How much time are you spending in the clinch? There is no secret or short cut to learning the clinch in Muay Thai. Like achieving the top standards in any sport hours and hours of careful practice needs to be done.... Clinching is physically demanding, relying on strength and balance to manipulate and manoeuvre your opponent onto knees strikes or elbows. However clinching also uses 'feeling and fluidity' to unbalance or sweep your opponent. Clinching can be a great way to grind down and tire out a technically superior long range fighter, or stifle a powerful puncher and also a great way to land lots of big scoring knees and sweeps. In this example it is essential to gain the inside position controlling your opponents neck and arm. Once you have fought for control you can then break your opponents balance and off balance them relatively easy.

When you use strong round kicks in a fight it is important to have tools and skills to compliment it. Think of it as having additional options or contingency plans in place for an opponents way of dealing with it. This is where a fighters IQ is impo...rtant. So many people just coach a fighter how to kick, but not how to actually use it. Think of a fighter like Singdam or Superlek - everyone knows they have superb right kicks but still find it hard to stop them. Here is a little drill we use to coach our fighters how to deal with a puncher once you have fired in your kick. The first thing is to be aware this is a possibility - the next is to defend it, but also end in a position to use the correct counter. You can see in this vid the kicker holding strong position with a firm guard to shield and return with a knee as a puncher will obviously be moving closer, and end up in an inside position to control the clinch. You can also see the kicker utilising the kick and teep to interrupt the counter. Done with control the teep can leave you in a position to strike again 🥊 Are you a good kicker? Are you learning skills to reinforce this skill and make you feel more confident?

I've always travelled to train and learn from the best in the business. If there is something you want to do or to achieve it makes sense to seek out someone who has trodden that path previously and learn from them🙏
If you wanted to be a vet you wouldn't learn much from a welder 🤣

Hitting pads is a fundamental part of training Muay Thai - but what are we actually trying to achieve? We see many videos of top Thai champions crushing the pads with a variety of techniques cleanly, powerfully and fluently. Quite often the coach doesn't even 'call' the techniques everything is instinctive. Obviously this takes a lot of time and practice and isn't achieved overnight. So unless you have been hitting pads since a young age surrounded by elite Thai fighters and ...coaches how can you get the most out of it? Here are a few pointers to help you on your way :- 🥊 Accuracy, look at the target and always aim for the centre of the pad, strive for that feeling of a clean technique striking the target - make this a habit. Imagine firing a gun with your eyes closed 🤣 🥊 Balance, it is important to feel in balance before, during and after executing a strike, this will help you be in position to deal with a counter strike or flow seamlessly into your next strike. 🥊Distance, tune into where your opponent is and utilising the correct strikes at the correct range. 🥊Relaxation and breathing - often the most neglected part of training but most important. Relax to execute a better strike - we never perform at our best when tense. This will also help conserve our energy. Learn to breath between strikes correctly. Imagine swimming the length of a pool whilst holding your breath! You will also be able to up your tempo when required, as you will need in a fight.
Please note not once have I mentioned speed or power, as speed and power will be a result of practising all of the above regularly over an extended period of time. There are no short cuts to perfection - learn to love the grind as the end result is worth it 💕
We have classes 6 days per week for all abilities, or I am available for 121 or small group tuition.

Great day at Champs of the Future yesterday. Jamie showed his real potential yesterday holding his own and pushing one of the best kids around to a close pts loss. Joseph got a draw, many in attendance thought he won - it is what it is 😁 Sometimes as adults we take away the fun from kids when clearly they are enjoying what they do so much - they both came with a smile, relished tough challenges and left with a smile on their faces. Great kids - proud of their performance and attitude - this is what martial arts should instill 🙏🙏🙏

Quick reminder I'm away in Manchester today so no 10am class. Back to normal Monday 🥊

Listening...a fighters most valuable attribute. My best fighters over the years have all had very different styles and characters but the one thing they had in common was the ability to listen. The moment fighters stop listening they lose. It is often said when a fighter starts thinking for themselves from a coaching point of view you lose them - I agree to a certain extent through experience. Listening begins in your first ever class and never stops...a good coach has his/he...r fighters ear and they can pick your voice out in the middle of chaos! Be mindful of who you listen to, there are plenty of charlatans out there pretending they know what they are talking about - it astounds me that people pay a lot of money to people who only make them sweat and share very little knowledge or experience! Training tonight at 6.30pm

Wishing both Joseph and Jamie best of luck for their upcoming bouts this weekend. Both of them facing tough opponents but both relishing the chance to pit their wit and skills against the best - as it should be 👌💪👍🙏🥊

Power without control can be detrimental to a fighter. A lack of control can lead to a loss of balance, confidence and make us vulnerable to counter strikes. We spend hours practising kicks but do we use them to their full potential? A kick can be one of your most powerful strikes but are you using it correctly? In order to strike with a powerful kick we must position ourselves accordingly in the ring, have the confidence to deliver a powerful strike and protect against a pot...ential return. Here is a little drill we use, utilising the floating block to increase our balance, control, leg strength and confidence. Are you implementing drills in your game to increase your power and ability?

If you looked up the word "fighter" in the dictionary you would see a photo of Petchatchai. On the brink of being rocked and hurt this guy always roars back, never in a boring fight. Here is his fight from tonight's Rajadamnern show. If you enjoy it check out some of his other bouts on youtube 🥊🙏

Can parents of the Kickstart class please remember it's the first Monday of the month (5mondays this month) so it's £20 to hold your place 🥊 💪

Massive congratulations to these three competing yesterday at the Sandee Open in Barnsley. All of them had tough bouts and I'm hearing loads of outstanding feedback for all of them. Well done team, I'm very very proud of you all 🙏👍👋🥊💪👌

User

Quick reminder there is no training on this morning as we are setting up the UWCB boxing show for tonight 🥊

Earlier this week I posted a video of these two sparring two years ago! How do top athletes perform under the spotlight? They are relaxed, do not feel tension and flow naturally - like they do in practice. We create a teaching environment that allows our fighters to gain confidence, grow, have fun and actually put into practice skills they have learned and guess what - you see them perform on the big stage! Muay Thai can be enjoyed by everyone - I have classes 6 days a week for all ages and abilities, and I am available for private 121 tuition 🥊

User

Thought for the day - patience.
These two have grown older, always learning always improving and consistently training.
Many people give up when obstacles occur and life challenges appear but time will always pass. Two years gone in the blink of an eye. What will you be doing in two years - telling someone what you were or could of been - or improving steadily through consistency?🙏
