About Bede'S World

Bede's World in Jarrow is a great day out for everyone with a range of areas to explore!

Bede'S World Description

Bede was born in 673 AD and at the age of 7 moved into the monastery at Wearmouth-Jarrow, entrusted to the care of its founder, Benedict Biscop.
Bede spent the rest of his life in the monastery, dying in 735 AD.

Bede worked as a scholar and teacher and wrote extensively about the Bible to clarify it for his own, and for others, understanding. He is best known for his work, 'The Ecclesiastical History of the English People' (731 AD).

This book is our primary source for understanding the beginnings of the English people and the coming of Christianity - it was also the first book in history to use the AD dating system.

Come to Bede's World to find out more about Bede, his work and monastic life in medieval Northumbria.

“It is with great regret that the Trustee Board took the decision for Bedes World to cease operation from Friday 12 February 2016 due to a lack of funds.
Steps are being taken to put the company into administration through the appointment of an Insolvency Practitioner.
The Trustee Board have made arrangements for the immediate care of the farm animals and the security of the site.
... The Board would like thank all staff, volunteers and stakeholders for their hard work and dedication to Bedes World.”

Back in October last year, one of our work experience students from Epinay School and Friends' sixth form wrote a script, and with the help of Hive Live, it was turned into a short film. 'Aliens on the Farm' can be found at the link below, and has been entirely shot and edited by Epinay students. It's some fantastic work, and it's brilliant to watch!

Our Saturday Talks program kicks off with a mini-series of lectures all about our favourite fellow... Bede!
The first lecture starts at 12 noon on Saturday the 13th of February, and is being delivered by Richard Walsh. He will be answering the question of 'Bede... Why bother?'

Our chickens would like to wish you a good night!

It's #throwbackthursday... Today we're jumping back to when the cross on the bottom of the farm was being carved. It's a replica Anglo-Saxon cross, carved entirely by hand, and sits overlooking the River Tyne. It's been through a lot of wind and rain, but it's still here!

Calling all bird watchers! One of the volunteers from the farm spotted a Kingfisher down by the River Don this morning!

Bede the Bear was hiding beside our model of the monastery! He was enjoying seeing all of his little monk friends doing their work. He'll be going on another little adventure next week, so make sure to watch out for him on Wednesday again!

User

Meet Bede the Bear! Can you guess where he is hiding this week? He's taken a trip to a place he feels incredibly welcome.

Our good friends over at Port of Tyne will be featured in the BBC2 documentary Sea Cities. Catch it on Friday the 5th at 7pm!

It's #nationalstorytellingweek this week...what is your favourite tale to tell?

Did you know that February is also known as Solmōnaþ? Bede said that 'Sol-Monath can be said to be the month of cakes, which were offered to their gods', however, there is no reference to Sol meaning cake in Old English. Sol is generally referred to as mud or dirt in most texts. We'll be investigating into this more in our half term activities!

Our #mysterymonday object is a small piece of bone that has been inscribed with a human face.

It's #mysterymonday! Can you guess what this object is?

The museum and Jarrow Hall Tearooms re-open today at 10am! The wind doesn't stop us! So, naturally, we're thinking about food! How do you like your toast in the morning?

Very sad to read that this place has closed. I'm not local to the area, but visited a few years ago and thought it was one of the best living history museums I've been to and a world beating collection of early medieval objects. I hope the museum can be brought back in some way soon and wish their staff best of luck in finding new jobs.

User

Such a hidden gem in the north-east. I can't believe I have never visited here. The museum was amazing and theit collection is really impressive. The farm is great too and the coffee shop. We spent three hours there and can't wait to go back.

User

Such a great place to visit. So much to do for all ages. The farm and animals are great for all ages (particularly lovely on a good day) but the museum is interesting and interactive enough even for little ones. We met some very enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers. The new seating area and play space upstairs is a great idea. The cafe is lovely and catered brilliantly for my friends special dietary needs. We spent 4 hours here with my 10 year old and nearly 3 year old and they had a great time but I felt like we could have done with more time to see everything properly. (In that time we looked round the farm, looked in the replica houses, watched a fire building demonstration, made money pouches, looked round the museum, had a snack/drink at the cafe and used the indoor play space). I can't recommend this place highly enough for a day out. I think it is a hidden gem that maybe people don't realise has so much to offer. I am so pleased it has reopened!

User

Outstanding venue. We hosted a photography workshop here today and the entire team of Bede's World and Jarrow Hall were extremely helpful, accommodating and fun! Without a doubt this is still an amazing place to visit. Thanks to Matt, Roxanne and the rest of the team

Loved blending in. Lovely bedes, really nice world.

User

I was part of a group of over 250 volunteers from Sage helping to clean up the gardens of Bede World ready for the opening later this year. I never knew we had such an amazing place on our doorstep and I cant wait to visit again when the doors are open to the public

User

Had a great day today with kids aged 1-7. Brought my Y4 class in spring too and that was an excellent day as well. Keep up the good work!

Friendly, excellent, peaceful - could be 1000 miles from the city. A very detailed exhibition about Bede; farm was good; the 'Saxon Farmer', Jim, very enthusiastic and knowledgeble; nice coffee, salad and cakes, for afterwards; & no parking fee! Go next door to St Paul's Church, and the (free) English Heritage ruins of the Monastry. They're friendly in the Church, too. Obviously a Jarrow thing.

User

Excellent way to learn about Saxon Britain, hands on, helpful informative staff. Really enjoyed it. Cafe's good too!
