written papers and towards on-line assessments. The North London Independent Girls' Schools Consortium are reviewing their 11+ entrance exam for 2019. Two interesting articles worthy of a read with up to date information:

Grit. Apparently that is the key to success. How can it be taught? By teaching a positive growth mindset. This excellent TED talk says it all. https://www.ted.com/…/angela_lee_duckwo rth_grit_the_power_o…

Utterly brilliant and utterly funny read. Love Lauren Child's humour. Have rediscovered my 8 year old self!

A shout out for Millie and Waldegrave School. Just goes to show that hard work and determination do pay off, especially when combined with excellent maths teaching. Waving my flag from the sidelines in support!

So this is book 1 of 20. Think I really need to dig deep and find the nine year old in me to appreciate the humour. 'We laughed so much it hurt.' Sophie , aged 9. I am currently pain free! However, just found a corker of a description: 'she had lovely sandy hair like a cat's daydream and a smile like the Bank of England. And when she laughed the sunlight went splashing off her pretty teeth like diamonds in search of adventure.'

I have decided to set myself the challenge of reading these 20 books over the summer. Who is up for joining me? There is no better way to inspire a child to read than by modelling it - and with the very material that is written for them. Do share your likes/dislikes and any inspirational stories that result from your challenge. I will keep you posted with my own journey. I'm starting off with Mr Gum because I am reminded of a child who once dressed up as him on World Book Day. It always makes me laugh when I think back on it.

Comma use No. 2. The comma precedes conjunctions which join two simple sentences together. In this case 'so.' Check out Mr Bruff's website for more.

Trying to put a bit of colour and fun into learning grammar. The next five posts will show 5 ways to use a comma in writing. My lovely young assistant illustrates No1: use a comma to separate items in a list.

Off to a cool start at The School Room Teddington this afternoon.
