About Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park

Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park

Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park Description

Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park is the most urban woodland in London.

Historically it's one of London's Magnificent Seven cemeteries and was closed to burials in 1966, that same year being re-designated as a Park by Act of Parliament. It is now a designated Local Nature Reserve and Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation.

Ackroyd Drive Green Link is one of a several green space additions, along with Scrapyard Meadow on our southern boundary included under the Cemetery Park's Local Nature Reserve status. It runs between Bow Common Lane and Burdett Road E3 and it is a series of 4 green compartments divided by an allotment site. Each compartment has it's own unique character and the Friends aim to manage the Green Link as windows to the main Cemetery Park. We aim to exhibit in a smaller space all the wonderful things that can be seen in the Cemetery Park.

The Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park were set up 1990 and have the day to day care and management of the site and undertake all the work across its 3 broad themes of wildlife, people and education. The practical nature conservation projects involve over 3000 volunteers every year.

Whilst it is a place of remembrance and local history, the existing monuments now stand romantically amongst mature broadleaved woodland and wildflower meadows. The hard work of volunteers under the guidance of the Friends has made this inner City nature reserve home to a number of rare and endangered species of plants and animals. The Park boasts 60 + bird species, 27 butterfly species (making the site the richest for butterflies in urban London), along with UK rare bumblebees, flies, spiders and beetles. It is also home to an over subscribed education service that works with 8500 school children every year using the Park as the classroom as part of National Curriculum linked environmental workshops. Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park is a vibrant place filled with life and a hub of activity and fun!

Being one of London's Magnificent Seven Cemeteries we get many visitors who come to see us as part of paying a call to all Seven of London's Victorian Cemeteries. Mortuary Gem is one such visitor and she followed up her visit with this lovely blog piece. One of our regular canine visitors gets an extra special mention. Thanks, Mortuary Gem!

This month we have our best ever show of a little known autumn bulb, Sternbergia lutea. They're growing in very shallow soil (about 2cm) on a grave top. This plant is native to the Mediterranean and needs a thorough drying out in summer, which very shallow soil provides. The dark green leaves sprout at flowering time and grow throughout autumn and winter, when there is usually moisture in the soil. They die down in spring. Although they look very like crocuses, they are more closely related to Narcissi. #wowee!

Went for Obscura Day 2016! It was a beautiful park, and the volunteer that led the tour was funny, approachable, and full of weird fun facts about all the plants that grow there. It's a beautiful park that feels secluded even though it's right in east London

A very interesting tour thanks to sheldon and sam.i have lived in london all my life and did not know this place existed until a few months ago. Would like to revisit spring /summer.

A fairly peaceful haven of woods, ponds and wild flowers with good paths. Even in late September there are some wild flowers there, lots of cyclamen and a few, scabious, mallow, mullein, white and red campion, cuckhold's pintles seed heads and various daisies, mints and umbelliferae. It's a right nice place for a stroll or just to sit with a sandwich and a flask of tea to hear the birds singing, away from some of the traffic noise and pollution. A little gem of a place.

User

A beautiful place it's hard to believe that your in the middle of mile end I wish I had had more time to explore the graves such a calming place to be
