Can you guess the number one reason why Brits quit smoking?
Well people mainly quit smoking for either health or cost reasons. And it’s the health benefits of quitting that appeals to people more than the cost saving.
Tobacco increases the risk of heart disease, strokes, pneumonia and cancer. The number of adults smoking in the UK has fallen by almost three million compared to ten years ago.
... Despite this, smoking is linked to almost 500,000 hospital admissions and nearly 80,000 deaths in England alone.
The Oral Health Foundation polled almost 500 smokers and found that two in three (66%) who plan to go smoke-free do so in a bid to improve their overall health.1 The study reveals more than twice as many smokers’ plan to quit to improve their health rather than because of the financial impact of smoking.
Dr Nigel Carter OBE, Chief Executive of the Oral Health Foundation, says: “We are delighted with these new figures. The number of people smoking in the UK continues to decline and we are getting closer to becoming a smoke-free population.
‘’Quitting smoking can be extremely difficult so the motivation for doing so must be strong. Wanting to improve our own health is a positive and aspirational choice. Little wonder why it is the driving force behind many of those who plan to stop smoking.”

So, finally the winter ❄️ is fully upon us. This can be a difficult time for someone who suffers from sensitive teeth. Hot drinks and cold air don’t go hand-in-hand. Even taking a short breath of cold weather can hurt some people. Causes of having sensitive teeth 🦷 include acid erosion, gum disease/gum recession, toothbrush abrasion and more.
Aside from the traditions of building snowmen ☃️ and sipping hot cocoa by a cozy fire ☕️, we’ve come up with some tips on how to battl...e sensitive teeth during this wonderful holiday season:
✅ Reduce your intake of acidic foods – This can really help reduce sensitivity in your teeth. Acidic foods/drinks like citrus fruits, fizzy drinks (including the Diet/Zero Calorie verions) are common culprits of acid erosion damage to the enamel of your tooth. ✅ Change to Gentle brushing technique – Even brushing too hard can cause sensitivity so make sure you are using the right amount of pressure and the correct technique. Ask your dentist/hygienist about this for assistance. ✅ Visit your dentist on a regular basis – Having excellent oral care habits is not enough. You need to visit a dentist regularly in order to have a cleaning and check-up. There may be some cahirside treatments like composite bonding that may help to reduce your dental sensitivity. ✅ Use toothpaste for sensitive teeth – A good option is Sensodyne. Ingredients in Sensodyne toothpaste will help alleviate pain and protect your teeth. If you don’t have toothpaste for sensitive teeth, please stop by for a check-up and we will give you some.
