About Vets4Pets Hendon
Dr Pavel Martin, a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), heads his growing team to provide top-quality, modern and reasonably priced care to members of our community. He has a special interest in orthopaedic surgery. He also has an advanced degree in Pharmacology.
His 9-person team includes Dr Karen Richardson, MRCVS, a graduate of the Royal Veterinary College in London, who has special interests in internal medicine and diagnostics.
Our two registered vet nurses, Tracy and Amelia, who also qualified in London, support the vets in all aspects of medicine and surgery, and manage their own clients for flea-and-worming, weight clinics, nail clips and medical grooming. Both are qualified clinical coaches for nursing students, as we are an RCVS-approved veterinary-nurse training practice.
At the front desk, you might meet our practice manager Michelle, who keeps everything in the front and back of the clinic ticking over 7 days a week, and our receptionist Natalie.

Once upon a time (last week), a puppy named Koda chewed a choo-choo. šš In fact, he chewed and chewed as hard as he could, but the little toy train in the puppy's mouth choo-chooed straight into his belly.
Luckily for this 12-week-old Labrador puppy, our story has a happy ending.
It all kicked off when Koda's owners' four-year-old niece offered him her favourite toy, a rubbery Thomas the Tank Engine. She tossed it, he caught it. Instant best friends!
... Once swallowed, Thomas the Tank Engine -- measuring 3 cm x 5 cm -- wasn't able to squeeze through Koda's puppy-sized pyloric sphincter into his small intestine, where the toy could do serious damage. Instead, Thomas stayed in Koda's stomach, rumbling around while Koda continued to eat and drink like a drunken sailor.
Only the next morning did his owners notice Koda was starting to whimper and cry when they picked him up.
When he presented to us, he was all wagging tail, wet nose and perky ears. He'd even eaten a good breakfast. But when we palpated his abdomen, he turned into a bit of a small bad wolf, growling and snapping.
Since he'd eaten, we delayed his anaesthetic by several hours to prevent him from aspirating (breathing in) any vomit while unconscious. We then X-rayed him and saw an odd shape in his stomach (see below).
Dr Martin wasted no time in performing a gastrotomy, or stomach surgery. Within seconds of opening, he found Thomas, peaking out of the puppy's stomach with a mischievous smile on his face.
Koda came in for his post-op checkup today. Heās back to his old self and his abdominal incision is healing beautifully. We recommend he wears a basket muzzle when he's at home and in the garden until he learns not to take non-food objects in his mouth. Some dogs should always wear them for their own safety.
Here's to Koda and his devoted owners living happily ever after! ā¤ļøšš

OLLIE UPDATE: First, THANK YOU šš¼šš¼šš¼ to the overwhelming response from our followers far and wide to our call for a permanent home for Ollie. Weāre only sorry we werenāt able to reply to each of you as we were waiting to see whether an initial ātrial residencyā with a family would be successful. Weāre delighted to report now that Ollie passed with flying colours and finally has a forever home. He managed to charm the familyās two incumbent housecats and every human member ...of the household. He now enjoys sofa-surfing in the sun and sniffing flowers in an escape-proof garden, where the conscientious owners have installed a custom fence-roller system designed to keep cats safe. This security feature is ideal for Ollie, who came to us in February as a stray kitten with two broken front legs after a suspected road-traffic accident. We welcomed him back this week with lots of cuddles when he came in for his second vaccinations. He stormed around the practice again like he owned the place! We all miss him but are thrilled heāll live out the rest of his kitty life in a safe and loving home. Here he is in his new digs:

Bittersweet Friday: Today our team bade farewell to Natalie, our receptionist, whose smile and smarts brightened our practice every Friday, Saturday and Sunday for over two years. When she wasnāt answering our phones, chatting with our clients and even pitching in with emergencies out back, she was busy studying full-time to become a human nurse. Sheās due to graduate this summer, and rumour has it sheās going to finish with top honours. Please join us in wishing this classy young woman the best of luck as she follows in the footsteps of Florence Nightingale in her noble career. We will miss you so much Natalie!
Ollie is ready to go HOME! Our beloved practice cat, who has lived with us for the past two months, needs a REAL home now. Heās fully recovered from his bilateral fracture repair, and has spent a few long weekends at Dr Richardsonās house, happily playing with her sweet old dog and unhappily hiding from her angry old cat. Unfortunately, none of us in the practice are able to provide this nine-month-old kitty the life-long love and security he deserves. Ollie was brought to u...s by one of our clients who found this stray kitten lying motionless near her house. Dr Martin X-rayed him to find two dramatic fractures in his forelimbs, which he repaired to save his life; he could not have survived with two broken legs or two amputations. Ollie adores people and dogs of all ages, thanks to all the playtime he spends with our practice manager Michelleās border-collie puppy (below) and his weekends with Dr Richardsonās 14-year-old lurcher. Heās loving, gentle and playful, as well as neutered and litterbox-trained. Due to his accident, he is wisely fearful of traffic noises and should ideally be kept indoors or in a fully enclosed garden. Could he become your new four-legged companion? Send us a private message if youāre interested or call us at Vets4Pets Hendon if youāre serious and would like to arrange to meet him: 020 8201 4910ā¬

Ever wonder what happens when you leave your pets with us for neutering? Aside from the surgery, they get loads of attention from our nursing team! Hereās Pixie, a 7-year-old Pomeranian, who came in yesterday for her spay. Amanda, our final-year nursing student, carried this 1.8 kg bundle of fluff around the practice while Pixie recovered from the sterilisation procedure. Veterinary nursing is a demanding profession but affection for animals comes easily. š¶š°š¹š±ā¤ļø
Alfie, a 6-year-old Victorian Old Tyme Bulldog, took a crucial first step yesterday towards managing brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). See his pics immediately before and after his surgery, called rhinoplasty. Like other short-nosed dogs with severely stenotic nostrils, Alfie is a high-risk candidate for BOAS. Let us know if youāre concerned about your dog. Lots of changes at Vets4Pets Hendon! Introducing Dr Shweta Nakrani, our new full-time veterinary surgeon, who joined our team last month. Dr Nakrani rounds out our three-vet team, led by Dr Martin, bringing more than six years of private-practice experience in the U.K. since qualifying from University of Liverpoolās Institute of Veterinary Science. This overachiever also attained an undergrad degree from Londonās Royal Veterinary College (Dr Richardsonās alma mater). Here she is with our practice cat, Ollie, who loves Dr Nakrani and her hair. Welcome to the team, Shweta!
OLLIE UPDATE: Oliver Pete, the stray kitten, is still with us in the practice after Dr Martin repaired both of his broken front legs last month. Heās growing up fast, gaining strength and becoming bolder every day. Dr Martin removed one of his pins on Friday to make him more comfortable after his leg healed, and today he claimed every high table as his own.
