LAUNCH ALERT! 21:45HRS. Tonight our volunteers were paged by UK Coastguard to reports of a person entering the water in the vicinity of Wearmouth Bridge. The lifeboat crew conducted a thorough search of the River Wear with assistance from Sunderland Coastguard Search and Rescue Team. After the search was concluded the crew was stood down to return to station. Nothing found. Thankfully this appears to have been a false alarm with good intentions. Always call 999 and ask for the Coastguard in the event of a marine emergency. #Sunderland #RNLI #lifeboat #volunteers #charity

Launch Alert - 15:50hrs - @rnli Atlantic 85 - Launched following reports of a fishing vessel taking on water close to Wearmouth Bridge. The lifeboat crew discovered the leak was slow, but the vessel had also suffered a fouled propeller. To stabilise the vessel and allow repairs to be carried out it was towed back to Sunderland marina and moored on the half tide shelf with assistance from Coastguards from Sunderland. Once the vessel was secured, the lifeboat was released to return to station. #rnli #sunderland #riverwear

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of our station Chairman Francis (Frank) George Major, MBE,JP, DL on 9th October 2018. Frank courageously fought brain cancer for the last 2.5 years of his life with courage and the stamina that those of us who had the privilege of knowing him knew he was capable of. Frank was an inspiration to so many throughout his illustrious career in his capacity as former General Manager of the Port of Sunderland, Chairman of Sunderland R...NLI and Three Rivers LNP, Vice Chair Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, Chairman of Durham Scout County and Chair of Northumbria Regional Flood and Coastal Committee. Frank shall be missed by both the NE Business Community and his beloved wife, Pat and family. His funeral shall be held at St George’s Church, Fatfield, Washington on Wednesday 17th October at 11am. Family flowers only. Donations will be collected in lieu of flowers for both the Brain Tumour Charity and the RNLI.

Launch Alert - 12:50hrs - @rnli D class - launched following reports of a dog in difficulty in the sea 100m off Roker Pier. On arrival our volunteers carried an initial search of the area while Coastguards spoke to the first informant on the pier. As a result of that discussion it became clear the initial object reported was in fact a small seal whose head has the look of a Jack Russell dog. Once this information was confirmed, Coastguards decided to stand the lifeboat cre...w down and allow them to return to station. We are also grateful to safety boats from Sunderland Yacht Club who diverted from a club sailing event to assist with the initial search. #rnli #sunderland

When everyone else is heading home the RNLI are going out, for nothing! Other than the wish to save other people's lives. Risking their own lives on a voluntary basis. There are many great charities about, in my personal opinion the RNLI are the best. #island nation

User

I worked on the inshore rescue boat at Roker from 1972 to '73. It was a very special time. We weren't volunteers in those days. It was a well-paid job. Our boat had one Johnson 40 outboard. It was still a powerful beast.

User

I enjoyed seeing them at Sunderland international airshow where I got to try on the RNLI outfit

User
