A new exercise for you to try in 2019...
Half-kneeling single-arm landmine press:
A great push exercise that will work your shoulders through a full range of movement in a neutral position that poses limited risk to the shoulder joint. The asymmetrical set-up also means that your core stability will be tested and, by keeping your glutes tight throughout, you get the added benefit of a static hip flexor stretch.

37 weeks pregnant: still squatting!
Some people worry about squatting when pregnant but there are huge benefits in keeping squats in your training throughout the trimesters...
Firstly, the movement strengthens your core, legs, glutes and back which are all essential muscle groups for maintaining good posture throughout pregnancy as your body position shifts.
... Additionally, squats help the pelvis to spread which is crucial for labour, and any help with that shouldn’t be overlooked!
Finally, deep squats throughout pregnancy can help to move the baby into the correct, head-down position, and at later stages will encourage the baby to engage deeper into the pelvis to prepare for labour!
Always listen to your body and seek professional guidance if you’re not sure of correct form (that applies to whether you’re pregnant or not!).

Today was the first workout from my new prenatal training programme which I’ll continue to follow until the end of my pregnancy (6 weeks to go!).
I’ve dropped down to a two-day, full-body split; working around 10 reps per exercise with 60 seconds rest between each.
This would also work well as a fat-loss programme for the non-pregnant amongst you. In that case, reduce the rest periods down to 45 seconds and perhaps add in some abs and a conditioning exercise for a D series, e.g.; D1 Leg raise x15; D2 Overhead slam-balls x15.

Diastasis recti (the separation of the abdominal wall) affects up to two thirds of women during pregnancy so is something that many, if not all, mums-to-be worry about as the weeks progress.
One contributing risk factor is a weak TVA (Transverse Abdominus), which is the deepest core muscle responsible for stabilising the pelvis and lower back and holding everything in place. If the TVA is weak it can struggle to support the increasing pressure from the growing tummy, resultin...g in the separation.
Planks are one very simple exercise that help to isolate and strengthen the TVA and are suitable for most women through at least the first two trimesters of pregnancy.
To safely perform the plank you must ensure you maintain a neutral spine and neck with core muscles engaged, pelvis pulled in towards your belly and glutes squeezed tight. There should never be any dip in your lower back. Start with your forearms on the floor, but as you become stronger you can elevate your body, as shown here on a Swiss ball.
PLEASE NOTE: If your abs have already split then the plank is no longer a safe exercise to carry out since the increased pressure from this position can deepen the separation. Throughout later stages of pregnancy, when your tummy has grown quite large, it may also be unsuitable due to the large internal pressure.
Please always get professional guidance if you are looking to exercise during pregnancy.

Posterior chain training is important for everyone, but perhaps even more so for women during pregnancy since you need strength in your glutes and lower back to help support your growing bump and changing centre of gravity.
My current programme includes deadlifts and 45 degree back extension, shown here. Now at 25 weeks pregnant, I’ve had to take a slightly wider stance than normal on the deadlift to accommodate my growing tummy and I’m working around 12 reps per exercise to ensure the intensity isn’t too much (lower reps = higher intensity).
Weight training is SO beneficial during pregnancy but it is always worth getting professional guidance to ensure you’re not putting yourself or your baby at risk!

Women’s weight training is, thankfully, on the rise with more and more women waking up to the fact that to achieve the toned look they want, they need to start training more like men. Jane Fonda style workouts of high reps of light weights or endless hours on the treadmill will make you sweaty but will never help you build the tight, lean muscle and burn the excess fat that creates a sculpted figure.
Knowing where to start is often the biggest obstacle to taking that first st...

Training at 5 months’ pregnant.
I’ve been asked a lot how my training has changed since becoming pregnant. In some ways, not much at all...
I still weight train three times a week; I still squat, deadlift, bench-press, etc. and I still superset my exercises: yesterday’s session began with squats, superset with pronated-grip bent over row.
... What has changed is the intensity of the workouts: my weights are currently around 60% what they were pre-pregnancy; I’m taking longer rest periods between sets and I’m no longer doing lower-rep strength training. Most importantly, I’ve cut out any exercise that doesn’t feel comfortable (goodbye lying hamstring curl & leg raises!) and I’m listening to my body.
I’m sure as time progresses I’ll have to adapt my workouts more but since weight training is considered so beneficial for both pregnant women and their unborn babies, my hope is to continue all the way through to birth!

It was a busy weekend, what with working at The Fitting Rooms and then being chased around Cambridge by a car, so I didn't have time for any food prep unfortunately.
Rather than run to Pret or Itsu and buy an overpriced and unbalanced meal, I opted for a few separate food items to put this tasty meal together: 1/2 pack of ready cooked lentils from Sainsburys; 1 pot of edamame & bean salad from M&S and 1/2 pack of sliced roast chicken, also from M&S.
This serving cost just £4....10 and contains 378kcal, 32g carbs, 7g fat, 39g protein and 9g sugar.
Obviously you can't beat home-prepared meals, but if you have to buy on the high street, there are always better choices you can make than a sandwich & packet of crisps!

Yesterday a small group of runners from The Fitting Rooms Personal Training Gym travelled to Cambridge to take part in the Wings for Life World Run, raising money for spinal cord injury research.
The race is unlike any other... 130,000 runners, in 111 locations, across 58 countries all start running at exactly the same time. There's no finish line, just a 'Catcher Car' that sets off 30 minutes after you do. Once the car has caught you, your race is over so the distance you r...un is completely down to you!
Between the 6 of us we achieved a respectable distance of 86km, and I reached just over 16km personally which I was very happy with. The global male winner was Aron Anderson in Dubai who achieved a distance of 92km and the female winner, Dominika Stelmach in Santiago reached 68km, so a huge congratulations to them. What an impressive feat!
This really was a fun and exhilarating day out for a great cause and I'm already looking forward to the event next year. I hope even more of you can join us then!
