About Expanded Interiors

Bringing contemporary site-specific fine-art practice to Roman houses at Herculaneum and Pompeii

Expanded Interiors Description

Expanded Interiors is developing site-responsive fine art installations within two UNESCO World Heritage sites, Roman houses at Parco Archeologico di Pompei (Casa del Bel Cortile) and Parco Archeologico di Ercolano (Casa del Criptoportico). The project explores the ancient Roman wall paintings, Roman artefacts, and architectural remains relating to these houses, and their relevance for contemporary fine-art practice, responding to the specific histories and complex nature of these archaeological sites within a contemporary context.
Initiated by visual artist Catrin Huber, Expanded Interiors is lead by Newcastle University and brings together an experienced team from contemporary art, archaeology and digital technology.

Expanded Interiors is funded by the AHRC (Arts & Humanities Research Council) and is working in partnership with the Parco Archaeologico di Pompei, the Parco Archeologico di Ercolano, and The Herculaneum Conservation Project.
