Did you know that there are theories that "Pirate Talk" is actually just an exaggerated West Country accent? This could be down to the Dorset born actor, Robert Newton. He played Black Beard in the 1952 film 'Blackbeard the Pirate' and Long John Silver in 'Treasure Island' released in 1950, which are both Disney films.
In films before this, such as the 1934 'Treasure Island', there's no pirate lingo apart from one which is "Yarrrr" and this could have been the first time it was heard.
This is only one of the many theories, what's yours? ☠️

It’s a little breezy here today. If you’re planning to visit us while we have heavy winds, we recommend phoning ahead to check that HMS Trincomalee is open. Sometimes to keep our visitors safe we have to close the ship, the quayside will still be open as normal.
Sorry for any inconvenience.

This week, Watsons Removals Ltd from Darlington were kind enough to offer their help, free of charge, to move some huge lengths of rope out of the ship’s hold. The ship is being laser scanned by Wessex Archaeology this week and the results of the scanning will enable them to make very accurate drawings of the ship and 3d images of the interiors. The rope in the hold was in the way of the laser scanning but it was also useful to get it out so our Ship Keepers can access and clean the area.

Tributes to mark the Battle of Amiens today

User

Wow! I had wanted to visit her for ages to see HMS Trincomalee - a ship as beautifully preserved as her counterpart HMS Victory at Portsmouth. Friendly staff - a day out to be highly recommended.

User

Well worth visiting part of our history let keep our history by support our heritage .

User

We went yesterday and thought it was very good lots to do for the kids.pleasantly surprised by how much there was to see and do and staff were very knowligable on their history.and there was gun and a canon demonstration.

User

We really enjoyed ourselves and had a great time, especially the fighting ships exhibit! Learning about all the history and being taken back in time was fab. The HMS Trincomalee was marvellous to explore. Plenty of thing's for the kids to do and see as well. We will definitely be going back again.

User

We just spent a brilliant 4 hours here with children aged between 4 - 8. They learnt so much!! Just the right amount of things to do and things to read.

The staff were very friendly. The whole place was clean.

User

We had a fab time with our little boy William. Thanks to all the guys who work there. A big shout out to Lee who made my boys day with a photo following the weapons demonstration. Thanks

User

Museum is very much underrated, I was pleasantly surprised how good it is.

I never allowed enough time for visit & rushed it a little.

I never had time to view the presentations which occurr at various times during the day.

The main exhibit in the dock is HMS Trincomalee, restored to mint condition, amazing since it was built in 1817

User

Hadn’t been to Hartlepool before but came to try the museum. We weren’t disappointed - great family day out and reasonably priced. We were there nearly 4 hours & could’ve stayed longer but 4pm close in winter season.

User

Had a fab family day yesterday the kids loved it and the weapons demo was excellent, the whole experience was really intresting

User

Great day out. Both educational and fun for children. Reasonably priced. Helpful and informative staff. The way the museum is set out really helps to bring the history to life.

My only quibble would be that the men's toilets on the dockside were in a very sorry state considering how early we visited and how few visitors were on site.

User

Great day out, lots to see . Only niggle was that some of the displays could have been better lit for us with aged eyesight .

User

Great day out for all the family, would recommend it to everyone

User

First time my 2 year old went here and he really enjoyed wanted to walk all over and really interested in everything he looked at definately going to be coming back with him during the summer.

User

Fabulous day out, wasn't sure my girls (7 & 4) would be enjoy it but they loved; the ship, the houses & shops & the guns. So good they demanded to go again before the holiday was over.

User

Fab day out at the historic quay and every member of staff we came into contact with was so helpful, couldn’t do enough for us. Can’t wait to come back soon!

User

Excellent displays, informative and interesting. Four hours just sped by and at no time did I suffer my usual info-overload. Congratulations on a brilliant historical site.

User

An excellent day out, plenty to see and do, informative and interesting as well as being good value. Well worth visiting.

User

A must visit for Patrick O'Brian (Master and Commander) and C.S.Forester fans. The museum is home to HMS Tricomalee an actual Royal Navy Frigate built in 1817 - too late for the Napoleonic wars by just a few years but nevertheless an example of the type of warship depicted in the above novels and sailed by some of the Royal Navy's greatest heroes. Also gives an excellent guided tour for those unfamiliar with life in the Royal Navy in the Napoleonic era.

User

I visited the museum a number of times when it was the Hartlepool Historic Quay. The exhibits remained the same for decades, and consequently many of them were in a state of disrepair.

Since becoming the Royal Navy Museum, none of the shabby old exhibits have been improved, and the entry cost is now higher than it ever was.

The staff are friendly enough, but the museum itself is in dire need of some refurbishment. I recommend visiting the adjoining Museum of Hartlepool instead, which is much better and free to enter.
