Newcastle Cathedral Description

Sadly after much consideration we have felt it necessary to close the Cathedral for the time being.

We are sorry if this is an inconvenience for you and assure you that we are ready and waiting to find the right way to reopen the Cathedral to visitors and for public worship as soon as we receive any appropriate advice from Public Health England.

In the meantime, further information and support is available via our website: www. newcastlecathedral.org. uk

We continue to pray for the good health of all our community and give thanks to all those who work so hard to care for us in such unprecedented times.

Read the Dean's statement in full here: https://newcastlecathedral.org. uk /coronavirus-a-statement-from-the-dean-of-newcastle /

The Cathedral staff are working at this very moment to prepare prayerful resources to be made available each day. If you can, please consult the Cathedral website and subscribe for email updates: https://newcastlecathedral.org. uk /

For over 900 years a house of worship has graced the heart of the city of Newcastle. Situated in historic ‘old’ Newcastle, Newcastle Cathedral stands as a beacon of hope for everyone visiting, working and living in and around the city: an open place of sanctuary, hospitality, welcome and ...worship for all those who wish to make it their home.
Newcastle Cathedral is a remarkable building with a rich history and heritage. It is packed with monuments, ledger (tomb) stones and stained glass windows each telling stories of the real Newcastle and its fascinating people: magnificent testimonies to our glorious (and not so glorious) past and therefore inspiration for its future.
This is an extremely exciting time to be part of Newcastle Cathedral’s future as it progresses with its ambitious £6 million Heritage Lottery Funded Common Ground in Sacred Space project to transform the nave, renew visitor facilities and reshape external spaces. The work will reclaim the Cathedral’s historic role within the community, meeting the needs of new and diverse audiences including the marginalised and vulnerable, residents and tourists, and will ensure the Cathedral’s sustainability for many decades to come.

A national scheme to conserve and repair England’s cathedrals, from which Newcastle Cathedral was awarded a total of £180,572 across two projects, has significantly reduced immediate risks, a report published today said. Newcastle Cathedral’s grants have helped to secure the roof of the Thomlinson Library, a 1736 extension to the Cathedral by James Gibbs and enabled investigation of the damp in the Cathedral’s 14th century crypt and east end and its causes and remedies. All are very welcome to attend this free event.
Newcastle Pride 2018 runs over three consecutive days from July 20th - 22nd.

On Thursday 12th July join us for Choral Evensong, led by the visiting choir from Selwyn College, Cambridge. A much loved service in the traditional language of the Book of Common Prayer, with a beautiful choral setting, psalms, canticles, anthem, and congregational hymns. Please come and sit in the Quire (the seats nearest the High Altar) where the service sheets and hymn books may be found – or if you prefer simply to listen, you are very welcome to sit in the pews.

We are delighted to welcome the Choir of Selwyn College Cambridge as part of their North of England and Scotland Tour. The Choir will sing at Newcastle Cathedral's Choral Evensong at 5:30pm on Thursday 12th July.
All welcome to attend and admission is free.
Selwyn College Chapel Choir has led worship in the College Chapel since its foundation in the last decade of the nineteenth century. For the first two-thirds of the twentieth century, the all-male choir of undergraduates w...as directed by the Organ Scholars, and sang daily Choral Evensong. For occasional larger works, the men borrowed sopranos and altos from Newnham College, the women's College across the road from Selwyn.
The mixed choir, formed in 1976 with the admission of women to Selwyn, now consists of up to twenty-eight singers, Choral Scholars (called Choral Exhibitioners) and volunteers, and the choir's link with Newnham continues to the present day.
Most of the choir members are undergraduates or graduates at Selwyn or Newnham, with a few volunteers from other colleges, and they read a variety of subjects including Music, English, Natural Sciences, and Engineering. The choir is conducted by the Director of Music, who is assisted by two Organ Scholars, who are normally undergraduates at Selwyn.
During the year, the Choir of Selwyn College Cambridge makes regular appearances in concerts and services throughout the UK, recently including Choral Evensong in St Paul's, Durham, Winchester, Ely, and Norwich Cathedrals, St George's Chapel Windsor, and Westminster Abbey, as well as concerts in London, Manchester, Kent, Edinburgh, and Hexham.
The Choir also undertakes an annual tour (usually international) in the summer (normally in July, but sometimes in September). Recent destinations have included New Zealand, the USA, Israel and Palestine, Canada, Scotland, Ireland, and much of mainland Europe.

We've recently relocated from Essex to the north east and have been delighted to discover Newcastle Cathedral. My son Fionnbharr has moved from Brentwood Cathedral Choristers to Newcastle Choristers which means I get to admire the amazing stained glass windows and ornate interior regularly whilst listening to the voices of angels.

An architectural gem and a landmark in the city by virtue of the magnificent lantern tower, St Nicholas welcomes visitors from all over the word yet is often overlooked by local people. Dating mainly from the 14th and 15th centuries the cathedral is a treasury of stained glass windows (around 50 of them), brass and marble memorials, ledger stones (in the floor) and some magnificent wood carving in the choir and on the rood screen. There's also a cafe - The Dog Leap Cafe - offering great food and drink. So come visit, you won't be disappointed.

User

A wonderful Spiritual place and a peaceful haven in the centre of a bustling city. The stain glass is exquisite . We there for the Ordination of a group of Priests and found that the acoustics were excellent.

User

. They say 'we seek to make God's love real to all who come here, and to serve them in His name ' They do this well. A small cathedral overflowing with the love of God. You are always warmly welcomed by clergy and cathedral staff. The atmosphere combines spirituality and peacefulness making it an easy place to rest a while with your thoughts or pray. You can light a candle and enjoy a coffee in the Lantern cafe. .......and when I leave it is with Christ's peace in my mind and his joy in my heart....a precious gem
