Some of our year 9 students have taken part in an amazing hands on workshop run by Medical Mavericks. Pupils had the opportunity to try out real medical equipment in the classroom and got to learn about a range of different careers in the NHS. Activities included: taking blood from a fake arm, using an ultrasound machine to see inside their body, trying key hole surgery and scanning the retina in the eye with an eye phone. If you would like to find out more about different careers in health please visit: www.medicalmavericks.co.uk www.healthcareers.nhs.uk

“We are delighted to announce that Harton Academy have been awarded Champion School status by Renaissance Learning. This reflects our students’ great progress in reading over recent years. Staff and students have a fabulously positive attitude towards Accelerated Reading. Well done to all staff and students involved!”

Harton Academy was delighted to host a learning visit for the North East LEP on Thursday 28 March 2019, with delegates attending from Hong Kong and Wales. The delegates were interested to find out about our experiences of a recent pilot project we were involved in, linked to the Gatsby Benchmarks, which are a framework of eight guidelines that define the best careers provision in schools and colleges in England and which are an integral part of the government’s new Careers Strategy. We continue to be involved in this really important work as a Lead School in the North East LEP’s North East Ambition programme.

We are proud to announce that we are now supporting The Red Box Project. The Red Box Project is a community run project that has been set up to tackle period poverty by providing free sanitary products in schools to any young woman who needs them. It is focused on ensuring no young woman misses school because of her period. The project relies on donations of period products, new underwear and tights from members of the community which students from our school will have access to. We have set up three donation points within school, in both receptions and the sports centre, if you wish to donate. Can we take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support?

Congratulations to our Girls’ U15 Rugby Squad who have won the County Cup for the first time in the school’s history; many thanks to Vic Young for sponsoring the competition. Following their phenomenal first round success in which they scored 19 tries and conceded none, the girls went on to convincingly win their final two games, scoring 15 tries in all and conceding only 3. Their commitment and sportsmanship throughout the competition have been phenomenal and they can be justly proud of the way they have represented themselves and Harton Academy. They are excellent ambassadors for the sport.
