The ShīʿAh Institute - المعهد الشيعي Description

The Shīʿah Institute facilitates and promotes scholarship on Shīʿah Ithnā ʿAsharī Islam, its heritage, and its peoples. It provides a forum for the highest standard of scholarship and research and the academic dissemination of the timeless and universal aspects of the Shīʿah tradition.

The Institute’s research and publications aim to present diverse approaches founded upon effective traditions of textual scholarship and hermeneutics, complemented by modern academic methodologies in order to preserve, illuminate, and share the Shīʿah intellectual tradition.

The Shīʿah Institute is an independent, non-political organisation and is committed to collaboration with academic institutes and organisations with similar aims.

The Institute is dedicated to sharing the rich tradition of Shīʿah scholarship with humanity and to ensuring a bright future for quality academic research pertaining to Shīʿah Islam.

Planning for the future of scholarly excellence in Shīʿī studies: The Shīʿah Institute Symposia 2019-2026

On 14th and 15th December 2017, the Shīʿah Institute hosted its third symposium on the subject of ‘Nahj al-Balāghah: The Word of ʿAlī’, at The Warburg Institute, University of London. The Dean of the Shīʿah Institute, Dr Sayyid Amjad H. Shah Naqavi inaugurates the Symposium with a welcome note.
“As the Paramount source for the word of the Prince of the Believers (amīr al-muʾminīn) ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, the Nahj al-Balāghah—compiled by al-Sharīf al-Raḍī in 400 AH/ 1010 CE—is a f...oundational text of Arabic literature and an enduring font of the spiritual and intellectual life of Islam. There is no doubt that the words of of Imām ʿAlī, have exercised as profound and formative impact on the development of the Arabic language, as Shakespeare, the King James’ Bible, and Milton, have had on English”.
The symposium, a first of its kind on this subject saw leading scholars from around the world explore key themes pertaining to the ‘Nahj al-Balāghah: The Word of ʿAlī’.

We are pleased to announce the publication of the first volume in the Shī’ah Institute Symposia Series: ‘Philosophy and the Intellectual Life in Shīʿah Islam’, co-edited by Saiyad Nizamuddin Ahmad and Sajjad Rizvi. On the 14th and 15th December the Shīʿah Institute hosted its third symposium at the Warburg Institute, University of London, this year on the topic of ‘Nahj al-Balāghah: The Word of ʿAlī’. Over two days, twelve international scholars of the Nahj al-Balāghah presented papers on the differing receptions of the work, its extensive commentary tradition, the context in which it was compiled, as well as its enduring literary, theological, and mystical dimensions.
