We’ve grown since then, but our core aims remain the same, to help the most in need in our communities to change their lives for the better.
Today, we run over 100 projects across the North East, the North West, Yorkshire and the Midlands.

The beautiful medieval surroundings of Blackfriars Restaurant - believed to be the oldest dining room in the UK! - are hosting our very special three-course banquet in support of FareShare North East

Today is the sixth annual Blackfriars Restaurant Charity Banquet in aid of FareShare North East, and we are delighted to say that once again the tickets have sold out!
50 lucky diners will enjoy a very special, creatively crafted 3 course meal, prepared from in-date surplus food from FareShare North East, otherwise destined for landfill.
As well as raising much-needed funds for FareShare North East, the charity banquet also provides the opportunity for work experience and ski...lls-building for six Changing Lives trainees. The Head Chef from Blackfriars delivers two full-day training sessions in food preparation and service. Today the Changing Lives trainees are working both in the kitchen and helping to serve the food.
Andy Hook, owner of Blackfriars Restaurant, said:
"We’re sure that the experience will bolster the trainees’ interest in the catering industry and will help to boost their CVs - so we’re delighted to provide this practical training whilst raising funds to help Fareshare North East continue their invaluable work."
The Blackfriars Banquet gives you the chance to try exciting cuisine in the spectacular surroundings of Blackfriar’s Medieval Banqueting Hall whilst helping to combat local food poverty, hunger and food waste.
If you would like to reserve your seats for 2019 please contact our Fundraising Manager Jill on jill.watkin@changing-lives.org.uk

Did you know that we have an Ethical Fundraising Promise?
When you choose to support us and help us change lives, we will not exploit your kindness by passing on your details, cold-calling you, or asking for donations on the high street (known as ‘chugging’). This is our promise to you.
Regular donations provide a steady stream of income that changes lives day in, day out. Over 17,500 people a year use our services… and that success starts with the generosity of people like y...ou.
We rely on the support of people like you, to help vulnerable people change their lives for the better.
Will you help our life-changing mission?

Talking is good for your mental health!
Changing Lives' Drug and Alcohol Team in York took that to heart for World Mental Health Day yesterday.
Staff organised a Tea & Talk event for colleagues, with fundraising sweepstakes and an all important cup of tea and slice of cake. They also wore green to symbolise mental health awareness.
... Across the North East and Yorkshire, we are on hand to help people take their first steps towards abstinence and support their ongoing recovery.
Our dedicated drug and alcohol services offer tailored support to help people challenge their dependency. We understand that recovery from substance misuse is a journey. But we know that it is possible with the right support.

On Thursday 18th October 2018, Mowden Park Rugby Club will host local business leaders and CEOs as they sleep out for Darlington's first ever CEO Sleepout UK event.
Over 30 entrepreneurs, CEOs and executives will be braving the elements and sleeping outdoors to raise awareness and funds to fight homelessness and poverty in Darlington.
They'll be joined by our Employment Team and our Fundraising and Event Assistant Alice, who said:
... "I will be joining the employment team next Thursday at the CEO Sleepout Darlington. I will be giving up a night of comfort to show my support for those less fortunate than ourselves, and to raise awareness of homelessness and poverty in Darlington. It’s going to be cold and damp night but it will be worth it and will hopefully encourage you to donate to help raise vital funds for Changing Lives."
The funds raised during the CEO Sleepout event will help Changing Lives provide guidance to people in crisis, to help them avoid becoming homeless and to help them build a brighter future for themselves and their family. You can support the team by donating online at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ch anginglives53

It is World Mental Health Day today.
Poor mental health is one of the many challenges that people accessing our services can face. This can put barriers in the way of them getting the support they need.
When people face a combination of challenges or barriers, it is sometimes called having 'multiple complex needs' or MCN.
... One way Changing Lives helps people with MCN is through our participation in the national Fulfilling Lives programme.
We are the lead partner in the North East, working with Mental Health Concern and Oasis Aquila Housing to improve outcomes for people presenting the most challenging circumstances.
We work with people who are often excluded from the support they need, and experience a combination of at least three of the following four issues:
- homelessness - offending - substance misuse - mental ill health
The Fulfilling Lives programme is an 8-year national learning programme funded by the Big Lottery Fund, ending in 2022.

Today is World Dyslexia Awareness Day. How many people do you think are affected by dyslexia in the UK?
You might be surprised to learn that it is estimated to be as high as one in 10.
That means there could be as many as 1,750 people in the 17,500 individuals we support each year with dyslexia.
... And many of these individuals won't know they have the condition.
Every day, Changing Lives staff work hard to remove barriers that stop people from getting the help they need.
When combined with the other complex needs experienced by the people we support, undiagnosed dyslexia could represent a significant additional barrier to accessing support.
That's why we've introduced Dyslexia Champions to tackle the issue.

We are delighted to say that Changing Lives has been awarded over £500 for our accommodation services in York after being selected for Waitrose’s Community Matters scheme.
Shoppers at the Foss Islands Road branch voted to support Changing Lives alongside two other local good causes.
After the votes were tallied, a pot of £1,000 was split between the three projects. Changing Lives is delighted to have received a donation of £529 thanks to this initiative.
... The proceeds will be used at our housing and homelessness projects in York to improve the accommodation we offer to the people we support.
Changing Lives has been supporting people in York since 2012. The charity delivers drug and alcohol services in partnership with Spectrum Community Health CIC, and provides a 12-week day treatment service as an alternative to residential rehabilitation.
As well as providing direct access accommodation to people experiencing homelessness in the city, Changing Lives also provides community outreach support to people entrenched in rough sleeping, and support for people facing discharge from hospital with nowhere to go.

I'm currently doing a research project for this charity, and their enlightened and compassionate ethos fills me with joy. I hope what I produce is some use to them - it would be an honour.

I think that changing lives are an amazing organisation, and that without their support I don't know where I'd be right now. I am from the Sunderland area and I'd like to say that my support worker Julie Mohammad has been my rock through some very hard times and when she is no longer my support worker she will be truly missed.

I lost my godmother Mary last year. We were her only real family. The last few months have been the hardest ever without her. We had already rang various charities about helping us clear her flat and you were the only people who responded. The guys who came were lovely and so careful with her things. You laughed when we told you some of her stories. I have been clearing my room for it to be redecorated and this charity was the first I thought of to give my things to. Four bin bags and various items all came to be dropped off to you this morning. Thank you very much. Xxx

Changing lives is a great charity for vulnerable women and children out there. They have always been there when I needed to talk about anything that was on my mind. So women out there if you need any support or help turn to this wonderful charity.

User

Can never thank you enough. Thanks for believing in me.

User

An amazing charity, put in as much as they believe in you and your life will change for the better.

User

Amazing Charity doing what it's name suggests. I was one of the very lucky people to attend Oaktrees in Gateshead for treatment, with the support of the team I graduated 15 months ago. The support I receive is ongoing in my recovery, I did some voluntary work at Oaktrees which built my confidence to the point I have been accepted for paid sessional work with the charity.

Thankyou Changing Lives for changing mine.
