Where it all began.
My great grandfather David James Wood born 2nd November 1869 in Whitby.
In the 1891 Census David and Martha Wood nee Harland were living in Kiln Yard at the foot of the famous 199 steps, prior to this David and Martha lived at the top of Henrietta Street in a house that because of the subsidence of the cliff the house was leaning so badly they eventually had to move to Kiln Yard as the top floor of the property on Henrietta Street had to be removed due to ...the instability of the building.
They ran a small fish business curing herrings, after the cleaning and brining of the herrings they would be hung to dry and ready for the cold smoking process, David would travel to the local sawmill with his pony and trap pulled by Polly his pony to collect oak shavings and sawdust in preparation to set the smoking fires for the kipper house.
As well as curing the herring they would boil and sell crabs and the winkles they gathered from the scaur, they eventually bought the first family shop on Sandgate which is still in business today although not with our family.
And the rest as they say is history.
