Penzance Jubliee Pool taps into warm water ‘geothermal vein’
A project to heat Penzance’s iconic Jubliee swimming pool has virtually struck gold. Geothermal Engineering Limited have drilled a well to 410 metres deep and successfully found a warm water ‘geothermal vein’. The water at this depth was much hotter than expected at almost 30 degrees Centigrade. The system will now be developed so that a section of the pool can be e...njoyed all year round providing a wonderful resource for residents and visitors alike.
The successful drill concludes the first part of the scheme and will now allow the project to develop the integrated system that should see the public bathing in the hot water section of the pool during 2019. This project is a very important part of a wider aim by Geothermal Engineering Limited to prove the viability of geothermal energy in Cornwall and follows last week’s start of drilling at the United Downs Deep Geothermal Energy Project near Redruth.
The drilling was logistically challenging as it was in the town centre and the well reached a depth of 410 metres, equivalent to one and a half Eiffel Towers, or just 10 metres less than Brown Willy (Bron Wennili) which stands at 420m. The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and Geothermal Engineering Ltd.
“We are delighted that we have hit the hot water vein. It is warmer than expected and capable of yielding much more geothermal energy than planned. We can now work with the Jubilee Pool team to deliver an amazing, sustainable facility for local residents and tourists alike. The drilling has been completed and we would very much like to thank all the local residents for their patience and co-operation.” Said Ryan Law Managing Director of GEL.
The Jubilee Pool is a celebrated Art Deco lido on Penzance Promenade that was first opened in 1935, the year of King George V’s silver jubilee. When faced with dereliction of even closure, the local community formed the Friends of Jubilee Pool and have put the pool back in pride of place in the town.
Jubilee Pool has recently raised over £500k via a community share offer towards the £1.8m project to construct a new heated section of the pool, double the size of the cafe and create new community space, this will now allow the pool to open all year round from spring 2019. Further funding has been sourced from the Architectural Heritage Fund and the Co-operative Community Investment Foundation.
One of the directors of Jubilee Pool, Martin Nixon commented "My brother Charles initially suggested that we should heat a section of the pool with geothermal energy over eight years ago, so I'm thrilled to see his fantastic idea move ever closer to reality. I'm confident it will be a hugely popular attraction, and that the resulting economic benefits to Penzance will be significant.”

We have increased overnight security and are arranging repainting. What a senseless act, spoiling our wonderful community pool and heritage asset for everyone. A waste of the charity’s money to repair mindless vandalism. Drilling is in progress and we are about to start our building project for our new geothermal pool and redeveloped top terrace buildings. This is all thanks to your incredible support! With over 80 summer seasons between these two photos, we can't begin to imagine the number of cups of tea, coffee and cakes that have been sold from 'The Hatch'. As you know, we have the funding (Yay!!) to upgrade our entire top terrace this winter. We will not only have an unique geothermal pool, our plans also include a new poolside café and community rooms, we will also be open all year round. The redevelopment on our top terrace will make the most of the space which overl...ooks the pool and its surroundings with the beautiful views stretching across Mounts Bay.
Thank you. Without your continued support, we would not have been able to develop and grow as one of the biggest attractions in Penzance. To our customers and new shareholders, you are amazing. We are all really excited and cannot wait to open the gates next year when our plans have come to life..... ROOKIE LIFEGUARDS AWARD The Jubilee Pool has 10 newly qualified Rookie Lifeguards proudly showing off their RLSS gold level lifesaving award after completing the programme that teaches children water safety, first aid and lifesaving skills. Well done all!

✨✨✨We did it. Last night as 30th September 2018 reached midnight we successfully raised £508,380 (with 1247 investors in 123 days) for our geothermal project. Thank you to you all for your incredible support. ✨✨✨

We went today, got there early which was a good plan as some queues for an hour to get in! Had an amazing time and will definitely be back x

We visited a few weeks ago and were all super impressed! First visit to an outdoor pool! We parked across the road- which was very handy! It is very clean and staff are friendly � My daughters both really enjoyed swimming in the pool too! Will definitely visit again!

We all loved it here and had a fabbo day with our little one and friends. The water was so clean and warm.

The best atmosphere, scenery & all round perfect way to spend a day. Absolutely loved it! The water was great and warmer than I was expecting. The toddlers thought the little pool was great & the once you’d got your costume wet the big pool was fab! Cafe, ice cream truck, staff, music & vibe was as all brilliant. Loved it and would recommend it to anyone.

So lucky to have such a beautiful pool on our doorstep. Thanks so much for the doggie pool party on Sunday. Our boy Sam had such a great time and made some lovely friends.

Just come back from 2 weeks in penzance and very much enjoyed spending our late afternoons in the cafe

while the kids swam. The new pizzas are amazing!!

Just a couple of bits of feedback....

�Wine needs to be offered in a wine glass tumblers really put me off (I brought my own glasses)

�the chocolate fudge needs to go back on top of the banana cake it's not the same without it

� and there needs to be more choice for children, maybe chicken nuggets or spag bowl!



But I really can't fault the cafe or the pool you are all doing a fantastic job and I look forward to next year

I've lived in Cornwall my whole life and visited PZ a lot over the years. Today was the first time we visited Jubilee Pool. We loved it, although a few suggestions that I'm sure you can clarify or possibly change in the near future. My Daughter is disabled and a couple of larger changing areas would make life easier (apologies if you have already and I didn't see them). A ramped access point into the pool aswell as stairs. And a hoist would greatly help disabled children and adults and no doubt attract more customers. Especially given its natural salt water with many benefits (I work in the water management trade). Thank you for a great visit and we'll be back very soon �

Had a lovely snack and hot drinks at the cafe today. The service was great and the setting is just lovely �

Great views from the superb onsite cafe. The menu offers a great choice of lunch choices, snacks including delicious homemade cakes and savoury choices. Also a good choice of refreshments and a nice place just for a coffee.

Didn't swim but others were and it looked incredibly inviting on the sunny day I stopped by. The pool is cold water, but for those that wish wetsuite hire is £5. Entry is £3 or £2 concession. Inflatable days on a Sunday at the moment, it's free then. Not sure of depth of pool for those learning to swim, but there is a very shallow paddliong pool next to the large pool.

Fantastic time had by all. Friendly staff, great cafe and the inflatable session added to the enjoyment. Can't wait to visit again. Thank you.

The management acknowledged a problem with a slippery surface entering the baby pool and closed the pool for the problem to be rectified!

Extremely impressed with them making the safety of our little ones a priority and so quickly!!

We will be getting a season pass for sure!!!

Beautiful art deco pool,sheltered too so pefect on a hot sunny day. Clean & well staffed. Love it there!

Amazing day in the sun at this beautiful pool. The Small pool was shut which was a shame as visiting with my 3 year old but she loved jumping in off the steps into the big pool. We can’t wait for the small pool to be open again.

A big thank you to the lifeguards for being friendly, helpful and very cool

Very large pool and reasonably priced for a family. A good bit of space at the top tier. Table top tennis Available too. All spotlesesly clean. Great service. Cafe is worth a visit because the food is great and very nice coffee. Just one snag, the water is freezing cold. Definitely bring a wet suit. But some prefer the cold.

If you don't have the right post code you've lost your Locals Discount this year and are paying full Tourist rates! My Son and his friends all at the same local school went yesterday and some got in cheaper than others. Disgusting thing to do to those who support Jubilee Pool ALL season long.
