We are a very successful School with a long and prestigious history. English has been taught at undergraduate level at Newcastle University for over a hundred years. We attract high quality students and our graduates are outstanding (please see our video interviews with alumni).

With colleagues in Modern Languages and Education, Communication and Language Sciences we constitute the Centre for Research in Language and Linguistic Sciences (CRiLLS), one of the largest groupings of linguists in Europe.

The School offers some of the most diverse and flexible degrees in the country. In addition to English Language and Linguistics, we teach creative writing, film-making and film history, drama and children's literature as well as literature from the Renaissance to the twenty-first century.

We are home to the Newcastle Centre for the Literary Arts (NCLA), which brings internationally renowned writers to Newcastle, organizing readings and events that are open to our students and the general public.

We work with several Partners who support assessed work experience placements.

We also work closely with alumni and our award-winning Careers Service to enhance the employability of our students.

We have excellent resources which include: The Robinson Library (awarded the government's Charter Mark five times) and its unique Special Collections, Culture Lab, The Catherine Cookson Archive of Tyneside and Northumbrian Dialect.

Last, but certainly not least, we are based in the heart of a wonderful city!

Students & staff, working in partnership with Hotspur Primary School, developed a creative arts project based on the life of C17 Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle: Cavendish wrote one of the first pieces of scifi, The Blazing World, which explores space travel, utopian thinking, ecocritical awareness, and scientific inventions. Our students worked with the Hotspur Primary students to develop a steampunked C17 pageant, which emphasised environmental & anthropogenic con...cerns.
The students researched animals in their family groups, and made pledges to the environment, which they presented at the pageant (including a flashmob) – all under the watchful eye of Cavendish, who made a grand entrance to thank the participants. Our students have the chance to do this kind of outreach work during their degrees: vital experience of creative arts practice, educational work, leadership opportunities & community engagement. Thx to all who took part and Dr Stacy Gillis for leading!
