Volunteer of the Year once again goes to Penzance Tennis Club!
At the recent Tennis Cornwall AGM, Penzance Tennis Club Chair Trevor Newborn, was declared the winner of the Cornwall LTA’s ‘Volunteer of the Year Award 2018’. Tennis Cornwall Chair Sue Eames, who presented the Award said:
“Trevor has worked tirelessly for Penzance Tennis Club for well over 15 years, first in the role of Treasurer and for the last 8 years, as Chair. He was the driving force behind obtaining lotter...y funding for the new clubhouse, providing a fantastic facility that has since attracted a significant number of new players. He has also been instrumental in fund raising for the Penzance Tennis Outreach Programme, which has now delivered free tennis to over 1000 children in the local community! More recently he has overcome issues to install new floodlights on the rear tarmac courts as well as oversee the resurfacing on these courts, plus the rejuvenation of the four main artificial grass courts. He has even found time to help a nearby club with their application for floodlights!”
It doesn’t stop there as Trevor and the fund raising committee now have the huge task of raising funds to completely resurface the four artificial grass courts.
Congratulations Trevor!

Court Renewal Fund Launch
Last night saw the formal kick off for the recently formed “Court Renewal Fund” committee. The time has nearly come where the four artificial court surfaces need to be renewed and with such a huge cost we need to start raising much needed funds! The court renewal fund raising gauge (see photo), kindly supplied by Tricia Smith and Julian Little, was also put to the test during the meeting!
The committee has already been busy with various activities in...cluding arranging the recent Christmas Quiz Night, kindly organised by Richard Hosking and the New Year's Day Fun Tournament organised by Tricia Smith. Both events raised just over £200!
Committee member Valda Mossman dropped in the first ball representing the first £100 and new committee member Dawn Roberts added another to take the level up to the £200 mark. Many new ideas were forthcoming to set the ball rolling so keep an eye out for what’s coming up (newsletter, social media and notice board) and please support these future events. If you have any ideas or would like to join this sub committee please speak to any of the committee members namely, Tricia Smith, Dave Forrest, Sue Nash, Valda Mossman and Dawn Roberts.

2019 NEW YEAR’S DAY FUN TOURNAMENT 🎉🎾🎉🎾
Our 2019 year started well with a fun tournament at Penzance Tennis Club. 20 players registered, and play started soon after 11 am. After each timed round, players moved with winners splitting up and moving down a court, and losers moving up a court and splitting up. This meant most players mixed around quite well, with each player keeping their own score as individuals.
The weather was ideal, with no wind, no sun, no rain, and fairl...y mild for January. After 4 timed rounds we stopped for lunch, everyone had brought sandwiches and food to share, as the cafe was closed. Tea and coffee was available for those who wanted to make their own hot drink.
There was a clear winner after 5 rounds, and congratulations to Elaine Trethowan who won with 26 points. Three players had 24 points each, Suzie Sinclair, Tomasz Helman and Mike Vandersluys, so the 4 of them went on court for a final demonstration match, which Elaine and Tomasz won 6-0. The scores were all very close, with most players winning close to 20 games, it was a very enjoyable day for all.
Everyone was a winner, as we all had a great time and raised £122.50 towards the court replacement fund.
Huge thanks to Tricia Smith for organising such a great fun day of tennis!
A Happy New Year to All.
P.S. Please check your reading spectacles, as someone accidentally took Tricia's and left theirs behind, and Tricia would appreciate having her own glasses back. The ones left behind are very narrow, so the owner should be able to tell the difference, and they will be returned to their rightful owner once we know who it is. 😊

We are delighted that Penzance Tennis Club has been successful in securing this year’s Skipton Building Society “Grassroots Giving” funding.
“We received hundreds of applications from community groups, clubs and organisations from across the UK and we’re really impressed with the work that you do. To make it to the shortlist stage you beat off hundreds of other applicants and were able to clearly demonstrate the positive impact you make in your local community.
It’s with grea...t delight that we’re contacting you today to let you know that your group has received enough public votes to make it into our top 165 winners. We had over 50,000 votes cast amongst the shortlisted groups and competition was really tough.
We’d like to take this time to congratulate your group and for being part of our Grassroots Giving initiative, for sharing with us the fantastic work that you do, and for being so active in supporting your local community.”
Thank you to all who voted for us and of course to Skipton Building Society for their support! @SkiptonBS_GrG
