Less than a month before approaching MSLS and we are proud to announce our next speaker - Fahmi Reza! He is a political graphic designer, street artist and documentary filmmaker and will be joining us as one of the panellists in Session 2: Student Activism - Revisiting the Society’s Catalyst of Change, discussing the power of youth in pursuing the betterment of our country and the rights of our people. ( You can find the full video of his 2-hour lecture on student activism he...re https://youtu.be/S-abHWls-p4 )
Fahmi Reza has taught himself many things: Being an amateur historian, human rights activist and documentary film-maker. However, he is perhaps most known for his instantly recognisable political posters. Having studied electrical engineering, Fahmi is a self-taught graphic designer who took the plunge into the discipline in 2002 to help struggling civil societies who could not afford “real” graphic designers, with pro bono works. He now creates posters by himself for every cause that he believes in. Some of you may have probably seen a couple of them, with their distinctive raw and do-it-yourself aesthetics influenced by the punk music scene.
Due to the fact that social movements are not won overnight, he believes that there is an urgent need to continue the process of raising awareness, getting organised, mobilising citizens, taking action, building networks, creating alternatives, and a lot more. He also believes that we need to nurture more activists and develop more ‘rebels’ to fight for change in this country. He hopes to see more artists and designers getting involved in the struggle, with the courage to stand up against injustice, to speak out against corruption and to use their art as weapons for change.
Interested to hear his ideas? Visit our website at www.ukeconline.com/msls-xii/ to register now! The details of the event are as follows:
Date: 11th August 2018 Time: 8.30am - 5.30pm Venue: Intercontinental Kuala Lumpur Dress code: Business Formal

As a believer that even small contributions matter, Steven Gan is making his contributions through journalism. Steven Gan, 55, began his journalism career in Hong Kong after graduating from an Australian university 25 years ago. Gan returned to Malaysia in 1994 and worked as special issues editor in The Sun daily where he helped break a story on the deaths of 59 inmates in an immigration detention camp.
In 1996, Gan was arrested at the Asia Pacific Conference on East Timor (A...pcet II) in Kuala Lumpur when a pro-government mob sought to forcibly stop the meeting. He was adopted by Amnesty International as a prisoner of conscience. Gan returned to Malaysia again in 1999 to launch the country's first and only independent media, Malaysiakini (Malaysia Now). Since it went live, Malaysiakini has become one of the most influential websites in the country.
Malaysiakini was raided by the police and 19 of its computers confiscated in 2003. Nevertheless, the harassment from the government failed to stop the subscription-based website from continuing to provide its readers with ‘news and views that matter’.
The online website was ranked 18 on Asiaweek’s Power 50 in 2001, and Gan was also selected as one of the 50 most influential individuals in Business Week’s ‘Stars of Asia’. In 2003, he was among seven Malaysians picked by Asia Inc’s ‘Who’s hot in Asia?’
Having a strong belief in media freedom, Gan will be delivering his speech with the topic “Journalism As An Agent For Change” with hope that this will inspire the younger generation who intend to pursue journalism as a career. Be sure to register by clicking RSVP on our website https://www.ukeconline.com/event/impact-s tories-2018/. We hope to see you there!

With this year’s Malaysian Student Leaders’ Summit (MSLS) approaching, let us reminisce on last year’s MSLS with its theme, “Fast Forward: What’s Next?” regarded as a triumph with more than 250 students attending the summit. The students came from all over Malaysia to share their experiences, learning and stimulating ideas among student leaders and thus inspiring one another.
Various areas of topics were covered ranging from education and brain drain, political awareness an...d digital economies. A healthy debate between Mr. Syed Saddiq and Mr. Shahril Hamdan on which party had a better economic agenda before the historical general election also took place at the time. The topics discussed during the Summit aimed to encourage student leaders as a whole to engage in conversations focused on the youth’s impact on the nation.
Interested to know about this year’s Summit in August? What are you waiting for then? Register now at www.ukeconline.com/msls-xii/ and don’t forget to follow our Facebook page for new updates.
We hope to see you there!

For our second session of MSLS XII, the topic of discussion will be none other than Student Activism!
This session intends to remind us the importance of our role as students, and our underlying role of activists in pursuing the betterment of our country and the rights of our people.
In such endeavours, we are in need of unity and a shared vision more than anything else. We hope the topics being discussed during this year’s MSLS brings us closer to the Ripple Effect we are... all so greatly in need of and so greatly capable of bringing to fruition.
Attendees can also expect to be exposed to differing views concerning a number of current issues. We hope these differences will bring to us an appreciation of the common cause we have to fight for and also desire for good we share as Malaysians.

*Drumrolls* Announcing our first session for MSLS XII - “The Malaysian Dilemma: The Future of Race-Based Politics”!
In light of the recent election results, there has been a lot of questions in regards to the future of race-based politics. Is race-based politics an inherent nature of multicultural societies such as Malaysia? Or will Malaysians one day move on from such communal politics?
Undeniably, the future of this topic must be discussed for the harmonious governance of M...alaysia. Through historical and socio-political perspectives, we hope to collectively discuss this topic through an objective assessment with leaders from UMNO, Bersatu and DAP, in order to truly identify our divisions and reconcile them.
Come and join us in this compelling panel session to understand the future of race-based politics and how this affects the Malaysian governance in the future.

As we observe Syawal, we would like to offer our prayers in memory of Mr Nazrin Hassan, the group CEO of Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd. Mr Nazrin was a key member during the founding years of UKEC as the Vice Chairman. While he played a vital role in nurturing the startup ecosystem in Malaysia, he also made his time to mentor the UKEC members as an alumnus.
Earlier this year, we had the opportunity to interview Mr Nazrin on his UKEC experience. He taught us to think beyond our personal ambitions, have an agenda that goes beyond politics and be the glue that holds Malaysians of different backgrounds together.
To mourn his death is to celebrate his life. Thank you Mr Nazrin, you will always be remembered.
