Colonel Porters Description

Colonel Porter's Emporium - Tavern • Botanical Garden • Rhum Bar
(he's the master brewer behind Newcastle Brown Ale)

The story

It was written in the stars. Master brewing ran in Colonel Porter’s family, so following his time in military service, he teamed up with Chief Chemist Archie Jones, and took up the challenge of creating a brand new ale. Their complementary skills and three years of dedication and refining, hidden away and in secrecy in Archie’s Lab, resulted in the star of ales launching in 1927 – Newcastle Brown Ale (aka Dog, Journey into Space, Lunatic’s Broth).

Striking popular with the locals in the north, Colonel Porter wanted to share this bold brew with everyone far and wide and so navigating with constellation maps and led by the stars they travelled the globe distributing numerous bottles of ‘Dog’, with its ever-increasingly famous blue star badge (its five points representing the five founding breweries of Newcastle) and now, over 40 countries around the world enjoy this marvellous beverage. Just follow The Great Bear – he always points North.

And so we welcome you to Colonel Porter’s Emporium - a home that celebrates this journey, with a Tavern, Botanical Gardens and Rhum Bar. A place where Newcastle Brown Ale is enjoyed in its traditional form. And where you’ll also find vintage cocktails, tipsy teas, real ales, rhum masterclasses, private hire and an adventure around every corner…

It’s a true northern star. Come and see a man about a dog… you’re always welcome.

our first visit was lastnight and we almost left because we couldn’t find a menu, as we were leaving the bouncer on the door queried our early depart and actually took us back in, got us a menu and found us a great seat, so pleased he asked us and if it wasn’t for him we wouldn’t of got to sample the amazing food 😉 we’ll be back oh and the deco is fab

User

Stumbled upon Colonel Porters by accident in September and now it’s first on my boyfriend and I’s list of places to go in Newcastle! Cocktails and drinks are amazing and the food is lovely too! Can’t get enough of this place or the decor!

User

Love this place , great decor, great atmosphere, friendly staff ,good choice of Gins ,I will be back !

User

Have just visited for the first time, lovely staff and was shown around..... really impressed by the decor and quirky surroundings. Looking forward to visiting again to try out the menu and visit the secret room. Really impressed, totally different to the other bars and restaurants on Newcastle quayside

User

Had my 40th birthday celebration here last night......from the moment we were led through the bar past the secret bookcase entrance it was like you had stepped back to prohibition times...the cocktail making class was fantastic the staff so friendly and helpful managing to wrangle 26 women with ease and keep the party going we made 4 cocktails and also got welcome drinks and canapes meaning the cost per head was great value for money with other bars offering cocktail making experience in Newcastle.....i can not recommend this bar and the cocktail experience enough!! Thank you for making my birthday an afternoon to remember x x

User

Great establishment; decor and style is tasteful and well arranged, the guys on the bar were courteous, friendly and knowledgeable and they put together some great tasing cocktails from our personal tastes and preferences. I’d certainly come back and recommend it to anyone who likes to have their tastebuds tantalised!

User

Great atmosphere, good food, fun decor and brilliant staff. Organised for a hen party to come for tipsy afternoon tea last weekend and I couldn't have asked for more. Highly recommended!

User

Food was amazing, hard to pick a favourite but the small plates of black pudding bhaji, haddock and mac fish cakes and wings were all so tasty. My posh sarnie and o/h steak finished us off - couldn't even manage another cocktail! We'll def be back. Thank you x

User

First timer at the emporium. Will be back. Food very nice. Staff were great. They re-seated us as area we were initially sitting was very cold. Met one of my cousins i haven’t seen for many years, so was an added bonus.

User

Fab on all counts. A real hidden gem. Staff are very helpful and friendly and the vibe of the place is outstanding

User

We were a party of 7 who visited last night and we will definitely be back. The selection of rums is fantastic and there was plenty of choices for the non-rum drinkers. Lovely bar and a great set up. Rusty was our server and he is an absolute credit, nothing was too much trouble and he made our night. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because of one of the other barmen who seemed to think serving customers was completely beneath him and treated us all with disdain. When we returned a glass of coke because he'd given us normal coke instead of diet he argued with us and then took a drink of it. Seriously? Just learn a bit more about customer service and this place could be excellent!!

User

Popped in here on my birthday (Sunday night) for a couple of quiet drinks as me and my girlfriend love Rum and what an extensive and comprehensive stock of rhums they have! Well impressed!

The staff were friendly and we both love the quirkiness of the emporiums decor! We were both sitting there going ‘oooh look at that, ooooh look at that!’ for quite a while 😂 A couple of decent cocktails and some help from the staff on what rhum to choose made for a very pleasant evening.

The only downside, and it’s just a small one as it did pass, was the offputting whiff of sewers as you walk in. I remember this building smelling like this when the previous owners had their bar in there and although it doesn’t smell as strongly as it did then, may I suggest a couple of essential oil diffusers to treat the nasal senses to a treat like the visual and taste ones are?

User

I had Sunday dinner there this week and had the sirloin steak. Was absolutely amazing. The meat fell apart in your mouth and the vegetables were extremely tasty with a delightful crunch but beautifully cooked. Animal heads on walls was slightly off - putting but once you got used to them I couldn't complain. The brownie desert with homemade vanilla ice cream and strawberries was amazing. Staff were very helpful and a delight to deal with. Highly recommended for Sunday dinner

User

Great afternoon !

Called in yesterday with my Hubby and Son for our first visit only a couple of other people in waitress said we should take a seat and she would come to us. We waited for a while she didn’t come so Hubby went to bar himself ordered drinks and when he came back realised we had been overcharged for drinks. I went back to the bar and no staff on the bar at all waited and waited and another chap got sick of waiting and left eventually barman arrived I advised had been overcharged and when he checked he had charged my Hubby for the £6.25 Sauvignon instead of the Chile one which he had asked for and got. Batman couldn’t put right and said a manager would have to put right none available waited a long time eventually waitress came to help Batman pleasant but leaves a bit of a sour taste being overcharged on our first ever drinks bought in Colonel Porters especially when we r pensioners! Establishment itself beautiful though!

User

Went on Friday night and was very disappointed with the service provided. We were sitting for 25 minutes before anyone came over and asked if we wanted any drinks. We then had to call another waiter over for a second drink as our waiter was no where to be seen. At the end of the meal our plates were not taken away and I had to go to the bar and ask for the bill as we had been sitting with dirty plates for over 20 minutes. I found the service to be disappointing as other larger parties who came in after us were being attended to and even for their bill before us. On a plus side, we did enjoy the food, despite the slow and inattentive service!

User

We have visited your restaurant three times in the last few weeks and have been delighted with the service and food. On Sunday around 2 pm we called for lunch and we're shown to the "back room" by a young man waiter. Whilst waiting for some service a man came in and left the side door open which we had to close. We waited 20 minutes for a menu and drinks order and no-one came . We left in disgust! Your comments would be appreciated.

User

Sunday lunch - Food was nice but with only two staff it took us ten minutes to find someone to ask for our bill and then another ten minutes for the bill to arrive. Oh and I've since looked at the bill and a pint of coke or lemonade was £4! A little OTT! Plus £1 for extra gravy just to top it off.

User

Went last night got there for about 4.05 apox seeing the signs saying closing for private party at 5 we thought we would have 1 drink there but after waiting at the bar till 4.30 then 2 out of the 8 of us getting served to be told they weren’t going to serve anyone else no last orders called no warning and wouldn’t serve the rest of group was utterly shocked and disappointed
