We continue supporting our students' mental health during the pandemic and remind you to keep your exercise routine going on, even if you are locked inside. Get creative and think what physical activity you can do inside your home, such as going up and down the stairs, using bean tins as weights, or what exercises you can do on your chair? Or how about following an example of Chinese man Pan Shancu, from the city of Hangzhou, who completed 6,250 laps of track (31 miles or 50km) consisting of two large table set up inside his apartment. The marathon runner said he “could not bear sitting down anymore”, as he and many other people across China had been confined to their homes for weeks. His time was 4:48:44!

Infectious disease outbreaks, such as Coronavirus (COVID-19), can be scary and UK Study Centre is committed to supporting the mental health of our students during the difficult times. There are many things you can and should do to manage your wellbeing. Today we remind to follow your usual routine as much as possible.
- Plan your day, it is easier when schools set your online routine, but please still do it during the Easter break. - Try to follow your ordinary routine as muc...h as possible, try to get up and go to bed at your usual time. - Set alarms to remind you of your new schedule. - You now have time for things you always wanted to do, for example, cooking or catching up on some TV episodes, think about what you can do by yourself at home. - For those students who have lived in a boarding school for some time it might feel a bit strange to live with parents again. Respect each other's privacy and give each other space, agree on a household routine and remember, it might be your last chance to spend a really long time with your parents while you are still a child, enjoy it! It might seem now that this unusual forced break will last forever, but it will be over before you know and you might miss that time together.
* Based on information provided by Mind UK, you can contact them from overseas via their online chat on www.mind.org.uk.

It is now more important than ever to be looked after by AEGIS guardians who can provide support at these challenging times. AEGIS shared a number of short stories from students overcoming the challenging situation posed by the coronavirus pandemic. One of our students, Nikita shares his story of the difficult time coping with the coronavirus outbreak and having to leave school due to its closure. He speaks of the great help and support that UKSC has given him.
“I am thinking... about the old days when I was looking at the school sights with fascinating views or when I was attending a variety of clubs and societies, some of them led by students. Now it all seems so old and forgotten. I hope my school will recover from these awful circumstances, in which all of the schools are trapped, as quick as possible. I’m so grateful to my amazing teachers that are still keen on continuing working and contributing to our lives. I just want to say thank you to them, to what they had already done, are doing every day and are going to do in the future to give us the best education possible. Also, a great thanks to my guardian who was with me all the time during this tough period of my life. I’m so happy that despite all the bad things that had happened, I can still enjoy the school’s top education and be at home with my family. Another thanks to everyone, thank you for all of your support.”

An English teacher has amassed thousands of followers worldwide after just 3 online lessons during the coronavirus pandemic. Holly King-Mand, a 36-year-old teacher from Bedfordshire, is providing her daily English Live sessions on Facebook. In the beginning, Holly was ‘very proud’ of having just 74 followers last week but after stating the sessions on Monday she has now gained over 18,000. Holly believes that ‘I guess I just posted [details] in the right place at the right t...ime’. The teacher currently hosts a free 30-minute lesson every weekday, aimed at key stage 2 or 3 levels (ages 7-14). Covering topics from synonyms and spelling to Shakespeare, she provides task sheets for children and, because the lessons are live, her students interact with her and ask for ‘shout-outs’, which all come through on her phone. Holly decided to leave her middle school job after her recent maternity leave until the spread of coronavirus has fallen and schools are open again.

International Baccalaureate (IB) exams officially cancelled.
It has been officially confirmed that International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations that were to take place in May 2020 have been cancelled. The decision was made following the closure of schools around the world and the inability to conduct the exams between the period of April 30 and May 22. The IB programme is the equivalent of the British A-level exams, offered by international schools in 156 countries and sat b...y 200,000 students annually. Despite the cancellation of the physical exams, students will be assessed on the basis of all other programme components, including oral tests, essays and coursework, which make up to 50% of the course, and on which the students have worked throughout the academic year. The deadlines for submitting the coursework have been extended, and presently IB is preparing a detailed instruction for schools on conducting oral exams and TOK presentations online. School teachers will have to evaluate and agree on all possible components of the course remotely and set all student grades by June 1.

According to the most recent news published by the UK government with regard to the recent cancellation of GCSE and A-level exams the following decisions have been made.
It has been confirmed that the exam boards will be asking teachers to submit judgments about the grades they think their students would have received if exams had gone ahead. Teachers will have to take into account "a range of evidence and data", such as mock exam results and other school work. This will be c...ombined with information from "other relevant data", such as pupils' previous attainment, to calculate their grades. The aim is to provide these calculated grades to students before the end of July. Meanwhile, university representatives have confirmed that they expect universities to be flexible and do all they can to support students and ensure they can progress to higher education.

A maths teacher from London, whose free online learning platform is seeing over a half a million hits a day as schools close worldwide due to coronavirus, has been shortlisted to win the title of ‘world’s best teacher’.
A 33-year-old DrJamie Frost who holds a PhD in Computer Science from Oxford University and was previously an investment banker, now spends over 90 hours a week managing his website www.DrFrostMaths.com , whilst holding down a full-time job at Tiffin School, a ...boys’ grammar in Kingston. His free website, which earned him the nomination for the sixth Varkey Foundation $1 million Global Teacher Prize, gives students a chance to take part in interactive online quizzes, as well as it offers teaching slides, videos, exam sample questions with answers and teaching resources. According to Mr. Frost the website has nearly seven million downloads and is used by 5500 schools worldwide. Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the website has seen more than 100,000 additional visits per day and continues to rise further. Dr Frost has added that it is remarkable how even with all schools being close we are able to cope using technology.
The Global Teacher Prize will be awarded at the Natural History Museum on October 12. The shortlist is compiled from over 40,000 entries worldwide by a panel of international education experts. The winning educator is allowed to put their $1m, awarded in equal instalments over 10 years, towards new projects and initiatives of their choosing. The teacher highlights that for him to win the prize would not be about the recognition. ‘If I was to win the money I would spend it all on expanding the platform more globally’.

Coronavirus: Answers promised after school shutdown confusion.
Following the recent announcement by the UK government of all school shutdown in the country, BBC reports that the UK government has promised to give more details on how school closures will affect students and parents after criticism over a lack of clarity.
A list of the "key workers" during the coronavirus crisis - whose children can still go to school - will be released later today (on the 19th of March), the e...ducation secretary said. The UKSC is following the most recent news on the situation with the Coronavirus outbreak, and we will continue keeping our readers informed as soon as more information becomes available.
Meanwhile, the PM of the UK Boris Johnson has also noted that more details would be given on Friday on how pupils would be awarded grades in the absence of exams. It comes after GCSEs and A-Levels in England and Wales were cancelled.
The government has also stressed that school students studying in their final year should not lose the chance to go to university this year because of the circumstances.

With the recent announcements by some of the UK universities cancelling face-to-face lessons, as well as with some schools closing in the outbreak of Coronavirus in the country, the UK Study Centre is kindly reminding our students that we are here to offer them full academic support through private tuition. Our highly qualified and experienced tutors will help all students to catch up on the missed school material and effectively prepare for their examinations at the end of t...he academic year.
The universities including Durham University, The London School of Economics, Loughborough University and Manchester Metropolitan University have officially confirmed that they have now temporary cancelled face-to-face classes, with some extending the cancellation till the end of the academic year. The UKSC takes great care of our students and is keen to inform everyone that the majority of our private tuition lessons takes place online. We are conscious that the students might be concerned about tutors coming to their homes in the midst of the global pandemic, and therefore would like to flag the option of taking online lessons. Please, contact us to arrange private online lessons with some of the best private tutors in the UK.

A new study commissioned by the Department for Education and completed by the Institute of Fiscal Studies has found that 80% of students are better off financially throughout their working lives after studying at university and investing in their education. Both women and men who studied the subjects of Medicine, Pharmacology, Law, Economics and Business were found to benefit financially the most after graduating, whilst those who studied Creative Arts, Languages and Philosop...hy, on average, received lower financial returns. All gains and losses were counted after the cost of going to university was deducted (including tuition fees, loans for living costs, interest charged on loans, as well as other potential earnings from studying at the university rather than being in jobs). The research also found that given that more women study at university than men - a higher proportion of women, 85%, compared with 75% of men, receive a positive financial return.

University admissions could scrap use of predicted grades!
BBC reports that the Office for Students has outlined an entry system which would scrap the use of predicted A-level grades. Instead, applications would be delayed until students had their exam results.
According to Sir Michal Barber, chairman of the watchdog, there was ‘widespread recognition’ that parts of the admissions systems were ‘not working’. The watchdog has pointed out that in 75% of cases, students did not... make the grades predicted by schools.
There has been concern about a lack of transparency over how ‘contextual’ offers operate, where a disadvantaged candidate might be offered a place with lower grades. In addition, the watchdog has stressed that there has been discrepancy between the required grades advertised by universities and often much lower grades which were really needed to get places. There have also been warnings that ‘personal statements’ – where students write about their own interests in a course- can be skewed towards those who get the most help from parents or teachers.
The watchdog has proposed 3 options for reform: -Universities would not make offers until pupils had received their A-level results. Yet applications could be made in advance, as at present. -Applications would not be made until students had their A-level results. Students could have visited universities and registered an interest, but would not make a final choice on applying until they knew their exam grades. -Keep the current timetable broadly unchanged, but take more account of disadvantages facing some students, reconsider the use of personal statements and have more transparency over required grades.
It is also important to highlight that delaying applications or offers until exam results are unknown would mean changing the current timetable - either taking A-levels or publishing results earlier or starting the university term later.
The watchdog will publish its findings after the admissions review ends in May, but universities are independent bodies, and changes to admissions can be imposed on them.
