Liberal Democrats Councillors in the north of Gosforth today showed their support for keeping open the Brunswick tip (Household waste and recycling centre)
Pictured here are Parklands and Castle wards councillors Pauline Allen, Phil Lower, Anita Lower (Opposition Leader) David Down and Robin Ashby plus local campaigner Christine Morrissey.
Christine said "This is a vital facility in the north of the city, with an important role in helping to meet recycling targets. Local peop...le also rightly fear an increase in fly tipping if it's closed next year under Labour's planned budget cuts."
Robin recalled "We were told there were no such closure plans. A few days later they were announced. So we can't trust assurances - we want to see the idea deleted from the Budget which the full Council will be discussing in March."
There's still time for local people to sign a petition to save the tip at change.org

Look out, there's fake news about. Online being used to spread fear and distress with accusations entirely untrue. This is what we've received this morning from a senior Council official about Polwarth roundabout.
Dear Councillors
I can confirm that on completion the exit from Polworth Drive will be two lanes at the roundabout. The plan that is available on the scheme website confirms this.
... However, at the current time due to works at the junction and in order to construct the new kerb lines we need to use temporary traffic management and reduce the exit to a single lane to enable the works to be carried out safely.
Given this, and the fact we’d clearly referenced the need for lane closures while we did work in this area, the level of traction an alleged conversation has had is unreasonable and some of the commentary online and by email improper in its accusatory tone.
As pointed out in recent eFocus, council officers are people too and get upset at social media rants that impugn their professionalism

Following on from the publication of a Newcastle Council news release about progress on Killingworth Road, Parklands Cllrs Pauline Allen and Robin Ashby met the officer overseeing the project to discuss further delays in re-opening "After a long and in part confidential discussion, we have to conclude that most of the delays are not the fault of the Council” they have concluded. “The law concerning utilities and highways (the New Roads and Streetworks Act) means the Council ...had to commission Northern Gas Networks (NGN) to do the work, but had no control over their day to day working. “Officers are extremely disappointed that NGN did not complete their work until December 2018, when it was initially meant to be finished by November 2017, and that there is still some exposed pipework on the site. “What was supposed to precede the replacement of the Metro bridge by Nexus actually started afterwards, and the bridge project was incomplete although trains were able to run again. “It was always the plan that the Council would need 3 months to complete their work after NGN left the site, but they have also to do extra unplanned structural construction work on the railway bridge, as this was not completed by the contractors employed by NGN. There have also been liaison issues with North Tyneside Council who have also been carrying out their own works to the north of the Metro line. “The current intention is for Killingworth Road to open Southbound mid May and then to open both ways in July. “The Council has been consulting independent safety experts about reopening Salters' Bridge, which because it’s currently closed under a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order must re-open as soon as it’s safe to do so. Monitoring of the impact on Gosforth Garden Village of traffic using it will be undertaken, and if justified consultation undertaken with residents about the longer term. “We know all the delays are extremely frustrating for residents and have urged officers to make sure that there is no further slippage. They seem quite confident that once all the issues have been resolved with other parties, the works for which they are responsible should go along smoothly and to the new timetable.”

Recently Parklands Cllrs received a complaint about coaches that were picking up, or dropping off, youngsters from Gosforth Academy. The coaches were causing problems for residents of Knightsbridge Court, due to noise and pollution from engines left running. Following discussions with the Academy we can announce that from now on coaches will not park by the Academy. Between 11pm and 6am coaches will park at Regent Centre, as an agreement has been reached with Nexus. And outside of those hours coaches will be parked at Gosforth Junior High as there is more space for parking there.
We're pleased that Gosforth Academy have worked with us on this issue and come up with this solution. We're also grateful to Nexus for allowing Regent Centre to be used by the coaches.
Cllr Pauline Allen
