About Newcastle Castle

The Castle Keep & Black Gate - Newcastle's most historic buildings - recently reopened following a Heritage Lottery funded regeneration.

Newcastle Castle Description

Standing on the site of the original 'New Castle' which gave the city its name, the Castle Keep and its medieval gatehouse the Black Gate are open daily and host a range of special events.

This was no baron's stately home. The Castle was a grim symbol of royal authority where armies gathered and criminals were imprisoned and executed.

Explore the anicent passageways and chambers; discover the hidden stories of its inhabitants, and take in the impressive views from the rooftop across the city and the River Tyne.

Join SUSPECTproductions in The Black Gate (2nd floor) for an exciting murder mystery picnic. They provide the tables – you bring your own food and drinks! See if you can work out whodunnit.
‘Not The Spam Again’ is set at a concert party in May 1945 to celebrate VE Day. Everything’s fine for a bit until iniquitous homicide inconveniently interrupts proceedings.

You may know that the Chapel in the Keep was once a beer cellar, but did you know that the Keep once held an ice house? In the late 1700s, the Pit Room, located just off the Gaol had its floor dug out for this purpose.

Never settling for being merely the Castle that gave Newcastle Upon Tyne its name, Newcastle Castle is one of the most unique cultural venues you could wish to spend time in, right in the Heart of the City. We're showcasing a screening of 'Beetlejuice,' on Thursday 11th October, with tickets priced at just £9.
Steeped in history, the iconic Newcastle Castle is an incredible visitor attraction through the day, and by night transforms into an inspiring cinema etc.
'Beetlejuic...e, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.' In this classic Tim Burton film, Michael Keaton stars as Betelgeuse, a ghost who attempts to help a recently deceased couple drive the new residents out of their old home. Tickets for this event are £9 and go on sale on Monday 27th August at midday.
Open 7-days per week from 10am until 5pm, you can visit the family-friendly historic attraction, located in Newcastle city centre, to reveal the story of how Newcastle began, the reason the City got its name and to walk in the steps of the people who lived and died in the shadow of Newcastle Castle. Steeped in history this imposing Norman fortress, is a rugged reminder of Northern England's turbulent history.
Please note:
This film screening takes place in the Great Hall of Newcastle Castle Keep which is unfortunately inaccessible to wheelchair users. Doors will open at approximately 6pm, with the film starting at 6.30pm.
The Keep is a Scheduled Ancient Monument without any central heating, so therefore has a tendency to get quite cold. However, what it lacks in warmth, it certainly makes up for in atmosphere! The Great Hall is also only accessible via a steep flight of spiral stairs.
Therefore, we recommend that you wear suitable clothing and footwear.
There are no toilet facilities within the Keep itself, so please use toilets at The Bridge Hotel across the street should you need the toilet.
Reasonably priced refreshments will be available for all your sweets and drink needs. We aren’t a licensed venue, so for this event there will be no sale of alcohol.
As we’re nice people, we don’t mind our attendees bringing in their own refreshments or drinks, but please consider that anything you spend with us help us to ‘Keep the Castle going’. If you do bring your own refreshments, we simply ask that you are respectful of the venue and other customers and tidy up anything you’ve brought before leaving.

What a brilliant day we had. The tour guide aimed the facts perfectly for everyone. My 6 year old daughter, 11 year old son and me found the tour informative, entertaining and gruesome enough to hold the children’s attention. After the tour we went for lunch before exploring the castle. The views from the top are breathtaking. The tower itself was interesting and we enjoyed finding all the little rooms and facts.

User

We went Friday afternoon and it was brilliant staff were very helpful. I learnt a lot and loved the beautiful views from the top. Well worth it x

User

User

Loved visiting the castle keep and the black gate. The views from the top of the castle were amazing. Staff were very friendly and it was well priced for the experience. Newcastle is a very nice city to visit I would highly recommend visiting the city especially the Castle.

User

It was incredible ... a life time experience for me visiting the castle that reflects the ancient Newcastle....... It has so many ins and outs ... I bet you are gonna enjoy if you are adventurous and you love history .....

User

I have lived in Newcastle all of my sixty two years, and today was my first visit to Newcastle Keep. What an interesting morning I had! The view from the roof was phenomenal!

User

Had no idea it was so large inside and lots of wonderful places to explore in this very characterful and informative Castle & Keep. An evocative experience full of flavour of The North and with depth of history . Fascinating!

User

Had a great tour at the keep and gate house loved the history and well preserved castle keep up the good work!! And the people working there are very polite and helpfull thanks for that.

User

Great place to visit. Excellent city skyline views from the roof. I would not say the 99 stairs climbing (with little rests) is very toddler-friendly, so it was a big pressure on me to keep him safe, but he loved the experience. It was a big service with bell ringing at St Nicolas Cathedral next to the Black Gate, which created even more impressive atmosphere.

User

Fantastic!

Fantastic day out for the kids, they loved it as did I.

User

Can’t believe I’ve lived in the north east for 34 years and Newcastle for the last 4 and never been here! Loved it!

User

Can't believe I have passed this place hundreds of times and not realised how amazing it is. The history is informative and fun and the Keep is well worth a visit, like a rabbit warren with tunnels and rooms at every turn. The stairs are hard work but the views at the top are the best you'll ever see of Newcastle and beyond! And the lads running it are very friendly and helpful.

User

A must see for any visitor to Newcastle, the view from the roof is amazing. I live here and have been many times, we love to show our castle to visiting friends and family.

User

The member of staff at the ticket desk was very polite, and steered me in the direction of a family ticket that was cheaper even tho it would bring in less cash for the exhibit - great customer focus. There is a great exhibition in the gatehouse which tells you a lot of the castles history, whilst the castle itself provides a fantastic view over the city and the various Tyne Bridges, as long as you have a head for heights and don’t mind a 100+ climb up medieval steps. All in all, a great morning out.
