About East Durham Creates

East Durham Creates is about getting more local people involved in creating and experiencing great art.

East Durham Creates Description

East Durham Creates is a programme set up to try out new ways of getting more local people involved in something creative. It’s about trying new things, building on what’s already happening, learning what works – and what doesn’t – and pulling together to bring about long term change in East Durham.

After an ambitious start (including a festival with more than 40 events over 20 days in 30 venues! ) we asked people what they thought. More than three quarters of people who responded were from East Durham. With their help, we’re making some changes – there’ll be a year round programme of things to see and do and more ways for people to get involved, from coming up with ideas, working with artists and running events, to training and volunteering opportunities. Or just simply coming along to see, experience and (hopefully! ) be surprised by some amazing art.

Whether we’re commissioning new work from community groups or international artists, East Durham Creates projects will always be inspired by things that local people have told us matter to them – the people, stories and heritage that are unique to our area.

We know what we’re trying to do will take time, but by working with a network of local partners including schools and colleges, community centres, local businesses and transport providers to support grass-roots cultural activity and build local capacity through investing in skills development and training we are laying the foundations for long term change.

Have a look around Facebook for things to see and do, or ways to get involved, or get in touch to find out more.

‘If These Wall Could Talk” is a one day pop up art trail in surprising and unusual locations in Horden, created with the local East Durham community and artists Sally and Nicola. Commissioned by East Durham Creates major commissioning scheme “This Place We Call Home”, the exhibitions focus on everyday life and what home means to people. They feature artwork created with individuals who are primarily aged over 55, weaving in snippets and stories that add humour, warmth and a very personal look at life within their home.
The event will run continuously from 9am until late, with impromptu small scale performances throughout the day.

More sneak peeks of our next major Commission If These Walls Could Talk. Our artists Sally and Nicola have been working across the East Durham community ahead of their finale pop up arts event (save the date, 14th May in Horden!).

Congratulations to all of our young people involved in No More Nowt Happens. Over the course of a year almost 100 young people have been involved in organising and staging 5 major art events across East Durham which over 550 people attended. We celebrated their achievements on Friday and had some special performances from Lisette Auton, Barry Hyde and Rowan McCabe- Poet.
Throughout the project the young people have learnt how to manage and organise large art events; a live music gig, a major photography exhibition, a comedy night, a digital-art exhibition and a spoken word night. Most of the young people involved had never been to an event like this before and were taken on various Go & See trips to help them to learn how to stage an art event.
Thank you to County Durham Community Foundation for funding this amazing project.

Great to see East Durham Trust's 'Yes You Can' art group learning about East Durham Creates and ways they can get involved in our projects. They even got to meet artist's Sally and Nicola who are working on our major commission If These Walls Could Talk and design a teacup. We are excited to have you involved in our future events and projects.

Great to see the No More Nowt Happens' groups coming together. They attended a workshop with Rowan McCabe to create something special to present for the No More Nowt Happens Showcase. The group have been reflecting on the experience of the project and how it has changed their perceptions of art.
