About Star Inn The Harbour

The latest offering from Whitby Lad Andrew Pern, who runs the Michelin-starred Star Inn at Harome and York’s Star Inn The City restaurant.

Star Inn The Harbour Description

Andrew Pern, whose name is synonymous with his Michelin-starred pub, The Star Inn at Harome, has long wished to open a restaurant in his hometown and to celebrate the ingredients he grew up surrounded by and with which he began to learn to cook, even before he decided to train as a Chef at the former Scarborough Catering College.

The Star Inn The Harbour's Menus feature Catch-of-the-Day fish and meat specials and also world famous North Yorkshire Moors produce, such as furred and feathered game, as well as a seasonal All Day Menu. Desserts will come predominantly from the restaurant’s Ice Cream Parlour, including some childhood classics, brought up to date.

The perfect year round Celebration Destination for family birthdays, anniversaries and ‘well done! ’s, The Star Inn The Harbour is also ideal for catch-ups with friends and business meetings – or, simply, a re-fuelling traditional fish and chip lunch, after a bracing seaside walk.

Situated on the harbourside close to a number of car parks and straight across the road from the train station with links to Middlesborough (via Glaisdale, Danby and Great Ayton et al) on the Esk Valley Railway and Whitby via the North Yorkshire Moors Railway it's also a great meeting up place.

Yesterday (Friday 15th June) marked the date of our first year anniversary - we are officially 1 year old this weekend!
On this very same day our illustrious leader Andrew Pern (he doesn't do Facebook!) received a message from The AA informing him that we were subject to a surprise inspection by them this week... and that we had indeed been awarded One AA Rosette for our efforts! We think this will sit beautifully next to our Michelin 'Plate', both of which represent great... ingredients cooked well; this is clearly aligned with our mission statement of being led by fantastic seasonal ingredients.
We're super proud of our whole team for this achievement but particular mentions go out to The Star Inn At Harome alumni Matthew Leivers & Ryan Osborne, our Head Chefs, who work tirelessly to maintain consistency and quality in our food. Well done lads!!!
A huge well done to our fantastic General Manager Stelian Cristea - another Star Inn old boy! Stelian looks after all the front of house (and more!) here at The Star Inn The Harbour and is an absolute superstar!
Whilst we see such an award as recognition and achievement both on a local and national scale, we aren't forgetting our roots here in beautiful Whitby. We love our Whitby locals and over our first year have seen many guests returning to eat with us and that means the world to us. You can always pop in for a drink or an ice cream if you're passing!

As chefs, Good Friday is a day we'd always associate with seafood and fish particularly. We set our opening date as Good Friday 2017 and ended up opening 10 weeks later than originally planned. (So we see today as our unofficial birthday!)
This week marks the start of the season here in Whitby and we've been overwhelmed with great local support during our time here so far. We're so proud of our fabulous General Manager Stelian, Head Chefs Matthew & Ryan and of course their f...antastic teams too!
We're thankful to all those who've been to our restaurant and given us a try, we're looking forward to welcoming you back and hopefully the sun too!?
Whilst we have hosted some high profile guest chef dinners, we do offer a host of varied options which are of course seafood led - starting with fish 'n'chips, prawn cocktails and the classics to Lindisfarne oysters, seafood platters and local lobsters for those wanting to 'push the boat out!'

Team shot to finish off the evening! An absolutely brilliant night here with Kenny and Jake from House of Tides, Quayside, Newcastle!

The grand finale - chocolate, salted caramel & hazelnut. Enough said! A huge thank you to Kenny and his team from House of Tides, Quayside, Newcastle for making his way over the moors to little old Whitby for what has been a fantastic evening! x

We made a trip from Northumberland to Whitby for an overnight stay to be able to dine here having loved our visits to The Star in the City and The Star at Harome. We loved the decor, enjoyed the Whitby gin and Fever Tree tonic (although the bar man admitted he didn't know which tonic was best as he didn't like gin- needs to brush up on this!). Lovely service throughout and the meal was very much up to expectations. King Scallops with salsa Verde and Caponata so delicious and the hake with spicy bombay potatoes, mussels and crispy cauliflower one of the best fish dishes I have had for a while. The food is competitively priced (if you want good food of this standard we would expect to pay for it) but the wine is pricey and it would be good to have a more reasonable priced option on offer. Will definitely return and can recommend.

User

The food was delicious, I had Lobster and Sea scallop thermidor while my husband had Grilled red mullet from the specials menu. Desserts were also delicious. Everything about our visit was superb, from the service to value for money. We will definitely go back.

User

The best proper Sunday lunch I’ve had in a long time. Perfectly cooked pink beef, amazing Yorkshire pudding, stunning gravy. Excellent. Oooh, and the Cremant wine is divine. Can’t wait to go back

User

Lovely ambiance, fantastic staff and absolutely amazing food. Not sure what to recommend as the menu changes frequently but had the most delicious roast beef sunday lunch. Their ginger parkin is a bit special too.

User

I can honestly say the food, service and atmosphere was amazing. The food was just so well cooked and tasted delicious . The staff were so lovely with my very difficult 8 year old son . I would recommend this restaurant to anyone and we will look forward to a return trip next time we are in Whitby .

User

From opening the door and entering until leaving the whole dining experience was perfect!

We turned up at 7.15pm without a booking and were greeted warmly and welcomed to a nice large booth table. The decor is very stylish, modern and trendy.

For starters we ordered the curried crab (totally amazing), calamari, child’s bucket of mussels and lindisfarne oysters - all perfectly cooked and tasted so fresh.

Mains we ordered: surf & snout (my personal favourite), smoked chicken breast, birth sea lobster and a child’s cod & chips. Again the food was well presented, full of flavour and very fresh.

The waiter we had was exceptional, every restaurant owners ideal server to be honest (think he was called Karl). He treat our 7 year old daughter with respect and never made us feel as though we shouldn’t have brought her along.

All in all we had a fantastic time and will definitely be back!

User

For such an obvious tourist trap to offer food at the excellent level I received. Congratulations. Oysters as a starter and Hake Special as the main. Cooking of the top order and ingredients as good. Dined three times in two days. Highly recommend to foodies, cafe people., ice cream lovers and the oysters were some of the best I have had. Thanks for reassuring me that there are still excellent and consistent places to eat [ex chef of 20 years so kind of picky!!]

User

Fantastic food and polite staff who seated us in a lovely spot by the dock front. Food was hot and served fast. First time here and wont be the last !

User

Fabulous food and staff especially Emily & fern the waitresses. Their customer service and knowledge is superb we will be back without a doubt and thank you for a lovely evening

User

Exceptional menu , great selection of locally sourced dishes. The seared tuna was divine and my partner could not fault the fish pie. Service was just right, attentive at the same time as relaxed and friendly. In terms of value for money , it would take something to beat this place. All made for a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Thank you to the team.

User

Excellent service, lovely atmosphere, amazing food on par with top restaurants I've eaten in in London, great value too. Thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely recommend, this was on my holiday to do list and so glad we went.

User

Absolutely fantastic meal and staff! Everything was superb - I had the whole garlic butter lobster, which was cooked perfectly, couldn’t recommend it any higher! Will definitely be coming back next time we visit Whitby!

User

A thoroughly enjoyable evening with my boyfriend for my birthday meal. The food was delicious, the staff were helpful and friendly and the service was excellent. Thank you

User

We probably had the worst table in the house although booked two days ahead

It’s never good to sit in the kitchen doorway, literally

A wee bit of chair moving is required to make the corner table 2/3 only

Anyway the grub was great there are a couple of points to raise

The squid ink “sauce” was really tasteless try some garlic in it which would go well with the calamari

£8 for a glass of wine! , we stuck with beer!

In summary it’s a bit overpriced to the extent once was enough

Good food well cooked but expensive for the sake of it

User

The waiting staff were fine unfortunately the wait for the food was a little long im assuming there must of been a mix up in the kitchen as the waiter came over and apologised as my order of the surf and turf was 10mins behind my partner's meal the meal was ok but a little bit over priced for what you receive.we shared the calamari starter my partner had the haddock and chips and myself as I mentioned the surf and turf we had a bottle of wine to accompany our meal I found it a little steep when I received the bill for £85.00 I did still leave a tip but I've had better for that type of price considering after all it was just fish and chips. Ps similar meal today at the magpie £47.00

User

The food & service was eventually excellent- this was a pre booked birthday treat for myself from my partner & confirmed by email from themselves again the day before the booking. It was arranged well in advance as it was the Saturday of Goth Weekend. Unfortunately we didn’t get off to a good start, as our first impressions on arrival were not good. We were told our booking did not exist & there was a problem! It took an embarrassing wait & 3 people to rectify this & we had to show the booking proof 3 times to each person - as I pointed out, I don’t think it was necessary to even let us know there was a problem - this really put a downer on our 1st visit that we had been so looking forward to. Once seated the service, food & venue were admittedly top notch, but it was only on paying at the end we we got an apology & were told we didn’t have to pay for the bottle of wine we had with our meal. It would have helped to have been told this earlier on, as I appreciated the gesture but it would have altered the way I felt throughout the experience - which was not 10/10 during the meal because the whole experience was marred by the way we were made to feel on arrival- the 1st rule of customer service is if there is a problem the client doesn’t have to know about - then don’t tell them! 80% of customer satisfaction is not the meal, haircut or goods - it’s how you are made to feel. We are regular visitors to Whitby & hope that they sort out their inefficient booking system as it unnecessarily let down what was supposed to be a happy celebration for us. Having read some of the other reviews below & only seen ‘likes’ from the venue - it would be nice to see some acknowledgement to these posts.

Me and the hubby absolutely love Andrew Pernes star inn in harrome. We was lucky enough to get married there and have Andrew do our wedding food, so we have followed on our anniversary tradition previous the star in the city and now this weekend for an early anniversary getaway.

But we was left feeling a little disappointed it certainly has Andy's stamp on it, and is a lovely edition to the Star restaurants but the food was just ok.

Didn't even stay for pudding and I normally cannot resist the parkin at any Star restaurants.

but I will say this I am in love with the octopus handle on the entrance door if I could know where you got this many thanks haha.

looking forward to our return to harrome next year.

User

It looks so lovely inside but wasn't at all impressed with the food and service unfortunately. We had the cod and it was very wet making the batter just mush on the plate and the chips were too hard. Altogether totally tasteless..... The wine we had was the saving grace but very expensive meal for what we had. We weren't asked if our food was ok and had to prompt the waiter a couple of times for a glass of wine. Shame as such a lovely restaurant which looks quite new. Won't be back....

User

Came initially for ice cream, but there were only tables of two in the parlour, there were 5 of us. Perhaps they don't want to attract families to the ice cream parlour? Reluctantly we were offered a table in the restaurant. Firstly there was no vanilla or chocolate ice cream, surly a staple? £13 for 2 pints of lager and a lime and soda! The staff were rude, when asked what lager was available he couldn't be bothered to speak and just pointed. When ordering ice cream and soft drinks we were told they couldn't be ordered together. The irony that she had to walk to the bar to get the card machine, then when ordering drinks the barman had to walk to the ice cream counter to get the machine back, it was laughable! The team were far from welcoming or accommodating, such a shame as it looked so lovely, but we've been put off returning due to the unwelcoming and frankly rude staff, not a smile among them!
