About Sandside Cafe
Sandside Café is a family run business based in Sandsend, North Yorkshire. A beautiful place to enjoy some of the areas finest home made pies, cakes and pastries whilst you gaze upon the beautiful wildlife and unrivalled North Yorkshire coast line.
Sandside Cafe Description
So their you are, sipping a smooth cappuccino, your fork hovering over a rich home made cake, or a freshly made crab sandwich, the sun glinting off the sea. Oystercatchers patrolling the golden sands below, the North York Moors tumbling down behind and away to your right the breathtaking two mile expanse of Whitby bay all the way to the ruined cliff top abbey.
Dream on? Well, no. This is the reality of dining at the Sandside Café on NorthYorkshire's stunning heritage coast. For more than a century visitors in search of refreshment, relaxation and hospitality have sought out the café-in-a-cabin which stands at the entrance to picturesque Sandsend village, an unspoilt gem of a place with old world cottages, towering sea cliffs, a secret ruined castle, woodland and a beach cut through by streams.
Sandside was always known as the little café with the big view, sitting as it does on the very edge of the beach, just off the A174 road, one of the most beautiful coastline drives anywhere in the country.
Now the café has been entirely re-built by owners of 19 years Neil Hodgson and his sister Karen Mortimer to provide high standards of comfort, cleanliness and refreshment while retaining the rural charm of the old cabin. It was so popular that regulars begged bits before demolition. Oh, and do remember that Neil and Karen are local people, so if you need to know anything from bus times and tides, or even the route to the secret castle, just ask.
It is a firm favourite with motorists (free roadside parking), beach lovers, families, walkers, dog owners (plenty of outside seating), cyclists, artists and surfers. And most importantly, it is the place where the locals go.
The Sandside is open seven days a week during the season. Weekends and school holidays through winter.
Sandside cafe is now fully licensed on the premises. So you can enjoy our serlection of beers and wines.

Happy Easter from Sandside Cafe. We had a great start to the day with a sun rise church service here at the cafe. The service was led by parishes new vicar Malcom. After the service everyone enjoyed bacon sandwiches and coffee, it was great to see everyone #sandsidecafe #sandsend #whitby #northyorkshiremoors #cakes #coffee #easter
Hi from Sandside cafe. Over the last few weeks we have undergone a new refurbishment , which will include a new ice cream parlor. But more importantly we have decided to go 100% Biodegradable on all our takeaway packaging. This includes cups, lids, straws, bags, knifes, forks, and spoons. Its a small start but we are fully committed .

what a beautiful setting to have lunch. We had a delicious crab salad and took home cakes for later. The staff were friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend the Sandside Cafe.
The Bakewell tart is divine - better than that in Bakewell itself. Lovely staff and a perfect place to sit and admire the sea view, protected from the wind outside and snug inside when it's too chilly to sit out. We always try to get there if in the Whitby area.
Stopped here on our walk from Whitby. Such a lovely place to take in the views of the beach and coastline. A great variety of food and homemade cakes to die for and the staff we're really friendly. A great find and will definitely go back!
One of our favourite eating places, nothing is ever too much trouble for the staff who are always friendly. Stunning scenery and lovely freshly cooked food.
Lovely place. Lovely food.
Marvellous Bakewell slice ..... a huge slice! 😊
Lovely food, staff very welcoming and freindly. Dogs welcome ouside in the decking area. Great location overlookig Sandsend beach. Highly recommended.
Lovely cafe, we go everytime we go to whitby and make a special effort to drive down to sandsend just to call in for an hot chocolate and one of the gorgeous cakes! Great views regardless of time of year!
Just love this place - especially as it’s our calling point on our walk from Whitby & back
Homemade cakes and buns, can't get the past bakewell, my personal favourite! It's a meal in itself! The wife tells me all the others are fab too, she always tries something different. Coffee and cake is a must each time we visit Sandsend!
Great cafe with fabulous views over the beach. Lovely food especially the seaside special. Friendly staff and in the winter what could be nicer than being wrapped up with a hot chocolate watching the waves crashing in.
First visit here this week and can't wait to return. Friendly staff, a good cup of tea and cake to die for. Everything coming out of the kitchen looked fresh and tasty. Definitely worth a visit.
Called in yesterday and the place keeps getting better and betger in terms of its offering to customers (more improvements in its outside area since we were there in Feb). The food is always good, as are their drinks. Looking forwards to going back in winter, their corned beef pie and mushy peas is perfect after a bracing walk on the beach.
Called in Sunday in time for breakfast. Delicious bacon and egg rolls with pot of tea. Although busy the staff were polite, efficient and quick to serve us. Would highly recommend it before a walk to Whitby.
Amazing crab salad, and excellent service despite being busy.
A great full English Breakfast. Well cooked and well presented. Superb venue with stunning views!
The food we had was good will definitely go back but it was quite busy an not might room
Lovely place and was great to sit and watch the sea while drinking our latte. Only draw back was queuing for the toilet. Only having the one is a bit of a minus, hence the 4 stars.
Lovely food,we had a great fresh crab salad.Staff friendly and efficient.
As mentioned in other reviews, only downside is only having one toilet.(although there are public toilets only a minutes walk away)
Wonderful views of the beach and cliffs.
Great breakfast, speedy service despite being busy. Queue for loo tho! Lovely location, will return.
