In time for the NHS's 70th birthday, we've reached a huge milestone in our development of our brand-new facility, the new home to the Royal National ENT and Eastman Dental hospitals. We've reached the top of the construction!
The final bit of cement has been placed by our Chief Executive Marcel Levi. We can't for the new clinical facility to open! #NHS70 #uclh

To mark #CDHAwarenessDay GIFT-Surg have released an animation to help explain the condition in association with CDH-UK. https://youtu.be/OZVL0Cgrexg
Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia, or CDH, is a condition that can occur when the diaphragm doesn’t form completely during the early stages of pregnancy. The diaphragm usually separates the stomach organs from the chest organs, but when CDH occurs the stomach organs can move into the chest. This can affect the growth of the baby’s lungs.
CDH UK is a charity which offers support, information and advice on the condition. Visit their website at: http://www.cdhuk.org.uk

Without exception, the team that worked with me in the preparation, operation and after care services for my cochlear implant delivered a service that the NHS can be proud of. A brilliant process. And I feel totally reassured that I will continue to get that service in follow up appointments and can ask the team any time if I need anything from them. Medals all round.

User

We got referred here from Ipswich while I was 28weeks pregnant the care we received was outstanding our little girl made it to 35 weeks before needing to be delivered thanks to uclh and the fm team

This hospital and the staff of t11 north have been amazing and so supportive best hospital ive ever had to deal with xx

User

The staff at this hospital are the best NHS staff I have ever been treated by. Not only are they kind and empathetic but they are also incredibly knowledgable and very focused and hard working. I was admitted to the hospital alone and afraid and my illness was taken seriously and the staff on hand were so sweet and kind to me. The Dr's showed a level of genuine concern I have never seen. The hospital ward I was on EGA was immaculate and clean and the staff were very good at following hygiene protocol. Always washing their hands and even hiding needles as they passed from one patient to another presumably to prevent the other patients from being unnerved. They treated me like a family member and I felt I was in the best hands. Fantastic hospital.

User

The care here has been fantastic, such a hard working team from top surgeons to the cleaning staff and coffee makers, all having an important part to play. I’ve just had a complementary Chinese acupuncture hands on therapy on my neck and shoulders, absolutely fantastic!

Well done and thank you uclh for looking after me for the last 9 days!

User

My mum is with you at the moment for a specialist operation. The care and expertise from start has been absolutely exceptional. Special mention to dr McDonald who operated on her and rob the anaesthetist with the Lego cufflink - I couldn’t be more thankful to you both for putting my mum at ease before the op, she was terrified. She is in PACU and the nurses and doctors and staff have been just so wonderful, I cannot be any more grateful or complimentary. The attitude of all the staff from top to bottom seems to be different from other places, always have a smile, nothing is too much bother, just caring people. You all deserve a fat pay rise and extra holiday! Thank you so much xx

User

I just want to say how wonderful the care was here for my sadly passed Grandad in Critical care unit this passed few days. All staff treated him with such dignity and compassion along with us as the family. UCLH should be very proud of their staff on this unit especially those working today I send my love and thanks to you x

User

I have just been discharged from my first total hip replacement at 28 years old. I cannot rate this hospital enough. It was the best care I have EVER received and I was actually sad to go home because I had got to know everyone. Ward T10 - outstanding care.

User

I have been out of UCLH hospital for just over a week, after being in their maternity care for 4 weeks. I actually miss the people that have taken care of us. I feel like I have made such connections with the staff at UCLH because they are all so incredibly kind and caring!! I am so grateful for the people there and the skills combined with the true way of caring!! Thank-you so very much!!!!

User

Huge thank you from me after having to bring my neighbour during a mental health episode everyone of you was fantastic 11 hours we spent up there each and everyone of you down from DR chris to the security who kept reassuring my neighbour your a huge credit to the nhs and thank you for all your hard work yesterday

User

Hie all: I was an inpatient in the hospitals mental health ward for a month. In that time the hospital staff were fantastic, doing their very best to support me through that difficult period in my life It was a life changing experience for me. It helped to build my shattered confidence in people and a trust I had never had before sprang up. The ward itself was clean tidy and well maintained. The staff went well and beyond their call of duty to help me get better.

I’ll end off by saying that a lot of people who are so in need of help and are struggling without most people even realising it. So my message to everyone is that if you see or know anyone and you notice that they’re in distress or may be struggling, approach them, tell them you care, tell them you’re here for them all the way, they may be scared to tell you or they may not be able to communicate it to you. At that point seek advice but don’t leave them on their own. Hold onto those friends or people because at that point they need you the most. If necessary you must be firm and take them to hospital to keep them safe and alive. Never feel like it’s only on your hands because nobody can take that responsibility.

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share something that has happened to me over the last week. We are all quick to moan about the NHS but I have had an experience that has blown me away. Last week I had a referral appointment with Prof Mundy who is a urologist based at University College Hospital London Westmoreland Street. At the appointment I updated him as to my current position with my Artificial Urinary Sphincter and the trials and tribulations that I had been going through over the last couple of months. His immediate focus was drawn to the fact that there may have been cuff erosion and he was concerned that the pain, swelling and discomfort I was having may be signs of this and he was extremely concerned as I could not self catheterise either and I had had a supra pubic catheter put in earlier in the week at Southampton as I had gone into retention.

Within ten minutes of him assessing me he had arranged for me to be admitted the following day for a urgent cystoscopy and investigation with the possibility of the removal of the Artificial Urinary Sphinctre under general anaesthetic.

I was sent straight to pre-op assessment and bloods and other tests were done straight away. Before leaving the clinic I was ready to go, however I was advised that he could not fit me into the following days theatre list, however they had got me onto the morning list on Thursday. As I live in Hampshire they organised for me to return the following day and arranged overnight accommodation so that I could be admitted at 7.00am and I was first on the list. I was taken into theatre at 8.30am and thankfully there was no cuff erosion, however I had a stricture in my urethra which they sorted out for me straight away.

I suppose what I am trying to say is that I have never been treated with the respect and concern that I have had from the team at the hospital. All the way through I was well informed and made to feel important. All the members of the nursing team and everyone I had contact with during this episode were sincere and could not do enough to make sure I was ok. I was dreading the whole scenario as I have had loads of bad experiences in the past at other hospitals.

All the staff, and I mean ALL the staff from the receptionist to the canteen staff to the nursing team at University College Hospital London are amazing, they work as a team and treat you with kindness and concern. They are a shinning light in the midst of the chaos of the NHS and other hospitals could take a page from their book and learn a thing or two about patient care, kindness and compassion.

Colorectal Surgery, Day Surgery Unit T2.

I often complaint about NHS, however the experience I had today made me realise that there is still a very good service out there. Not sure whether uclh is an exception but all I can say is that it's clean, staff (from reception up to surgeons) are really nice, caring and helpful. Great professionals with a genuine heart I would say. I was impressed with the excellent organization as well.

I honestly recommend it.

User

The hospital is great, staff nice, doctors good. But after my experience today on discharge they are lucky to get 1 star. The bed manager was an absolute disgrace. Foreign lady. I was on T13 Ward. I was having problems arranging my Hospital transport home to Liverpool after 10 hrs of chemo treatment. She came up to me and told me my bed had been assigned and I had to leave ! Disgusting. I told her my issues but she just went and got me some printouts for trains and buses back to Liverpool !! She wanted me to pay over £100 train fare, or be on a bus for nearly 7 hrs after all my chemo ! Absolutely disgusting. When I told her what I thought. She said then get a taxi ! Around £500 ! I was astonished. Even the nurses and Physio couldn’t believe her. They then moved all my clothes etc into a waiting area whilst they got bed ready for someone else. This bed manager needs to be sacked ASAP No idea how to treat patients, especially very ill ones. I will be reporting her and want this escalating to the highest authority. Absolutely disgraceful.

Right now I do not have much good to say, I live in CA USA and my mother has been and is currently receiving treatment at this hospital, I'm getting feedback from family and it's really frustrating, the lack of communication between nurses/doctors and family is infuriating, they have gone to visit to my elderly mother and found her covered in her own vomit and they have had to clean, re-dress and care for her, with the nurses then expressing irritation that my mother vomited. The latest is a proceedure gone wrong causing my mother to vomit up over a pint of blood from a proceedure that had been two months waiting period although deemed urgent!! It looks like I'm going to have to fly from the USA and hell hath no fury as a daughtet fighting for the rights, dignity and care of her mother..
