Clement Attlee was born on this day in 1883*.
His portrait features on several Durham Miners' Association banners, including this one for Brusselton Lodge.
In 1946, he became the first Labour leader to address the Durham Miners' Gala as Prime Minister.
... In total, Clem spoke at The Big Meeting eight times between 1934 and 1955.
*(not yesterday, as we mistakenly posted 😬)

Easington Colliery Women's Support Group, Christmas 1984.
"This was in the colliery club, where we made and served a hot meal five days a week for the year of the strike," recalls Heather Wood, pictured back row, centre.
"My mam paid for and made all manner of food for our buffet. The photo was like a Christmas card to Thatcher."

The Durham Miners' Association won its first great victory within two years of its 1869 founding.
It forced the abolition of the detested yearly bond.
The bond was a system of near slavery that had operated in the county for generations.
... The local pit provided the people of our communities with their only means to live.
But to work there, a miner had to sign the bond.
The bond meant that a miner had to work at that pit for the next year, no matter how brutal the conditions.
If a miner worked elsewhere, he was imprisoned, and his family were evicted from their home.
Pictured is an example of the bond, which is on display in the Muniment Room at Redhills.
Help ensure the story of the Durham miners continues to be written. Support The Redhills Appeal here: redhillsdurham.org/thepledge/

The last shift on the Durham Coalfield was worked at Wearmouth Colliery 25 years ago today.
Number 69 is the seat for Wearmouth in The Pitman’s Parliament.
Wearmouth was the last remaining colliery on the Durham Coalfield. It is now the site of Sunderland AFC's Stadium of Light.
... Alan Cummings, Secretary of the Durham Miners' Association said:
“Today marks a quarter of a century since the end of coal mining in Durham’s collieries – but we don’t mourn, we organise.
“The success of The Redhills Appeal will ensure that the story of the Durham miners continues to be written.”
The Redhills Appeal is the DMA campaign to raise £5 million to transform its historic home into a centre of culture, heritage, and education.
