Came to Fat Buddha for the first time today for my birthday lunch. It was bloody beautiful, can't fault the food or service at all.

We ordered dragon ribs and chicken dumplings to start, and honey chilli chicken and pan fried asparagus wrapped in ribeye steak for mains, with fried rice and salt and chilli chips. We shared everything so had a good variety between us.

Food was beautifully presented, and was absolutely delicious. The ribs were sweet, without being sickly, and sticky with a bit of warmth from the chilli. The meat just fell off the bone and melted in the mouth. The dumplings were crisp on the outside and the filling was nicely flavoured and the dipping vinegar was just the right amount of acidic to bring all the flavours together. The steak and asparagus rolls were great, way more steak than we expected, wrapped around perfectly cooked asparagus. We ordered the pepper sauce on the side instead of over it, it was nice and peppery, and the steak was delicious. The chilli honey chicken stole the show though. It was absolutely gorgeous. Chilli wasn't hot, just warming but it added so much flavour and was balanced by the sweetness of the honey. I don't normally order chicken in Chinese food as I often find it a bit strange tasting so tend to go for beef instead, but this dish was certainly worth the risk. I'd happily order it again.

All this and a bottle of mineral water and pint of Coke for £30 (including a 10% optional service tip) well actually it was less than £30 but we rounded up.

And as we were sat by the window and got to leisurely sit and watch the tall ships pass by, which was lovely, it was just a lovely place to have lunch.

The staff were helpful, friendly and polite, they were always around when you needed something without being hanging over you as you eat.

So thank you Fat Buddha, for the lovely food the friendly service, the beautiful view and making my 35th birthday lunch so enjoyable. X we shall be back.

Beautiful restaurant located on the Seaburn seafront. Visited here last night for the first time and it didn't disappoint! I had the Miss Saigon non alcohol cocktail as designated driver and I was pleasantly surprised by how refreshing and not at all sickly this drink was. Had the salt and chilli king prawns to start, absolutely beautiful and very light. My wife had the salmon fish cakes and would highly recommend them. My main was nasi goreng...a stunning dish that didn't disappoint. Packed full of flavour and a substantial portion! Came with 2 satay chicken skewers too! My wife had the mango duckling. Decent portion of duck with delicious soft pieces of mango and a perfectly complimentary sauce. The food, service and ambience were all excellent! We will defoes visit again! Thanks guys

User

Very helpful staff. Food lovely. Able to deal with our large group and those of us with allergies. Drinks a bit slow but worth the wait. Will definitely visit again.

User

Food was ok. We had chicken satay and spring rolls for starters. Then sweet and sour chicken and beef in blackbean sauce for main. The beef had a chilli next to it on menu indicating it was spicy. It was bland and tasteless. I had boiled rice and it was over cooked and stuck together. It was ok for a lunch time special but wouldn't rush back. Had the same in Durham Fat Buddha and it was so much nicer there. Have to say the service was very good.

User

Food and service was brilliant, got the set menu for two at £25 per person...was only afterwards I figured out that £25 per person is more than it would cost to order the items individually also think adding the 10% gratuity charge to the bill is a bit cheeky... overall was a nice meal but overpriced and is a bit of a con to have the set menu work out more than ordering things separately

User

Bad bad service. No communication, tried to clear plates twice during our meal because they needed booths by 1pm (main was served at 12.45) overhead the staff discussing it. Felt very rushed. Only got one of our desserts, the server never brought the other despite us saying one was missing. Food nice but seriously let down by customer service

User

The food was OK, the service was terrible, over an hour wait between starter and main when other tables were being served properly, so long that my elderly mother was so upset that she couldn't eat her meal when it eventually arrived and it went back as it came. No apology just a 10% service charge added to our bill (for a table of 3) which I refused to pay. When asked where our meal was or why it took so long, the staff just said "I do not understand". Not somewhere I would rush back to.

User

The food looks good BUT has no taste at all. The prices are double what they should be making the abysmal food even harder to swallow. Took 30 people to the restaurant on a Saturday night the table set up was horrendous we may as well have been eating alone & no free prawn crackers while we waited 50 mins for starter. I mean seriously £3.50 for about 10 pieces should be complimentary like EVERY other restaurant. They made nearly £1k off us and we certainly didn’t feel any customer consideration. Won’t be going back terrible service

User

Having look at the website, and found the early bird menu available EVERY day, I booked a table for 4 people. Got to the restaurant in Seaburn to be sat down and given a set menu of £25 per person! I queried this and apparently they have never offered this menu on SATURDAYS and the seaburn restaurant has a different website address so I was accused of looking at the wrong website!! I asked to see the manager who was very rude. When I said the website was misleading he replied saying I was Looking in the wrong place. I showed him where I was looking and he shook his head repeating “wrong place, wrong place”! So as it was restaurant week in sunderland I thought we could possibly have this menu but I was abruptly told that this was not available on a SATURDAY! At this point, I’m getting the message very loud and clear that they do no promotions on a SATURDAY!!!

We ordered from the al a carte menu and yeah the food was nice but a little pricey, £12.80 or so per main meal and then side dishes were separate. The food is nice and the location is stunning but the staffing needs looking at - the website is very misleading. Probably would go again, but not in that much of a hurry. Hopefully staff turnover is high and the manager will move on!! Customer service wasn’t high on the agenda!!

User

Such a shame, a promising restaurant in Sunderland in a fabulous location just doesn’t cut it. Fillet Teriyaki 3 small pieces of meat which equates to 1/3 of a steak on a hot skillet with a few pieces of onions. 0 our of 10. Dim sum cold and not served with soy or even bowls to dip them in 0 out of 10. Meals cold even though we were sat next to the kitchen so that short walk must have been via the sea front!! Very poor Fat Buddha. You won’t be around long if you keep that up. On the plus side the waitress from the Czech Republic was excellent and made the meal bearable. Buck your ideas guys we have higher standards in Sunderland!!!

User

Such a shame this restaurant has gone down hill, never had such terrible service and food. Had a set menu which turned out to be the quality of a back street Chinese take away with a hefty price tag. Avoid at all costs.

User

Service extremely poor. Let down by two immature members of staff. One member gave me a ‘pphhfffttttt’ and shrugged her shoulders when I asked which beer they had on tap. Food arrived and it was cold to touch - as I attempted to call a young waitress over, she laughed to the other. They then both continued to laugh as I spoke to them about my complaint regarding the cold food. Shocking service from a restaurant that could be really good.

User

Only getting 1 star as there is no option for no stars !! Absolute disgrace from beginning to end .... this is no way what the fat buddha chain want representing their brand ...! An official complaint has been lodged into the shambles that was spent there on Saturday night for my friends birthday. Food taking 2 and half hours to come out (that was just the starter) no apologies for the delay, main courses were cold, uncooked, tasteless, utterly disgusting and the staff / management should be ashamed to work there and of themselves for the lack of pride in their jobs and basic customer service skills .. Do Not visit !!!!! Cannot stress enough

User

Most miserable unfriendly service I have experienced in a long time. Cocktails £7.25 a time and they couldn't manage service with a smile when we were the only people in there. Spent £45 on cocktails yet couldn't bring them to our table yet someone ordered two lattes and they got them on a tray to their table. Good job they have no competition thats all I can say!

User

Initially put on a table in a corridoor as other tables were not cleared (4 tables with dirty dishes and it wasn't busy!). Waited and asked to be moved to a better table. Then waited for a drinks order to be taken - only asked for water! Waited for it. And waited. And waited. Another couple came in and had their food order taken before us. After 40 minutes we gave up left. Shame as previously we loved it here. Gone downhill and I dont like feeling like I should be grateful to sit there and wait until someone can be bothered to serve us. Won't be back.

User

Didn't stay long enough to eat so I can't rate the food. We walked out after enquiring politely if the lunch menu was still available to be met with a really poor attitude from the male member of staff serving us. We won't be attempting to try this restaurant again! Off somewhere else for food now!
