There’s a problem with the ethical fashion industry that no one is talking about. Most people aren’t making money. I know, I know, we’re not suppose to talk about money (it feels really awkward actually!). But everyone needs to make a living. And for an industry that touts its values that everyone deserves to be paid fairly... no one really is. Have you noticed all the independent brands closing lately? If you’re a maker, have you noticed local factories closing?... Ethical factories aren’t making enough money because the brands that market fair wages are actually haggling for lower production prices. How can the factories give lower prices that are still *fair* to their workers and themselves when the overhead cost of running an ethical factory is so high? Brands are asking for lower production prices because customers want more accessible product prices, free shipping and free returns as dictated by e-commerce giants like Amazon, (and even Aritzia, Madewell, Everlane, etc.). Most of the independent ethical brands I know aren’t profitable and/or the owners don’t pay themselves a living wage (or at all). And when brands aren’t making money, they can’t afford to invest in influencer marketing, partnerships, blog posts, etc. So ethical fashion influencers and bloggers aren’t getting the support they require to thrive in this industry. In the end, factories aren’t profitable, brands aren’t profitable, influencers aren’t profitable, and customers are disappointed because ethical fashion isn’t as easy as regular shopping. We’re trained to collect things, and we can collect more when we seek the best price, hunt for sales, and pull the trigger for free next day shipping. I think ethical fashion will always be elitist in a lot of ways because when we start lowering the price of ethical garments, they truly aren’t ethical anymore. Because someone along the way isn’t getting paid fairly. I think we all really want ethical fashion to thrive in this world; no on wants to see brands and factories closing up shop. I don’t know what the solution actually is, but I think talking about it is the first step! #transparency #ethicalfashion
