“I’m delighted to be taking on the role of Chair of this independent charity.
“It’s an exciting new chapter in the City’s history as the parks play a vital role in the social and economic wellbeing of our communities. I look forward to working with the Trustees, the team, the city and many other stakeholders to take forward this innovative new initiative.”
Jim Beirne MBE is the founding Chair of Newcastle Parks Trust.

We've been speaking to businesses about kittiwakes getting caught in nets on quayside buildings - and they've pledged to act. Derek Hilton-Brown, our ecology officer explains all.
Like many of you, we've seen reports on social media over the weekend of kittiwakes caught in netting on buildings on the Quayside. We are equally concerned and saddened. We take great care to ensure the protection of Kittiwakes and other wildlife in Newcastle. We thought you should know that one of our officers has been today to visually inspect the buildings concerned and was not able to identify any birds in distress. Whilst we do not own the buildings concerned, we can r...emind businesses that they are responsible for ensuring appropriate permissions are in place for netting, that it is secure and their responsibility not to put any birds at unnecessary risk. We also acknowledge that businesses have a responsibility to protect public health. Tomorrow we will visit the affected premises on the Quayside and impress upon owners public concerns. We would like to thank those who have brought this matter to our attention.
