Join today's #BriefEncounter short talk at 1pm - exploring this delicate Pilgrim Flask from the 16th century. ‘Pilgrim flasks’ are so named because their form was inspired by the flasks of similar form which, made from less fragile materials such as leather or metal, were used by travellers such as pilgrims. #WallaceEducation #freeevents

English portrait and landscape painter Thomas Gainsborough died on this day, 2 August 1788 (aged 61). Here he paints Miss Elizabeth Haverfield aged around 8 or 9 years. A beautiful example of the artist's late work. #OTD

#WallaceCuratorPick | Falchion, Italian, c. 1550 This extremely fine shortsword, a wide curved blade falchion, was made for Cosimo I de’Medici, duke of Florence, later grand duke of Tuscany - one of the century’s most powerful Italian princes. The blade carries the famous palle (balls) device of the Medici family, encircled by the collar of the Burgundian chivalric Order of the Golden Fleece, of which Cosimo was a member.

On this day 31 July 1653, the Battle of Scheveningen (the final naval battle of the First Anglo-Dutch War) took place. In this painting by Willem van de Velde the Younger, the Dutch fireship in the foreground is about to ram the Andrew, commanded by the English Rear-Admiral, Thomas Graves. #OTD

Jean-Urbain Guérin's miniature of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, and Lady Elisabeth Foster shown here, can be seen as a token of friendship between the two women. They were infamously involved in a love triangle with the Duke of Devonshire in the late 18th century, but developed a strong friendship and perhaps even love for one another in spite of this. #InternationalFriendshipDay

Wallace quickly became famous for his fortune and philanthropy. He received many letters asking for money and it was probably him who assembled many of the envelopes in an album currently in our exhibition. One is addressed simply Monsieur R Wallace Milionnaire En Ville. #RW200 #WallaceBirthday

User

Contemporaries testified to Wallace’s kindness, good nature and empathy. The artist William Symonds, who painted his portrait in 1885, recalled: "My impression of Sir Richard was particularly the charm of his personality & his extreme kindness." #RW200 #WallaceBirthday

Wow ! Wow! And Wow! ... inspiring calming and simply a gift not to be missed. Set aside some time and the crazy digital world ... deep breath .. enter this amazing building and be prepared for such wonder and surprise ... such creative gifts that will transcend time and space ..... I went by myself but wanted to stop my fellow visitors that day in every room and say ... " is this place freaking awesome or what?!!! " ... I didn't of course but the emotion was 11 out of 10 😊... do not miss this moment people 👍

User

Well what can I say?! I’m concerned that if I praise it too highly, too many people will visit it! Lol! This gem of a place was a great find and is a must for anyone visiting London. The exhibitions are first class, as well as being interesting and informative but not overdoing any one group of exhibits. If you can try and join one of the free guided tours which gives you a taster through the exhibition and then after explore further. There is so much to see but we will now return to see more. The restaurant is good too, with excellent service. Let’s hope the whole place doesn’t become too over-run!

We had an enjoyable time spent around 2 to 3 hours there, Art and Armoury plentiful, fantastic location.

Make your donation on the way out suggested amount is £5.

Wallace Collection is an amazing secret in the heart of West End London.

User

This was a lovely place to visit that I was unaware was in the heart of London. After looking around the fascinating artwork and armoury we then had a coffee and cake in the very pleasant courtyard in the centre of the building. Well worth a visit and I will definately be going again.

User

This museum is my favorite in London. The cafe is fantastic. The afternoon tea is lovely and extremely affordable. The staff loves to answer questions and tell you about the collection. 5000 pieces on display. An absolute gem.

User

The most wonderful collection, in a beautiful building. A great place to visit.

User

The Wallace Collection is a must see when in London. There are hundreds of paintings by the likes of Rubens, Rembrandt, Canaletto etc. If armoury & weapons interest you there's a whole room devoted to these. I was also impressed by the beautiful pieces of furniture. Allow several hours to view this gorgeous house

User

People overuse the word Breathtaking to explain something amazing, but truly, every new room I entered physically made my heart jump with historical love, my eyes wide with visually stimulating design and artifact curation, and my jaw drop from sheer awe of the colour, variety, and overall aura of each space. This is truly one of London's greatest Gems of a museum, with a fantastic and enthusiastic staff as well.

User

Our first visit but it won’t be our last! Too much to see in one go. Brilliant and free entry. Great day out. My favourite being the ceramics and my husband loved all the artwork

A lovely and diverse collection of art, armour and weapons in their original settings. This is a lightly-visited gallery so you can linger to your heart's content at your favourites.

User

The El Greco to Goya exhibition fascinating.Generally a great place to visit - hard to believe it's so easy to escape from Oxford St and its environs in just a few minutes.Enter a different world! (Plus the loos are really good) And coffee and Eggs Benedict at the lovely restaurant there was spot on.

User

Afternoon tea was lovely in lovely surroundings with a friendly waiter then we enjoyed wondering round the collection Disappointed that members of staff in each room were only security and had no knowledge of the beautiful items around them as I soon found when I asked a couple of questions and found they had no idea. However this is a wonderful collection quite breathtaking well worth a visit and unbelievably no entrance fee.
