About Silverline Memories

People with Dementia are often lonely and experience social isolation. Silverline Memories offers "places to go and things to do" to change this

Silverline Memories Description

The Alzheimer's Society Dementia Report of 2012 revealed that 67% of people with dementia do not always feel part of the community, with 61% feeling lonely some or all of the time (44% reported losing friends after diagnosis). 77% feel anxious or depressed and 75% of people do not feel the UK is geared up to deal with people with dementia. We aim to address some of those statistics by involving people living with Dementia in the community in Reminiscence Based Activities.

Services for those living with Dementia have historically been limited to whatever activities are available through any care service the person has been able to access. Services have focused on physical care and safety and not on stimulating activities. It is however very possible to live well with Dementia and although the person with Dementia may not remember the details of activities after, during Reminiscence Therapy they can be taken back to a time where they best remember which enables them to recall happy times. These emotions will be remembered even when the activity itself has been forgotten.

Wondering what to do with all your leftover mince pies and cheese & crackers? Bring a plate to share to St. Aidan’s Church Community Room (Brunton Park, Gosforth) from 1pm today and enjoy the company of friends. Our annual leftover lunch is one of our most relaxed & informal events of the year, so come and enjoy a few hours of calm! All welcome.

The Memory Bus is off to Gosforth Academy today. Every year we are invited to bring a group to the school for an afternoon of music and entertainment, followed by a three course Christmas dinner - all prepared for by the pupils. It's a lovely festive afternoon and it's very special to feel part of the community for all our group members. Photos to follow.

The planning and work that goes into each Tea Dance, never mind the Silverline Memories Variety Show is incredible. All for a good cause. Local people serving the local community, and providing a drop in twice a week, with a view to expand, and start a coffee morning in Gateshead near Springwell Community allotment. Make contact for information on what we do.

The Silverline Memories team are an amazing group of volunteers who are supportive, caring and compassionate. They light up the lives of those with dementia, and raise the spirits of those caring for loved ones. Our lives are enriched to be part of their 'family'. God Bless you all.

Sandra and her team have created something very special at Silverline Memories. I spent a great afternoon providing holistic pamper treatments to the lovely people at the Dementia Cafe. Everyone who comes through the door is made to feel very welcome, and it was lovely to see everyone in this friendly and supportive group relax and enjoy themselves. I can't wait to go back!

My mum and I visited the dementia cafe in St Aidens for the first time last week, we were made to feel most welcome by both the organisers and other visitors. Thank you and see you after the bank holiday Jan x
