Often in June the Insitute has hosted a coal carrying model railway exhibition. This cannot happen this year with the builders in. However the event is happening. It is taking place at Beamish Museum this Saturday and Sunday as part of their Old King Coal Festival. http://www.beamish.org.uk/events/old-king -coal-2019/

Today marks the 180th anniversary of the St Hilda's Pit Head disaster. A dreadful explosion took place at the St. Hilda pit claiming the lives of 51 men and boys, the youngest only nine years old. 39 families lost a number of members, 19 women were widowed and 44 children left fatherless.
The explosion happened two miles west of the shaft sometime between 8am and 9am with smoke and coals seen emanating from the shaft. Many away from the direct explosion suffocated due to ‘cho...ke damp’ (a mixture of nitrogen and CO2). An eyewitness described conditions underground were ‘as that of the grave itself’. Several rescuers were also killed by the effects of damp.
An inquest returned a verdict of 'accidental death' caused by a candle in a disused part of the mine igniting impure gas, though this was questioned as candles were often used and the mine was considered usually safe.

This is worth posting, I went along to last night's talk and it was fascinating. Points to note: they have full planning permission for the mine given unanimously by Cumbria county. Most of the activity will be undersea. The project will not be power station coal but a very different and specialised coal ideal for steel making for which the market remains enormous. And Tyneside will see a lot of it. Six trains a day scheduled through the Tyne Valley from 2021 for its shipment and a fair amount of rail upgrading promised. I wish it well. https://www.westcumbriamining.com/…/WCM -Project-Update-Pres…

Recently NEIMME has been receiving in several tranches material donated by Mrs Brooks, the wife of Philip Brooks the Wylam councillor and railway historian. Much of this material has been chosen for its relevance to NEIMME interests. The selections has included some four library card cabinets of UK monochrome railway prints. We believe the collection was first assembed by E. E. Smith of Corbridge and then acquired by Philip. A proportion of the material is of direct North Eas...t interest but the coverage is also national. Much but not all comes from photographic lists like the Ken Nunn collection, a schema which was very popular with enthusiasts for decades. But there is clearly E. E. Smith's own work and significant examples offer correspondence written to him. Are you a volunteer who would like to catalogue this? No timeline but it will take some time. Expert guidance will be available. This one image is a good example. Location is the Guest Keen and Nettlefords East Moors Steelworks, Cardiff. 0-4-0T number 5, a chunky powerful beast. L&GRP on the reverse stands for Locomotive and General Railway Photographs. See https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk /…/215cfb2b-0546-4… .The engine was one of a very small class but they have been given worldwide exposure through Hornby Railways making a model using all sorts of guises.
