George Stephenson'S Birthplace Nt Description

Birthplace of the world-famous railway engineer

Discover the humble birthplace of great railway pioneer, George Stephenson, whose entire family lived in just one room. Our costumed guide tells the story of how challenging life was for mining families, like George’s, that once crammed into this now charming little stone cottage, nestled in a pretty garden near the river Tyne.

Although the Museum is closed during the winter season, our Tearoom will remain open every weekend from 11am-3pm. If you're walking or cycling along the Wylam Waggonway, pop in and warm up with hot and cold drinks, freshly baked cakes, homemade soups, toasties and bacon butties!

George Stephenson’s Birthplace, café and garden is closed during 2017.
The one-room visitor attraction has been cared for by National Trust for 68 years, however faced with rising costs and a decline in visit numbers, this will allow time to re-evaluate how this special place can be used to provide an experience that inspires visitors. You can walk along the Wylam Waggonway alongside the beautiful Tyne.

We're getting ready to re-open this Thursday, the first time we've been open this early in the year! You can discover the little room where young George grew up, relax with friends and enjoy a cuppa.
Apologies for any inconvenience caused to those who arrived last weekend.
