About Dementia Matters

Dementia Matters provides specialist care, support and advice to people living with dementia, their families and carers.

Dementia Matters Description

Dementia Care is here to help if you are diagnosed with dementia and to help you if you care for someone with dementia, at any age and from any community.

We strive to offer the highest standards of support, both physically and emotionally, to everyone we help.

Our services are tailored to your needs, and include:
• 24 hours a day, 7 days a week support in people’s homes with a minimum 30 minute call.
• A specialist day care centre in Brunswick Village, Newcastle upon Tyne with the best dementia designed facilities in the north east and a smaller but equally supportive day facility in Hexham.
• A five bedroom respite centre, based in Brunswick Village, where people with dementia can spend quality time, supported by friendly and highly trained staff, taking full advantage of the state of the art facilities in our specialist on site day centre.

Our highly trained and experienced carers can help with washing, dressing and hygiene matters, they can prepare and cook nutritious meals, carry out domestic services such as laundry and shopping and can administer medication if necessary, too. Where you have specialist medical needs, we can often help. They can also, where required, handle your finances and arrange the collection or delivery of money for you in conjunction with Social Services providing an Enduring Power of Attorney is in place.

We provide services to both private and Local Authority funded people, and for those with Direct Payments. If you think you may be eligible for financial assistance from your Local Authority, then read the sections on our website about getting financial support, contact the Social Care Direct team in your Local Authority or speak to your Social Worker. You can either book services with us direct if you are paying privately or with a Direct Payment, or ask your Social Worker to commission our services for you.

Dementia Matters were delighted to host Engie for a session on Dementia Awareness Training. Training and Quality Manager Rachel Fox, and Admiral Nurse Judy Mattison hosted the session, bringing years of practical and clinical experience to the table. There were lots of questions and great interaction, so we were delighted with the day. We will be delivering two more sessions for Engie later in the year. For more information on Dementia Training, please contact Rachel at Rachel@dementiamatters.net, or Hannah Stevens the Head of HR and Training at hannah@dementiamatters.net.

There is growing evidence of the benefit of exercise for those with dementia, and indeed for an ageing population in general. To that end we are looking to kit out two fitness suites in our day care centres and are looking for running machines, sit in cycle machines, rowers and weights stations (not free weights). Its a big ask I know but shy bairns get nowt!

We'd all like to say a huge congratulations to our very own Joe Costello on being shortlisted for the #NTAwards. What an incredible achievement! We all know you deserve to go all the way with it, so GOOD LUCK.

Sad to hear on the radio this morning that due to falling donations a children s hospice in Walsall may need to close. This is something that is facing small independent charities across the country and exemplifies why I believe donations should be given and spent locally. It is small charities that employ people and provide the bulk of local services, so why give money to the huge charities where 50% may go just on supporting the fundraising office and hefty salaries.
I dont dispute the good work that larger charities do, but if you want your family looked after when they have dementia, its us that will deliver the service, not the big boys.

Lovely to see so many people at our Cuppa and Catch Up on Wednesday. Nice relaxed atmosphere and some lovely feedback. Thanks to everyone who popped along. Don’t forget, we meet at the Bradbury this Friday 10am until 11.30am for anyone who wasn’t able to attend yesterday.
Please also consider donating to us so we can keep events like these going. They're massively helpful in opposing alienation and loneliness as they allow for people to come and simply have a chat with other people in similar situations, as well as our specialist staff who can help them with their journey.

We have a busy month ahead with weekly table tennis sessions, the occasional bit of baking, a few trips out to Scottswood Garden and The Discovery Museum, as well as some Still Life art sessions.
Stay tuned for pics and posts to see how it all goes!

As part of our Supported Well, Living Well pilot group, we worked with Scottswood Garden to plant some sunflower seeds with members of the group. Bill and Mary are delighted with the ones they planted, and the two are doing well in their garden so far. The Dementia Advice Centre is growing in more ways than one!
Help us to keep going with programmes like this by donating here, or at www.dementiamatters.net
