Santa is sold out for Saturday 22 December with only one spot left on Saturday 15 December. There are only the odd few left for the other dates so if you'd been thinking about booking up then don't delay!

Who remembers having turnips at Halloween? With a scabby string and a candle that would scorch the roof of the lantern creating that burnt turnip smell we can still remember even now! This is from a kid's Halloween party at the Gambling Man Gallery on Wapping Street, South Shields in the 1980s.

Bede of Jarrow U3A (University of the Third Age) have just installed their display on the 1st floor showcasing their project about the river Tyne called ‘The Tyne of Our Lives!’ U3A UK
This is what they said….'The theme of the River Tyne appealed to a lot of us as we can focus on a lot of different things – artwork, poetry, history, songs and information about the river.’
Bede U3A and a Bit of the Tyne... By B Walker
The River Tyne is a lovely place our U3A will know it well Here’s some of the things about them both but there’s lots more to tell
Now Geordies sound funny ‘n say wards y’ divn’t knar But we’re aalways there t’help yuh Whether y’ live aside us or very far!
Our U3A’s the greatest there’s a queue to be a member There’s always something going on from January – December
Our very clever artists amaze us with their pictures And once a month we listen to some very useful lectures!
We have a coffee morning and find out our club news Then…Oh the joy! Our auction it’s sure to chase away your blues
We puzzle over our brilliant quiz and wish that we were clever And with pilates and the bowls pray we’ll stay fit forever
We get poshed up and out we go for an evening meal or lunch Or outdoors to walk along our Tyne makes us such a happy bunch
There’s our croquet and the scrabble plenty things to try And bus trips and our garden club your time will simply fly!
T is for Tomorrow The future’s looking bright Y is for our Yesterdays Our coal and steel was right N is for the Here and Now A river clean and free E is just for Ever That’s us and our big T
See more

This is such a lovely museum. I absolutely love "Creature Corner" and those lovely big spiders, snakes and Gizmo the lizard! I'm lucky that this museum is walking distance for me so I can go any time I wish. I also enjoy looking at the history of South Shields. Feels so realistic by just looking x

This is a lovely free museum and has something for everyone including reptiles for the children. The King Coal exhibition was very well compiled and had a lot of interesting information and some very close to my own family experience's. There is also a lovely tea room for when you're ready for a cupp

User

The latest exhibition, King Coal is the best I've seen at the Museum, so much fascinating detail, needs more than one visit to take it all in. I love browsing the other exhibits too, I was particularly thrilled to see a Crazy patchwork tea cosy on my first visit too!

The Little Lions playgroup for ages 0-5 every Tuesday (13.30-14.30) is excellent and my little girl loves going every week and it's also a great introduction to the museum for her at such an early age. 5 stars to the group, 5 stars to Leslie who runs the group and makes each week different, informative and fun for the children and 5 stars to the museum
