Brilliant evening at the Yew Tree celebrating my sisters baby shower.

The staff were fantastic, especially Bryan the manager who interacted with us all evening and made us laugh.

The food was very good too, and when there was a delay with one of the deserts they gave it to us on the house.

Just visited for Sunday dinner, for starter we ordered the cheddar fondue which was ÂŁ10 We recieved a pot of cheese to share one cucumber stick one carrot stick and a piece of asparagus and piece of toast each. We did not receive any chutney or beetroot pickle and was extremely disappointed by the quantity of a 'sharer' dish. Main we ordered roasts which were lovely however ordered a side of cauliflour cheese which barely had any cheese on, we ordered two drinks which the staff did not know how to make and took multiple staff members to finally make. Finally we got the salted caramel sundae to share it says it comes with chocolate and vanilla ice cream and cheese cake pieces ours did not have chocolate ice cream or cheese cake pieces. Very disappointing visit however the staff were very welcoming.

User

Eaten here a few times and its always been lovely, but went this Sunday and ordered exactly the same thing I had 3 weeks ago and it wasn't great at all. Had the patĂŠ to start which last time included a large chunk of toasted fresh bread with butter, chutney and pate all on the plate. Gorgeous. Absolutely delicious. This time I got 1 slice of brown kingsmill, not toasted like advertised, a slab of patĂŠ, one tiny portion of butter and some random lettuce on my plate. No chutney. This was at opposite ends of the spectrum to what I had before! What has happened in the last few weeks? Couldnt help but feel let down!

Went for Father’s Day lunch. As we had been unlucky on mother’s day due to a fire in the kitchen.

Staff were very welcoming and venue is lovely. When seated we were told they were busy and we would have a wait for food. To be honest it wasn’t half as busy as Mother’s Day.

Food arrived not very warm but we ate as we had waited so long.

My Husband had chicken burger and was going to just have that thinking it would be substantial good job he didn’t as portion was not massive.

Desert was fine but again waited ages for it.

We've dined at the Yew Tree quite a few times and it's always been good in the past, but yesterday was lacklustre in comparison.

The manager's attitude came across as condescending on occasion and he seemed lacking in willingness to help when we asked if we could move due to sunlight blinding my mother and were palmed off with some nonsense about not having curtains due to health and safety - if that's the case put external awnings in place or use frosted window film at the top of the windows to reduce glare!

After being moved to another table, the food when served was not particularly hot, but otherwise tasty. The crackling was also very disappointing, I got a tiny piece served on my plate and so our server bought more, but it was just seasoned pig skin that hadn't really crackled at all due to all the fat being removed - crackling needs fat or it is not real crackling!

The other plates were cleared whilst I was still eating my main, which I feel is poor service and extremely rude. We were then offered dessert menus, but it took a very long time for anyone to take our order and then even longer for the kitchen to produce 2 sundaes, a creme brulee and a crumble; we asked someone and were told they were "on their way" yet nothing appeared after a further 10 mins had elapsed - so much so that we cancelled our desserts and just requested the bill as we were fed up by this point.

The manager did offer to take one of the meals off as recompense for the poor experience, which was a nice gesture and appreciated. He then explained that he was down three staff due to an unexpected incident, whilst he had our sympathies of being short-staffed for sunday lunch, if these issues had been communicated at the outset (e.g. saying something like "we are short-staffed today hopefully this won't affect your meal with us, but service may be a little slower than usual - please bear with us and thanks in advance for your understanding") then it would have better managed our expectations rather than just feeling like our table was forgotten about! For good customer service communication is key!

Hopefully it will be better the next time we go as we have had some great meals there, on this occasion though it was not a great experience.

We went there last night for a dinner to which we were told it’s a 45 minutes wait for food, which was fine we didn’t book a table our own fault then we got taken to the pub side for dinner which he then said oh no let’s put you in the restaurant side to which we were surprised as we saw all of the pub it wasn’t packed at all so was rather surprised it was a 45 minute wait but we sat down then ordered or drinks, which then we had another 3 staff ask us if we were wanting drinks or ready to order our food even thought we had been there under five minutes, we ordered our dinner I wanted the soup of the day for starter which was spinach and my toddler ordered and partner ordered their meals, while waiting for them for about 35 minutes a staff member shouted shit, so we were like what the heck happening to then ten minutes after be told that the spinach soup wasn’t there and mushroom was and the reason for taking so long it because a staff member had been taken to hospital ... which is fine but it was the chef not was it our waitress, yes being understaffed is hard but then you have customers to attend too I’ll also say it was a blue light job, then I changed my starter to which was pig in Yorkie to then it to come out burnt and my partners and toddlers food to be cold and had a seal from where they had been standing under the heated plate for ages awaiting on mine to come, our main then came after being sat there another 30 minutes I ordered a garden summer salad bowl with chicken to which my chicken was burnt and the new potatoes were rock solid, ask to have them cooked again for them to bring it out after Microwaved, we knew this as the potatoes were all shrivelled up with all the other vegetables and then the waitress to tell us they pre cook them and micro wave them when needed, not what I expecting at all very disappointed and won’t be coming there again, they should perhaps get a new chef or more chefs, as their one is struggling so much in the kitchen but having to part cook things and microwave them before serving them makes you wonder what else they do.

Very disappointing visit to the yew tree yesterday!! It’s supposed to be a child friendly restaurant but this was not the experience we received. I booked a table to celebrate my friends birthday bringing along both of our 21 month old children. The children are at an age where they don’t want to be sat at the table the whole time (it is boring for them after all), even though we came prepared with colouring books and toys. Therefore every now and again they were getting down from the table and walking over to the doors that open out onto the garden to look outside. They weren’t misbehaving or causing any problems and other members of the public that were visiting the restaurant were happily chatting away to them. The manager clearly had a problem with this, as he made a comment when passing our table that the children were in the way and how they were trying to serve food to customers. I fully appreciate that the members of staff have a job to do and that it’s not a play ground but they are children after all and I could see no harm in what they were doing. My friend and I don’t often go out for lunch in restaurants with the children, as it is difficult at times but as it was a special occasion we thought it would be nice. The manager then continued to give us filthy looks every time one of the children left the table, which made us feel very uncomfortable and not welcome. In the end my friend complained to one of the members of staff about the way we were being treated. I have to say that this particular waitress was very apologetic and suggested maybe we would like to move to the top of the restaurant where there was only one other person that also had a small child. We agreed to move as it gave the children more freedom to move around and we were out of the way of everyone else that was having there lunch. Why when I booked the table with 2 small children, they didn’t think to put us on a table at the top of the restaurant in the first place, where we would have been out of the way and we wouldn’t have had to be treated the way we were, I do not know!! When we asked to speak to the manager about the situation, he had very little to say and offered to take the children’s meals off our bill. Don’t get me wrong, this was a kind gesture but it was not the reason we were complaining! I have to say that the food was lovely, it’s just a shame that the manager couldn’t be a little more understanding of parents with small children. I most definitely will not be visiting the yew tree again to be made to feel the way we were and would not recommend to anyone with children!!

The manager was very obnoxious. I arrived with the Luton town supporters and he was ignorant to all of us. He seemed like he was panicking and he couldn't handle a big crowd. The waitresses and the barman was very polite though. All the supporters was well behaved so I don't know why he treated us all so bad.

Had a roast the pork was cold and they forgot the stuffing, and what are you suppose to do with half a grilled red apple ( which was as sour as can be and green )

Then hot chocolate fudge cake was tepid and coke was flat ďż˝

From the moment we walked through the door we felt like an inconvenience to the manager Paul and assistant manager Bryon. Granted, we turned up as a party of 11 without a booking early on a Saturday - but if there was going to be no room for us they could have politely turned us away.

We were told there were no tables in the restaurant area as they were all fully booked and that it would be at least an hour before we could expect food, several times - I thought this might just be them making sure we understood our food could take a while so we wouldn’t complain about the wait - very understandable but having 5 hungry children in our party and knowing it would take us longer to get ourselves together, get to and then get settled somewhere else it would most likely take at least that amount of time if not longer. We decided to stay as we’d all heard good things about the food and decided it would be worth the wait, so they kindly pushed 2 tables together in the bar so we could all sit together. After a rocky start things seemed like they would be ok...

We were reminded again there would be at least an hours wait on food so we quickly ordered the children’s food, a starter and a main then after a few minutes more ordered our own. I asked if it would be alright to take the children outside while we waited and if they could drop a penny in the fountain by which I was met with a lecture about safety and how the children should behave - yes, fair enough thank you for the warnings but the picture that was painted was that the outdoor area was unsuitable for the children and that there was a ground level pond to be wary around with our unruly lot!

The children were supervised by 3 adults at all times whilst outside but still the assistant manager made us feel uncomfortable when he popped his head out “to look for glasses” (no one else had been outside at the time!)

On a positive note, our food came out relatively quickly! Although it would have been nice if it had been at the same time - some of our party had nearly finished before the other adult meals had come out and even though we’d ordered it all first and explained we’d like the children’s food out asap, they all had to sit there and wait a good 15 minutes for their mains! Luckily we had a few toys and such to keep them entertained but this is really poor management. - try explaining to hungry 5 year olds why all the grown ups have food and they don’t.

I’d also like to point out that in the 2 and a half hours we were here at least half the tables in the restaurant and bar remained empty!

The behaviour and attitude of the 2 managers leads me to believe that they just didn’t want to deal with a big party including 5 children - not very “family friendly” if you ask me!

For my father-in-law’s 70th birthday we booked over a month in advance for 14 of us to eat here, only being allowed a 5.30 slot (as they were so busy). We had to pay a deposit and pre-order all of the food we wanted, which is fair enough considering our party size. Arriving early, we were seated and then told that only 2 of the meals could be served and the rest had to be re-ordered due to a new menu. Then we were told that many of the dishes that were on the menu were not available and that food would take longer as they had agency chefs who didn’t know the kitchen or the menu. The children were getting hungry and around 7pm, our food began to be served. Out of the first 3 dishes, 2 were sent back, being either wrong or missing something. We were then brought drinks that were not ours and eventually had what we’d all ordered (the second attempt... and from a limited new menu!)

All the while we were there, the restaurant was pretty empty, and we were given no reason as to why we ‘had’ to have a 5.30 slot. As we left around 8pm, the restaurant was less than half full.

The waitress, Julie, was lovely and very apologetic about the situation, but at no point did the manager come over and apologise or even give a reason as to why no one could have called in advance to tell us the menu had changed or that many of the items on the menu were unavailable, even though we’d pre-ordered a few weeks in advance. The food was ok - pretty standard and nothing special, but the whole experience was sub-standard and very disappointing. If the waitress hadn’t been so nice and we weren’t out for a big family occasion, we would have complained.

I would not recommend this as a place to eat.

We both decided to have the roast beef.... goose fat roast spuds...... well done you have a chef that can use a microwave. They came out and they looked like the microwave roast dinner you get at Iceland. As for the BREADS”” and oils a slice of bread each wow your chef must be proud.

User

Thought it would be nice to pop along to The Yew Tree for an evening meal but how wrong we were. Our order was taken incorrectly which we only found out because one of the starters we didn’t actually order was not available. We then got them to double check the rest of the order. When the mains arrived the sauce was missing for the steak, the gourmet chicken burger was inedible and the mixed grill was missing items. We asked for the sauce and were told that we hadn’t ordered it even though we knew we had so that was brought to the table about 5 mins later. Whilst we were sitting at the table there was a lot of shouting and what sounded like mucking about coming from the kitchen along with loud music which did not come across as very professional. Basically if you just want a drink then fine but if you want a nice meal then avoid like the plague.

User

Just had my birthday celebration here. Have to say, as nice as the staff were, the place has gone downhill. Had to wait over half an hour between first and second courses, then when our mains arrived they were cold. They had to be taken away, and were simply warmed up, rather than replaced with fresh hot food. we were given free desserts by way of compensation, but our 4 dinners still came to over ÂŁ90. Expensive for cold roast dinners. Shame. Used to be excellent when the South African chap was in charge. Just will add....they block you on here if you complain about the crap service and food. Suggest everyone checks Tripadvisor for latest reviews.

User

I wish I could give zero stars!!!

Turned up, they seated us (next to a noisy family when there were lots of spaces...just as a side note!!) took ages to get drinks, and then when we went to order, what we wanted they didn’t have because their freezers were broken and everything we were able to eat (pretty much) wasn’t available. Could have been told us that before being seated. Then we went to pay for our drinks at the bar after deciding there was nothing we were able to eat, stood at the bar for five minutes. The bar man saw us standing there. Then two ladies came to the bar and he went to serve them instantly!! Fair enough he appeared to be in training, but any idiot knows the “first come, first served” saying!!! Really disappointed as have had loads of negative experiences at the Yew Tree in recently years. It use to be such a lovely place, but clearly management and training is lacking!!! Won’t be returning until word of mouth spreads that it’s vastly improved!!!

I am writing a review the day after our booking for my brothers birthday, as I was so angry with how we were treated yesterday I couldn’t even speak. The day started off well, I had booked a table for 9 and we were originally put on a table in a dark corner. It being a lovely sunny day, I asked to be moved and this was done straight away and I was allowed to decorate the table as we have several young children with us and this was exciting for them.

We then had a waitress come over and take our drinks order, the drinks took a rather long time to come but we didn’t notice or mind much at the time. She then took our food order, the starter again took a rather long time to come out but again, we didn’t time it or mind that much. My partner and Dad shared a butchers block which was pretty unimpressive. The menu made it sound like a large amount of food and it really wasn’t. They had half a sausage roll on there to share amongst a few other things, including cheap poor quality sausages.

The main course took over an hour to come out, and by this time the restaurant was empty and most service staff were standing around near the bar. I appreciate that when we had first arrived the small garden was full and the restaurant less than half full, so they were a bit busy then, but not by the time our main course should have been done. I asked our waitress Carly, where our food was and she said she would check. Who was very sullen and stroppy and didn’t smile the whole time we were there. She went in the kitchen, then went and carried on doing something else, not one word to me about where our food was. So I walked round to the bar again and asked another more friendly waitress to check, she did and told us our food was next to be plated and would be ten minutes. The next plated meal came out- wasn’t our meal, was someone else’s. We gave them the benefit of the doubt and waited another ten minutes. We then decided we didn’t want to wait any longer. So I walked round to the bar AGAIN and told them to cancel our main and that we are going and won’t be paying for the service we have received. During this time of waiting all in all from 1:30 to 3:30, and not having received our mains. We hadn’t had one waitress come back and ask if we wanted another drink, despite them mostly standing by the bar. We had to walk round and get them ourselves from the bar. They never came and cleared any of the glasses from the table, asked if we needed anything, or explained to us why there was a wait. Not one word.

What followed was absolutely shocking from somewhere whose purpose is to provide a service to customers. I was told that we were told there would be 30 minute wait for food by Bryan, we were absolutely not told this by our waitress. The waitress Carly then shouted at me saying she did tell us and laughed at me. Naturally this did make me angry and I raised my voice and asked her if she was arguing with me. She replied she wasn’t but she did tell us the waiting time. (Still arguing). The wait of 30 minutes we could have accepted if we had been told, but it was irrelevant as we had been waiting over an hour between our starters and mains, and even lied to when we asked when our food was coming. The restaurant by this point was nearly empty, and they were still using the excuse they had been busy.

We then were making our way out to leave and ask for our birthday cake back, and the manager Bryan came over the bar waving a receipt and a pen. He was intending to make us pay for the poor starters and drinks we had first ordered (as the rest had been ordered and paid for at the bar). I refused to and he said we had to, despite the appallingly awful service we had received. In the end my Mum paid for the service as I had to leave because I was so angry with the way I had been spoken to. I don’t believe Bryan and Carly can communicate well at all, they couldn’t answer my questions properly or give valid answers and argued back with me. They really are in the wrong job, it really seemed like they couldn’t deal with the environment they were in at all. That being said all the other waitresses were very friendly and very good with my little girl and that was the ONLY positive part of our meal, so thank you to them.

Had we been given any sort of explanation when we sat down or throughout our whole two hours of being there and only having a few drinks and a starter, or been offered any sort of service at all, we have been a bit more forgiving. The whole experience was awful, especially for a birthday meal that included young children who were excited. It was an afternoon wasted, and we went home and ordered Pizza Express on Deliveroo, which came in 30 minutes from 3 miles down the road, which when you compare it to The Yew Tree, it really is funny! We have written an email to Chef and Brewer to express our anger and concern, but hopefully this review will ensure other people don’t make the same mistake as us in choosing the Yew Tree.
