Thank you to everyone that attended our client evening yesterday. It was great to have such a big turnout with excellent audience participation. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves.

User

Couldn’t ask for a better day or more beautiful place to be an equine vet on zone visits today!

User

Just a reminder for all our clients to check with competition organisers whether or not they will be requiring a 'flu booster within the last 6 months before competing!

User

Yesterday vets Ewan and Max, animal care assistant Libby and final year Bristol vet student KT English were at the Pegasus Centre doing health checks and dental examinations on all the Morpeth RDA ponies.

User

Last week vets Ewan and Euan both attended CPD on reproduction at Twemlows Stud Farm and Chapel Field Stud. This covered aspects of breeding from getting the mare ready to breed, the mare and foal, dealing with foalings and Euan stayed for an extra day on artificial insemination. Continuing to update ourselves by attending CPD like this enables us to learn the most recent advances from specialists in this field and bring any new ideas back to everyone at Alnorthumbria!

Update from the British Horse racing association. Racing will resume tomorrow with only declarations being accepted from horses that have been vaccinated in the previous six months. Trainers are advised to check current vaccination records before declaring tomorrow morning. In addition, all trainers will be required to provide a health declaration upon arrival at a racecourse.

If your horse is unvaccinated, now is the time to act! Protect your horse with reduced cost vaccinations during February and March with our vaccination amnesty.
Tetanus and equine influenza are key diseases that you can protect your horses against with regular vaccinations.
For this reason we are running a vaccination amnesty to restore your horse’s protection against the most important infectious diseases. We will be offering savings of up to £39.50 on vaccinations for hor...ses during February and March.
All you need to do is book your vaccination appointment with us.
Contact us on 01670 897 597 for more information or to book an appointment.
For more information on why to vaccinate see below;
Tetanus An extremely unpleasant disease to witness and is usually fatal. It is caused by bacteria found in soil and horse droppings, which can enter the body through wounds or punctures in the hoof. Horses will develop muscle stiffness resulting in a "rocking-horse" stance and "lock-jaw". If the horse survives tetanus treatment is likely to be intensive, prolonged and extremely costly.
Equine Influenza A highly infectious viral disease which affects the respiratory tract and lungs. Signs include a dry, harsh cough, fever, nasal discharge and lethargy. Following a bout of 'flu, horses may need complete rest for at least 6 weeks; however they can often be secondary complications which may require longer treatment.

Clinical signs of influenza include: Harsh cough High temperature (>38.5C) Nasal discharge Loss of appetite... Lethargy
Our advice to you: If your horse is showing any of the symptoms, please contact our practice on 01670 897 597 If your horse is vaccinated against flu, but has not been vaccinated within the last 6 months, please consider a booster. If your horse is unvaccinated, please start a course immediately. Call us and we will organise a visit.
• We encourage all owners to be vigilant and to try and avoid contact with other horses where possible. • We advise that all unvaccinated or lapsed horses are vaccinated as soon as possible. • Vaccination is the best way to control this outbreak. • Administering vaccination boosters will enhance herd immunity and provide the best possibility of protection – we advise booster vaccination of horses that have not received a flu vaccine in the last 6 months, especially those in large yards or those mixing with other horses at shows, events, etc. • Owners should be aware that vaccination does not always prevent infection, but the resulting disease will be less severe in vaccinated horses and they are less likely to spread the virus to other horses.

Flu outbreak - an update from the British Equine Veterinary Association:
"Racing was shut down today as a precautionary measure to restrict the movement of thoroughbred race horses and prevent any further spread of the equine influenza (flu) virus within the racing community.
This is a standard contingency in the event of an infectious disease within UK racing, in order to assess the scale and severity of the outbreak. Results of tests over the next 24 hours will help the in...dustry decide on any further action.
It is not currently being recommended that other, non-racing, equine events are cancelled but this might change depending on how the disease develops.
BEVA is encouraging vets and horse owners be vigilant. Signs of flu may be mild and can include coughing, nasal discharge, a high temperature, swollen glands (under the lower jaw), depression, and loss of appetite. Affected horses often don’t show all of these signs and infection can easily be missed.
If these signs appear then owners should isolate the horse and call their vet immediately.
It is essential that horses showing any of these clinical signs, and horses that have been in recent contact with horses showing these signs, do not travel to competitions or other events where there will be groups of horses.
BEVA suggests that owners discuss with their vet whether to vaccinate with a booster at this time. There is evidence that, under a heightened risk, early boosters can be beneficial."
Please call the clinic on 01670 897 597 if you would like to discuss any of this with a vet.

***Equine influenza***
We would like to ensure all our clients are aware of the current situation regarding equine flu in the UK.
There have been several confirmed cases of equine influenza in both vaccinated and unvaccinated horses across the UK - these are shown on the map attached.
... It is really important to be as vigilant as possible, checking all horses for signs of flu. These include a nasal discharge, coughing, lethargy, inappetence and a raised rectal temperature (above 38.5 degrees celcius).
The current advice from the British Equine Veterinary Association and the Animal Health Trust is that we should be administering flu vaccinations to all horses that have not received a vaccine in the past 6 months, to increase herd immunity and provide the best possiblity of protection.
Flu vaccination may not prevent infection, as in some of the cases involved in this outbreak, but it may decrease the severity of infection, and provide an increase in the immunity of the equine population as a whole.

FLU WARNING
Notice to all clients. There have been confirmed outbreaks of Equine influenza throughout Europe since the beginning of January with 4 outbreaks in Essex, Cheshire, Derby and Lincolnshire.
Please ensure your horses, ponies and donkeys are all up to date with the Influenza vaccine (primary course and boosted within the last 12 months).
... Although no vaccine is 100% cover it will massively reduce the chance of your horse contracting Influenza and will also reduce the chance of it being passed on and the severity of clinical symptoms
The BHA have released a statement for advice for all rachehorse trainers: "Due to the concerning situation in Europe where outbreaks have occurred in vaccinated horses, the BHA would like to advise that all horses which have not had a vaccination again Equine Influenza within the last six months should receive a booster vaccination."
Please also ensure if moving horses on and off yard to adhere to strict biosecurity measures and to isolate new horses for at least 2 weeks.
Clinical signs include a nasal discharge (especially if more than 1 horse on yard) and a harsh dry cough. If in doubt please contact us for further advice.

Thank you to everyone who helped get Nero better, especially to Keesjan who really did go above and beyond what was expected, and to Megan and Kate who helped load him in the howling wind, he clearly didn't want to leave ... Hence why we showed up again 3 days later! Hopefully this time he won't be back so soon! Once again thank you so much everyone for all of your help and hard work. Seriously can not rate this caring and dedicated team highly enough. Deserve more than 5*

User

Huge thanks to Ed who got my sportypony thru his tendon injury and operation . First jump today in about a year! Woohoo!

User

Fantastic service provided at a very difficult time. My young horse was brought in for a lameness work up and I was devastated to be told that he had somehow fractured his shoulder. Throughout the process and decision to euthanise the team and Euan in particular were wonderful and terribly patient with me. I know Ben was cared for, kept comfortable and treated with great respect and dignity while in their care. Thanks guys.

User

Fab well done. Great customer service x

User

Don't normally do this sort of thing - but the team at Alnorthumbria are one in a million. My mare is going good and strong thanks to Ed and his team's fast and immaculate action. Accident happened on the Sunday night, bank holiday and Ed's wife had just given birth - but there was no hesitation to get the treatment that she urgently needed. To this day if I pop in for routine visits, staff still ask after Darcey. I must mention Lesley Barwise-Munro too, who is our vet there for over 5 years - she has and is always a pillar of advise. I know with confidence its not about taking my money. The horse comes first and that might just be, practical advice - would thoroughly recommend.
