If the weather is fine, it is good to walk in Whitby. Here's a suggestion for those who like to walk, but are not keen on the uphill bits! Whitby to Sandsend - but check the tide is low before starting out.
From the apartment, walk along Skinner St towards West Cliff. Either walk along the footpath on top of the cliff, or walk down to the Pavillion and walk along the promenade. At the end of the footpath/promenade you arrive at Sandsend beach. At low tide you can walk along t...he beach to Sandsend. It takes just over an hour at a leisurely pace.
As a reward, treat yourself to coffee and a snack at the beachside café - my favourite is a crab sandwich. (Only a few steps up from beach. If you still have energy, you could walk further along to the end of the village. (another café there).
Make the return journey by bus, and get off at the stop by the garage just before the roundabout at the top of Pannett Park. Walk back to the apartment along the back of St Hildas Terrace.
The stairs up to the apartment is the only uphill bit!

Whitby is quieter now. Had a lovely visit with grandchildren before the school holidays finished. We were spoilt for choice - digging in sand, splashing in the sea, and rock pooling were popular. Mini golf, Pannett park (play area and excellent tea room), the 'goth' morris dancers, and fish and chips came a close second. Further afield, we visited Danby Moors centre ( excellent woodland walk, play areas and coffee shop), Falling Foss for a wood land walk ( and tea room), Goathland by train ( Owls and coffee shop), and a walk on Fylingdale moor. The children became quite connoisseurs of Yorkshire cakes! Didn't have time for everything, we'll have to go again!

An interesting day trip from Whitby is Bempton Cliff RSPB reserve. It is in the coast and at the top of the cliffs, so no strenuous uphill walking. The main attraction in summer is the hundreds of sea birds nesting in the cliff face - gannets, guillemots, razorbills, puffin, fulmar and kittiwake. There are viewing points to admire the birds. There is also a cliff top pathway, so you can wander along through grassy meadows, listening to skylarks singing. Most importantly, there is an excellent visitors centre with video displays, information, and things to buy, eat and drink.

Whitby harbour was bustling with activity at the weekend. Boat rides, fishing trips, crabbing from the quay edge -take your pick - or just admire the boats and water!

The apartment is ideal for steam train fans. You can see the trains come into and go from Whitby station through the living room window. We took a 3 hour ride from Pickering to Grosmont and back - having a delicious coffee, cake and sherry experience in a 1930s first class carriage, with observation room at the end. The Penny Hedge is an ancient tradition in Whitby, still going today…
The legend dates back to 1159, when the Abbot of Whitby imposed a penance on three hunters, and on their descendants for all time, for murdering a hermit. Each year, on the eve of Ascension Day, on the east bank of the River Esk in Whitby, they construct a short hedge from stakes woven together, able to withstand three tides. The instructions stipulated that a knife "of a penny price" was to used. The cere...mony is still performed in Whitby every year. A horn is sounded and followed by the cry "Out on ye! Out on ye! Out on ye!" or "Out on ye - for the heinous crime on ye".

It's been as busy as a summer's day in Whitby, except the crowds are all wearing woolly hats rather than sunhats. Penny arcades and icecreams as popular as ever, as well as the obligatory stroll along the pier. Come and see for yourselves and stay at St Hilda's Holiday Apartment. Online availability and bookings now being taken for 2018.

I love Whitby at this time of year. The crowds have gone, the days are chillier but sunny and the sea lively. Saw turnstones tamely scurrying on the pier wall, and purple sandpipers sheltering from the waves on ledges along the pier wall - then a bright flash of blue - a kingfisher! Come and see for youself, check out www.sthildasapartmentwhitby.co.uk
