All trauma we experience in the past, all the pain and hurt that we were not able to process at the time, especially during our childhood, is stored in the body, as cellular memory. Through Yoga and conscious movement we can start to reveal and release this trauma, which in turn will allow us to expand our own consciousness and awareness of ourselves, allowing us to become more integrated, happier and healthy. This in turn allows to better deal with stress in the future and grow and expand into our natural state of joy and happiness.

What a little gem! I have tried various treatments and therapies around the world over the years - in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc. but Ayurvedic treatment is in a league of its own, in my opinion. People are going to India after chemotherapy and radiation to restore their immune systems; it is unique and highly effective. Dr Daisy Kuchinad, the founder of Ahimsa, knows only too well as her own beloved son had Cancer aged only 20. A physician based in the US, she researched the planet to find someone to help her son and found Dr Nair. He is a top Ayurvedic doctor based in Kerala. There is something very special about this man; his intuition is incredible - like he truly has a sixth sense. He treats patients with panchakarma, Ayurveda's premier mind-body healing treatment; a unique programme of deep cleansing, purification rejuvenation to detoxify the mind and body, strengthen the immune system and restore balance. I genuinely feel different after a week of treatment - plus the added bonus of looking younger with less cellulite! Dr Kuchinad has set up a lovely, homely villa with beautiful tropical gardens in which she is conserving rare Ayurvedic plants and the most incredible yoga studios with wooden floors restored from ancient temples, set at tree level amidst the Indian jungle. In accordance with panchakarma, the wonderful staff serve delicious, organic, mainly home-grown, Ayurvedic, vegetarian food to cleanse the body for the duration of your stay. There is time to relax and recharge and time to experience the amazing Indian culture with a boat trip on the stunning backwaters, live traditional Indian music and dance, a visit to a Hindu temple and an Indian yoga and martial arts' show. This has been a trip of a lifetime! It is life changing! I truly feel that Ayurveda is a lifestyle to be as healthy as possible in a non- aggressive way, one that I intend to continue to follow. I now feel that annual Ayurvedic treatments are key for today's busy life in the West. I think I would have burned out and become seriously ill if I had not taken the time to heal myself and it is an ongoing, lifelong healing process. The combination of East meeting West with a top conventional doctor and top Ayurvedic doctor means you are in the safest of hands with the best advice from both schools of thought. Ahimsa is not only an Ayurvedic retreat but also a yoga retreat, with a highly experienced, international yoga teacher flying in from the UK for the retreats, Anne-Marie Burford. At meal times, Dr Kuchinad leads inspiring discussions, putting the world to rights, including chats about Ayurveda, modern medicine, philosophy, yoga and praynama, to name a few. I have learned a lot; I feel enlightened, inspired and extreme positive! All this for a very reasonable price. I am so grateful and I shall be back!

Three years ago I was looking for a yoga class. My requirements were quite specific. I wanted a class with a spiritual philosophy, small enough for individual attention as I wanted to develop a personal practice, and with a teacher with experience in working with people with physical difficulties [I have had a mastectomy, a deltoid muscle removed and a hip replacement and did not want to cause any further damage!]. I found exactly what I was looking for with Anne Marie.

When I started classes it was as a total beginner. It was some years since I had exercised regularly, apart from walking, and I was extremely cautious and lacking in flexibility. I began with a sitting version of sun salutations and felt faint. However, I was in this for the long haul and began to practice every morning before breakfast. Very gradually, with Anne Marie’s encouragement and support, I could feel progress.

Nearly three years on, it is hard to remember that yoga has not always been part of my life. My daily practice continues and I find that limitations I thought I had don’t exist! Classes are invaluable now in helping me to develop my practice, they are challenging and thoroughly enjoyable. I wonder what I’ll be able to do in another three years.

Thank you Anne Marie and James, I cannot recommend you highly enough.

The Yorkshire Centre for Wellbeing is an idyllic place for people of any age, shape, size and ability to go and begin or expand their Yoga and Pilates journey. As a physiotherapist, I understand the importance of keeping your body in a good condition, but Anne-Marie and James go above and beyond to help each and every individual understand their body and find ways to improve their physical abilities. They take a holistic approach to their treatments and they have years of skills and experience which allow them to adapt their sessions to anyone. I would highly recommend their practice.

The Yorkshire Centre for Wellbeing is an excellent place for anyone wanting to learn more about yoga, meditation and the Ayurvedic lifestyle. Anne Marie, James and Chris are so kind and welcoming and the therapy treatments offered by Kelly-Anne are to die for!

The Ayurvedic retreat offers a fantastic mix of yoga, meditation, teachings and therapies. You are completely immersed in the Ayurvedic way of life. James and Anne-Marie are so knowledgeable and supportive and are very happy to spend time helping you in any way you need to ensure you gain the maximum benefit from your stay.

As for Kelly-Anne, I have had many different massages in my time, but the mixture of back massage, angelic reiki and crystal chakra cleansing treatment I had with Kelly-Anne was the best I had ever experienced! I can't wait to come back and have more!

Thank you to everyone at Yorkshire Centre for Wellbeing and to the wonderful people I met on the retreat. Hope to see you all again soon!.

The Yorkshire Centre for Wellbeing is a great, family run practice with a wealth of experience and knowledge behind them, allowing them to offer services to a wide range of people from many different backgrounds. As a sports therapist I would not hesitate to refer or recommend to my own client base, if they were in need of Anne-Marie and James' help - Tom @ TP Sports Therapy

May 2015 Retreat

From the initial warm welcoming smiles with the offer of delicious energy balls (hedgehogs!), it was a weekend full of knowledge, laughter, mind and body connection and a chance to learn how to really start loving myself.

The peaceful meditations, the ayurvedic seminar, the yoga practices, the massage, the food, the walking in the garden, the talking, the chill out time in the snug....the list goes on!

I can't thank you enough for giving all of this and more. With the tools you have equipped me with I have learnt how to give time to myself and how important it is to let things just 'be'.

Just returned from a wonderful New Years yoga retreat at Yorkshire Centre for Wellbeing and Harrogate Retreats. Anne-Marie and James structured and presented the retreat perfectly, knitting together the yoga, meditation, cooking, theory etc. They are experts in their field with a genuine passion to improve and nurture one's wellbeing.

Thank you for having me x

Just a few words on the recent retreat I attended in August run by James and Anne-Marie - if you are looking for positive energy, harmony and relaxation in your life through the practice of yoga and meditation combined with great company and wholesome food then get yourselves along to the next one! Both Anne-Marie and James’s coaching style is extremely supportive; they will enquire, listen, encourage, advise, reinforce and challenge depending on what is required. They have a passion for helping others which in turn energizes those around them. The retreat has made me more self-aware, provided me with the motivation to change old patterns and habits through ayurvedic methods and has given me the additional focus to embark on exciting challenges.

I’ve just returned from the Ahimsa Garden Retreat in Kerala. The trip was organised by the Yorkshire Centre for Wellbeing and we were accompanied by Anne-Marie Burford. It was an incredible experience and one that I’m looking forward to repeating next year. The retreat has two purpose built yoga studios and the views from both are breathtaking. It is almost impossible to explain the sensation of practising yoga whilst watching the sun rise above the lush green Keralan landscape, you must experience this for yourself to fully appreciate. Ayurvedic treatments are available and are carried out by an incredible team of practitioners. Treatments are bespoked to fit your specific requirements as prescribed by an Ayurvedic doctor. I cannot pretend to understand the full content of the treatments but I can say for me the results have been excellent, resulting in amongst other things, a more relaxed outlook, better sleep and greater energy levels. The food at the Ahimsa Garden Retreat was consistently of the highest standard. Thankfully the quantities available matched the quality. The bedrooms were spacious and of good standard. All rooms had access to ensuite facilities. The grounds were amazing with an incredible array of flowers, herbs, trees, fruit and vegetables all growing across the three acres. Additional activities included performances by local musicians and traditional dancers laid on at Ahimsa Gardens, both exceptional. The standout memory for me will have to be boating on the Keralan backwaters and watching the sun slowly set. The staff at Ahimsa Gardens made it feel like my home and for that I am grateful, their hospitality knew no bounds. Final word must be for Kerala and its people. Beautiful place, beautiful humble people who through both their gentleness and kindness have truly inspired me. I didn’t want to leave and can’t wait to return.

I started attending Pilates with James in March, with some trepidation! I have a long term weight problem, had suffered from stress and anxiety for many years, and struggled with arthritis in both knees. I was very anxious about going because I hadn't exercised for years, but was made to feel welcome by everyone I met. James is very patient and encouraging, and good at chasing up those missing from class!

After the first block of 10 sessions, which took me a lot longer than the planned 10 weeks to complete, I got used to coming to class, and took out a 3 month membership. Since then I have started yoga classes, and also enjoy the Power Plate, which builds muscle strength.

This bank holiday weekend I joined Ann-Marie, James and Chris at their home, along with Helen, our other teacher, and fellow retreaters, for my first Yoga Retreat. What a joy it was! Such a warm welcome: reassurance, individual attention and wonderful food. The yoga and meditation were good too! The classes catered for all levels of ability - from inexperienced (like me) to students who have been yogis for years.

We learnt about, and lived, as far as possible, an Ayurvedic life during the retreat, and the knowledge I gained has given me such insight into how I can continue to modify my lifestyle and eating habits to become healthier, happier and fitter without feeling I am being punished.

It is notable that having been prescribed a high dose of SSRI anti depressant/anti anxiety drugs for over 20 years, plus beta blockers and painkillers, I am now free of the pain killers and beta blockers, and have so far reduced the SSRI by half - I expect to be free of them in a couple of months. I've only been able to do this through accessing the classes and support.

I love yoga Nidra class with Anne Marie. It is an expertly led 90 minutes space to meditate, heal and be in a beautiful, serene, calm place. The visualisation takes you on a journey in the mind, while the yoga is gentle yet effective. I am recovering from cancer and can highly recommend this class to aid in the path to health in mind and body.

I have just completed the weekend Ayurvedic retreat. I was looking for something positive for the weekend and definitely found it. A very special combination of yoga , learning more about the Ayurvedic way of life and a superb aromatherapy massage. The centre is a very positive and peaceful space. As the CEO of a health charity I am keen to develop my understanding of ways to improve wellbeing and balance in our lives and I have learned a lot this weekend. Thank you to Anne Marie, James, Kelly Anne and my fellow students. Namaste

I have attended Anne-Marie's classes for over 25 years and have always enjoyed the exercises to we do each week. Since her beautiful studio opened several years ago I have enjoyed both Pilates and Power Pilates classes. As I have got older I have realised how beneficial it is to exercise regularly with a group of like minded people. It is a social occasion too and there are many of us who have been exercising together for a long time. Anne-Marie and her team are excellent experienced teachers.

I attended this Centre for the first time over the New Year for an Ayurvedic Yoga Retreat. As a clinical psychologist, I take self-care very seriously and this was the perfect start to 2016! Anne-Marie, James and Chris were welcoming and knowledgeable hosts, with extensive training in yoga, pilates, and Ayurvedic theory and practice. They were happy to share their learning and I came away with a number of tips and tricks to maintain health and wellbeing; some of which I hope to pass on, in turn, to my clients. The yoga studio itself is a wonderful and well-equipped space. What more can I say? I will be back!

User

I attended the Ayurveda weekend retreat in May. I’m a regular yogi and found James and Anne-Marie’s approach to yoga, meditation and lifestyle very inspiring. Kelly-Anne's therapies are fabulous. They make a wonderful team. I will be back!

User

Having just returned from a weekend at The Yorkshire Centre for Wellbeing I can't recommend the retreats here enough. Anne-Marie, James and Chris were so warm, welcoming and knowledgeable in yoga and meditation techniques and the Ayurvedic lifestyle in general. A fantastic start to the New Year; I learned so much more than I'd hoped, alongside a group of really lovely and interesting people. I shall definitely be back to learn more, either to another retreat in Harrogate or to experience the retreat in Kerala!
