Happy #ThrowbackThursday! Here's a great photo of a Wardair Boeing 747, a regular at Newcastle Airport in the 1980s. Does anyone remember Wardair or seeing this aircraft? ✈️ Many thanks to Ian Gregory for sending this in, taken by his late father.

The airport is approaching its busiest time of year and we would like to remind our regular passengers who are taking short haul flights to arrive in plenty of time to pass through security and get to their boarding gate on time.

Hubby and I travelled with our two autistic children on 13th June, the Jet2 staff were excellent and explained about the autism passport and how we could be fast tracked through security due to the kids having problems with queues.

I'm not sure if there was an issue that morning but we actually waited longer than the other passengers in the long queue due to the airline staff walking straight to the front, meaning we had to wait for them!

The fast track system didn't work for us I'm afraid. The kids didn't understand how all the staff were walking straight in front of them.

If your to offer this system it needs urgent tweaking.

Wasn't a great start to our holidays although everything after that was fine.

Having to pass through the duty free to get to the departure lounge ruined my weekend. I am allergic to perfumes yet was forced to walk through something like 20 yards of lung damaging poison.

I know I am not the only person that suffers like this and hope someone from the airport reads this and changes the walk through.

User

after using the airport for many years this last week it was dreadful, when checking in i requested assistance for disabled husband,i was offered a wheelchair and asked if i could push it myself, with hand luggage too, the toilets were filthy ,it stunk, when we got through to departures everywhere was shut except burger king whom charged £5.50 for tea n coffee.we were told we would be put on plain first but no we were last and had to stand in long queue. disabled hubby found quite difficult.

User

We use Newcastle Airport up to 3 times a year (if not more) and we have just arrived off our holidays tonight and my sons £600 pram was chucked onto the conveyer belt, it then bounced off at luggage collection and when we finally got it back it was missing a wheel!! We put the pram on at the plane stairs with 4 wheels at Faro! No one would go and have a look on the plane for us we were just told to put a claim in. I’m disgusted. No other airport puts prams on the belts. Nice end to the holiday

Our first flights to and from Newcastle airport to Dubai over the last week. One big plus point was the large and extensive duty free shopping area for outbound travellers which, to be fair, is very good. However, this airport is seriously let down by a) its parking facilities - we stayed in medium term which is open to the elements and a good walk to the terminal over uneven footpaths and no obvious bus transfer = likelihood of getting very wet in the rain etc. b) Passport control on the return trip was a joke, ages stood in long queues on steps / broken down escalator c) Baggage carousel and reclaim was extremely slow and looked like it hadnt been updated since the 70s.

If this airport wants to expand or even retain the prestigious Emirates route to Dubai, a lot needs to be done and quickly. I wont be returning in a hurry.

Flew in from Larnaca Sunday morning and it was an absolute nightmare at passport control, not sure how many planes all landed at the same time but the queues were horrendous with people queueing up right down the corridor. I am all for change if it's for the better but this new system is really letting the airport down. I fly every couple of months and I've never seen anything like this at any other airport, if this was to happen again I would seriously consider using another airport, I get quite panicky in queues and this has really put me off. I heard other people saying how bad it was, I can't imagine what it will be like in six week holiday. As for the family only lane, I think you need to clarify what you mean by this. If it's a mum/Dad or Nan/granddad arriving with children then yeah that's good but I watched 7 people go through with one child of about 10 all laughing and joking about not having to queue when there were some elderly passengers having to wait in these queues. Hopefully this queueing system will get quicker as time goes on.

User

Disappointed. Arrived back from Palma with an 11 month old and a 2.5yr old. Despite the pushchairs being loaded last in Palma as taken to the gate, the pushchairs came off last and came about 25 minutes after the bags. Trying to keep an eye on the 2.5yr old whilst carrying the 11 month old isn’t easy especially after the flight. I don’t mind waiting for the bags but having the ability to put the children into the pushchair whilst waiting so they are able to sit would be more preferable. I was not the only parent to be saying the same thing.

User

personally i wouldnt even rate last nights service one star . We arrived a little later than scheduled on the Tui flight from Heraklion at about 1am and it was all down hill from there , Had to wait on the plane for stairs then coaches . The escalator wasn,t working and passport control was an absolute joke , I have passed through Newcastle many times without a problem and even mentioned to people we met on holiday that Newcastle Airport was usually good . Obviously not any more judging by the comments on here. The staff were very unwelcoming as were the signs not to abuse staff , also there appeared to be more security men than usual but no one actually doing anything to help the situation .

Of course no one likes working nights , i do them myself but you have to be professional.

I thought after waiting an hour already our bags would be ready and waiting for us , how wrong i was, there were no signs to let us know where our bags were and by the time we got them we had taken 2 hours to get to our taxi so of course we had to pay extra for the drivers time such a shame to be met with this at our home airport . I have travelled to 3rd world countries that have done a better job .

User

You might want to think up a better system for parents going through security alone with a young child. Having to pry my child off me and hand him, screaming, to a complete stranger isn't exactly a nice way to travel. And having the staff seem annoyed that I didn't bring a buggy or want to put my son down because he was upset didn't help matters. I know you've a job to do but there must be a better way to do it.

User

Wow, international airport?!!! Are you sure? Check in for a flight at 18:15 on a Saturday night expecting to be able to get something to eat, not much to expect from an International airport isn’t it? No restaurants open, you can eat a £5.45 pint but no hot food as they are all shut, even Burger King!!! What an absolute joke this place is. Spend as little time as you possibly can in this place

User

We travelled from Fuerteventura last night, arriving at midnight, baggage took about 25/30 mins to appear on the belt after about 15mins of waiting a lady announced over the tannoy that they were having ‘operational’ problems, which left a very unhappy fleet of passengers, slowly but surely the bags began to filter into the belt.. However, I was absolutely appalled that after landing we waited 1hr and 15mins before my disabled 3yr old’s pushchair and walking frame appeared.

I’d like to add that it was all of the people who needed special assistance that were waiting around until 1:15am for wheelchairs and walking aids - it’s disgraceful...

Although we didn’t use the assistance service that is offered as my daughter is still small for her age and is able to be carried and

I do understand and appreciate that things can’t run smoothly 100% of the time you would expect that “priority” items such as these aids and pushchairs would be the first to come off the plane...

User

I used to like it. But.. Why do I have to smell cigarettes everytime I walk it. Is it too difficulf to make dedicated area for people who like this sh*t but not just next to every door? Why do I have to wait almost 1h for my suitcase? This is not busy airport. Why people need to block the whole way out when the come out via arrival door like they are the most important?

User

I like the location but that's it.

From the car park to take off it is all about taking money off the passengers. Walk through security straight into a shopping mall. Nowhere to sit unless you are prepared to be ripped off for food and drink.

Coming back and well over 30 minutes to get through passport control. Landing to car park almost one hour. Passport worked on e passport machines at 1400hrs in Holland but not at 1700hrs in Newcastle. A one hour flight saw me become a man without a country eh?

User

I have spent two days trying to contact ‘someone’...’anyone’ at the airport. An automated voice tells me that told no one is available and that I should leave my name and contact number and they will get in touch... I am number 1 in the queue. No one contacts me. I even tried the operator and the automated answer was that they were not available. I have emailed and sent a message via Messenger but no response except standard ‘thank you for your communication’.

The reason I am trying to contact them is because after checking In my granddaughter’s case has gone missing and did not arrive at Dalaman. I believe that a rep from the company they booked the holiday also tried to contact the airport with no success.

So overall I think I give this airport 0/10 for customer service.

User

I had a package holiday with Jet2 and we landed last night at 12.50am and because Newcastle airport don’t want to pay staff at this time we was sat on the plane until 1.30am this is absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable if there is more than 1 plane coming into land why have 4 staff 2 on buses and 2 on ambulance duty! You guys seriously need to get your act together this isn’t good enough!

User

Flew in for the second time 5 weeks and both times took over an hour to get through. Lack of baggage handlers and passport control people. One of the most expensive airports to use too.

They seriously need to look at the how the place is run, they know when it’s going to be busy and therefore extra staff will be needed! Or you’d hope they would!

I’m flying out again next week but I won’t be flying back in to this shambles for a third time, I’ll use Edinburgh instead!

User

Flew from Faro to Newcastle yesterday and went through passport control and it was an absolute nightmare. There were 2 queues one didn’t have a sign on and the other said e passports and under 12’s. we chose the queue with no sign but somehow ended up in the other queue and were told this is for children only. The signs were not clear and the barriers were incorrectly placed. we were forced to move over to the E-passport queue (I know I was confused too!) which by this time was so long as another flight had turned up then the e-passport machine wouldn’t pick up my passport so this really rude man working there told everyone who’s passport wasn’t being picked up to move over to another queue to queue again. It was a sham. I’ve flown to the USA and Spain and used the e-passport systems there which were both fine. Newcastle you need to make your signs clearer and make sure your machines work properly before opening them and forcing people to use them. Also the man working here was so rude to several people it was totally uncalled for so I hope this man gets pulled up on his behaviour.

After cancellation of one of our KLM flights from JFK and stuck in Amsterdam for 10 hrs, followed by two further FlyBe flights via Southampton, we were aware than our luggage had not accompanied us but were relieved to be advised by one of the attendants at Newcastle that it was being stored at the Long Distance Arrivals and someone would deliver it to us out on the main concourse. Another couple who had travelled from the USA were with us. After 45 minutes, and following more than one enquiry, our luggage was wheeled to us by a lady who apologised explaining that "someone" was supposed to have dealt with it.

At nearly 9 o'clock at night and around 26 hrs from leaving our hotel, with two exhausted children, I was appalled by the bad attitude from one member of staff (he should rethink his career choice) and total lack of efficiency at delivering six bags from a known storage area to those weary people awaiting them.

User

After a lovely holiday getting off the plane at this airport is a nightmare every time. Standing in a massive massive queue for security which goes so slowly up the stairs that they take the folks with young kids forward. And then wham! Round the corner the masses of people crawling round the sheep folds. The airport management should get themselves down here and sort it! It’s disgraceful. Bad management no excuses
