We are delighted to announce Andrew Smith has been promoted to Professor in Oral Health Sciences.
Andrew’s research looks at the innate immune response within healthy and diseased tissue. He has ongoing collaborative projects investigating the role the innate immune system plays in Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, orofacial granulomatosis, lichen planus, mucosal inflammation and the oral microbiome.

... We have also uploaded videos demonstrating the clinical stages of manufacturing a mouth guard, including the fitting – one of the skills MSc students will practise during their contact days at the Institute.

Congratulations to Dr. Yago Leira who received the best original paper award during the Research Forum at the 19th International Congress of the Italian Society of Periodontology in Rimini.
Dr. Yago Leira won for his article entitled “Periodontal inflammation is associated with increased serum levels of CGRP in patients with chronic migraine”. This research was carried out in collaboration with the Headache Unit from the University Clinical Hospital of Santiago de Compostela led by Dr. Rogelio Leira and the Periodontology Unit from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Head: Prof. Juan Blanco).

Many congratulations to Professor Joanna Zakrzewsk, Honorary Consultant in Facial Pain in UCLH Eastman Dental Hospital, who recently gave the 2019 Charles Tomes Lecture at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Professor Zakrzewska is also celebrating the receipt of two grants from the Rosetree Trust and the Trigeminal Neuralgia Association UK to undertake new research studies into this complex and sometimes disabling orofacial disorder.
Yesterday, we were delighted to be joined by renowned cosmetic dentist Dr Bill Dorfman who gave a very inspirational lecture to our Aesthetic postgraduates.
